This video is why people are obsessed with this channel. The way that you use bags as a vehicle to explore the essence of design, self reflection, and how our role as people who buy shit impacts the planet is inspiring. How the things we buy and how we use them is a reflection of our values and how we can see them as clues to what is happening in our subconscious lives. I always thought of packing and bags as...well...packing and bags. But, man, after watching your videos as I pack 4 pairs of chonies for a 3 day trip, one of many many work trips I take each year, I pause and think "Woah...who am I? What subtle subconscious fear am I trying to guard against by overpacking underwear for a short trip. How else in my life do I operate based on unrealized fears of the unknown." I already found great bags that will last me years because of this channel but I keep watching, and I am just now realizing why...at the end of the day I dont really care about the bags themselves....but I keep watching for the little gems of insight. Thanks for your perspective brother and keep up the good work!
To question #3: I'm a 5'1" female and went with the Opposethis Invisible Carry-On and it was perfect for me. Expandable to 35L, sleek and minimal, if that's your thing. My preferred look is urban/ minimal vs. outdoorsy or what will make me look like an obvious tourist. It also fits fully expanded under the plane seat and carries comfortably. Good luck in your search!
Totally agree with the Tortuga Setout Divide. I'm a staggering 5'1 and it took me a while to find a pack for one bag travel to fit my torso. Ironically the Osprey women's bags made me look more like a turtle than the Tortuga pack. Previously had the REI wmns Co-op Trail 40 but wanted a clam shell bag with exterior water bottle sleeve. Also super excited that Tortuga is coming out with a Setout designed specifically for women later on this year (summer 2019). Gonna give the hubby my old pack so I can get a new one! =)
I don't know how I missed this video earlier, but an instant favorite for me. As a "creator" (photographer and web developer), I love the way you talk about how product design is a product of human creation and how the resulting product can be an enabler for other human beings to achieve whatever they want. At a glance, your talks can feel like "enablers" to bag addicts looking for approval to get the next cool bag in town, but there's an underlying message there. As you said, you may just already own the bag that fits your need, except you just need to appreciate it for what it is. FWIW, bag addict, dad of three and use a Synapse 25 as my primary backpack / EDC / "one-bag travel" (aside from all the kid stuff - who am I kidding!). 😎
For a female/small frame and a longer trip I recommend the REI Co-Op Ruckpack 40 Women's size. I think it works for outdoor adventures AND urban travel, the black looks fairly sleek for a big bag. Very adjustable with load lifters and a nice waist belt. I'm 5'4" with small shoulders but it adjusts perfectly. It's sporty but it also has a laptop compartment, water bottle pocket, etc. You can try it on at an REI store, they'll fill it up for you to get a sense of how it'll feel. They also have a great return policy! I tried the Aer travel 2 and it was huuuuge on me. The Topo Designs travel bag 30 works on a smaller frame too, but carries less. :)
in not really a goruck guy but they have a GR2 that is 26L, only 18" tall. when she said "fiddlie pockets" just made me think about that. love your videos, love the new living arrangement. we all need to share more.
Nearly fell off my couch when you read out my question; thanks for answering man! Really appreciate it! Started drafting up some lists and I gotta say it does make it easier. Not a big plan it out type of dude but that usually means that I just throw a bunch of shit in a bag. Need to start working on that minimal life. Also, ended up grabbing the Peak Travel with the tech pouch and goddamn they're nice. Keep up the great work! Now where did I leave my business papers...
Regarding the first question about what to pack for a trip: One of my favorite parts of travel is living with nothing more than what I actually need. It's an amazing experience that I'd recommend to everyone as an exercise to reflect on what's really important to you when you're NOT traveling. My last two international trips I was gone for 3 weeks at a time and brought nothing but my Evergoods CPL 24 with me and had room to spare. Try it out. Be light and nimble. Make new friends in Tokyo and change your plans last minute to jump on a train to hang out in Kyoto. It'll change your life.
Great unusual video. I just bought a Millican bag (Smith The Roll Pack). Very similar to your Bellroy Shift. Love the looks and the simplicity of the design (maybe too simple). It goes well with all my little pouches and business papers.
Personally, I would love to see one episode covering the history of the bags, evolving from old aluminum external framed climbing backpacks that my father gave me for mountaineering with him, through the evolution to Nike Epic Backpacks over to Wandrd and Peak Design super futuristic packs.
I just bought a new bag (using your links! ayyy!) and I'll be traveling in Europe for a month with it. So to get accustomed to it, I carry it everywhere, even around the house with me. You're so right that you need to carry the way the bag asks you to. All things have energy, and the more handmade something is, the more love it has, the more energy it's got. The more you interact with it, the more energy you put in that thing. Does this make sense? anyways... good life lessons as always chase :)
I’d absolutely love it if you could make a vid comparing the standard issue brown buffalo backpack and the north face surge backpack! I’ve been trying to decide between these two bags for months and still can’t decide help! Love the vids really fuel my secret love for bags
I really appreciate your take on reviewing bags and your enthusiasm. I didn't notice until you mentioned your beard but, you definitely look like Bobcat Goldthwait.
No perfect bag @ 17:10?...you said it once years ago and I've agreed since the day I got It in the mail...The Topo Designs Mountain Briefcase might be The Perfect Bag! Backpack, Messenger, Briefcase...and that zipper!!!
Hey Chase, could you do a review/ comparison on convertible backpacks for work and commuting? Like messenger and backpack in one? I‘ve been trying to find a suitable bag, but can‘t find one that is practicle AND looks decent. Would be great! Love your videos - although they r turning me into a bag geek. Cheers, Desi
I'm 4'11 (soooo close) and I'm looking forward to my peak design 30L for one bag travel (bought black, used). I have an ebags bag that fits and works but I DESPISE the aesthetic. I need to LOVE the design of what I'm using, and it has to be multifunctional (peak designs tote, greatest bag EVER, just sayin').
I think you should look into the Atlas Athlete Pack if you haven’t already. And if you can, do a review on it. I just purchased it and it might just be the one camera/travel pack that beats them all. Thanks for all the great videos!
7:20 - Your roadtrip might be over by the time they actually get a new one shipped out to you. Have you heard about their production/delivery issues? Was about to buy one and held off because it seems like they're having the same problems that plagued the Prima launch. They should hang with the Peak Design guys and pick up a few tips. Shame though, both Prima and Errant look like great bags.
That's a great shirt-jack (jac-shirt?) Different vendors have different names for them but I have this one too. It's thicker/heavier than a normal flannel shirt, but lighter than a jacket. A bit thin on the fit but super comfortable and warm. The best part? Hand pockets on the sides w/ a soft lining inside and a couple of interior pockets for your... I don't know.. .maybe your papers? your business papers? For winter time spent down here in SoCal, it's more than enough. Might need a few more layers up north in Oregon/Washington this time of year though.
Came across an interesting bag the other day - Lowepro FreeLine BP 350 AW. Basically it's a Lowepro version of the PD Everyday Backpack. Oh and I passed your name along to guys at Barber Shop (in the hopes they send you some of their fine bags) =) Keep up the great work!
If she's open to it, it might be cool to see your wife try on and comment on the fit of different bags. The smaller frame issue matters, but I think a lot of the men making these bags aren't factoring in the different chest and shoulder shape that women's bodies have as well which impacts the way straps feel. I would definitely watch a video that gives me a visual idea of how bags look and feel on a woman. Obviously if she isn't into being in videos then that's her decision. But an idea none the less.
I don't think it's the type of stuff you usually review, but are you planning or would you review the wool and oak voyager set? I'm planning on getting it, but there's a lot of mixed feelings about it out there, and after watching like a billion hours of your reviews, i kinda trust you now haha.
Did you or are you doing a comparison between the old shift and that newer x mapp shift you were using in this video? I’ve been eyeing that shift for a while then the new one came out recently.
Hey Chase. What do you recommend for daily carry for those of us with thick windows laptops? I have a 15.6in and it's almost bursting the zips on the errant pack. h e l p. :)
Hey man, sweet vid, it made me think of a question for you. Do you have any good bags that fit the new ryanair one bag travel standard? The little under the seat 40x20x25 cm ones? I’ve been looking around to get one because my current backpacks are too long for that and you know that when ryanair gets stingy so do all other european airlines, better gear up
That is the size of a small shoulder bag. Too small for even a small camera bag. Use a better airline and hope that a lot of other people will do the same. (But most people are stupid.)
Hey...comment for Mary...cotopaxi35 is a great bag, cool colors, nice organization. I have one black/blue and love it. I use my TB25 all the time as well, but hard to decide over the many bags I have. Just my thoughts.
Get on the email list at Bagworks.co or *I can't help U*!

Holy shit yes.
Will Allen you nailed it!
lol Chase as the Oracle, "You've already chosen the bag, I'm just here to help you understand why."

Dude I could listen to you go on for hours! Keep the awesome videos coming. Cant wait to pick up a PD Travel or 30L Everyday

Now where did I leave my business papers...
Pack for activities, that's genius! Thanks, I had not thought of it that way before; it makes so much sense to me.

My first cross country trip from fl to OR in August and I bought an osprey Porter 30l. Wish I got the 46 but eh, I'll roll with it.

The main thing you want is room for all your business papers.

Do you have any thoughts on the Cotopaxi Allpa?? Or are u planing on doing a video of it? (Also a good bag for smaller female frames)

Nice! You are in my town! Hope you are enjoying your time here. Love that OB pause!
I watched all 3 minutes of blank hipster jesus 😂 loved every second of it
Great Q&A. I think that 4-bag comparison question has been floating around for a while, really great answer. As were the rest,.
I'm 4'11 (soooo close) and I'm looking forward to my peak design 30L for one bag travel (bought black, used). I have an ebags bag that fits and works but I DESPISE the aesthetic.

Could you make a video on what "tech" stuff you have & how you pack it?
This is DESIGN
I need that on a t-shirt, bumper sticker, or something something

Which would you choose, peak design or Nomatic travel bag?
Love your videos, would really love to see that eBags review if you end up doing it. Have a good weekend Chase!
Have you ever considered reviewing roller laptop bags?
Dude, where did you get this so cool green shirt? I am looking similar one long time ago... :) Thx

Have you ever used any of the Kathmandu bags? Like the Litehaul or Shuttle Cargo? I like your bag reviews, but didnt see one on Kathmandu packs
Love my boundary errant pack. Dope ass bag with tons of flexibility with the accessories
Unrelated but what phone case is that? Looks sick.
Review some specialty cases, such as Nock.co pen cases! Would be awesome. Love the channel!

Your best video yet! Love your ramblings!
Chase Wandrd Veer is out on Kickstarter 🤙 will you review it?🙌 The first bag than look like a bag👈
The errant is out of stock rn in us. Some ks backers still don't have their bag... I got mine tho #blessed
What kinds of shirt do you have on in the video?

Dope Video! Sending blessing your way, Keep inspiring!🎒🙌🏻
Goruck also makes bags with curved straps for women that could be good for multi week travel.
Please, make a mideo "How to get expensive and overpriced carry-on backpacks if you're a student" :D
Hey man, sweet vid, it made me think of a question for you.
Do you have any good bags that fit the new ryanair one bag travel standard? The little under the seat 40x20x25 cm ones?

How often do you send emails? I’m on the list but only received one in the last year? Haha
I almost never do right now :) BUT! The future...
Hey Chase, great videos, when are you going to do more clothing, such as tops for either sex and more travel sling bags?
Very interesting video! Thumbs up👍
Great stuff
