- Lento e largo-Tranquillissimo
(only the second part of the 3st movement)
The tempo of the third movement is not as slow as the previous two, and subtle changes in dynamism and mode make it more complex and involving than it may at first appear. It comprises three verses in A minor[1] and, like the first movement, is constructed from evolving variations on a simple motif. The melody is established in the opening verse, and the second and third verses revisit the cradling motifs of the second movement. As in the second movement, the motifs are built up from inversions of plain triads and seventh chords stretching across several octaves. As the soprano sings the final words, the key changes to a pure diatonic A major which accompanies, in writer David Ellis's words, the "ecstatic final stanza":[1]
O sing for him / God's little song-birds / Since his mother cannot find him. And you, God's little flowers / May you blossom all around / that my son may a sleep happy sleep.[16]
I heard this performed by the Epsicopal/Anglican choir of St. James in the City (Los Angeles) as part of their Evensong service on Sunday May 8th, 2011. It was sublime in a perfect setting...the entire congregation sat in frozen silence as this piece played out. It was so beautiful with an ending sung at this tempo..an ending that did not want to end. Gorecki IMHO is a genius in his deliberate use of silence and nuance creating enormous atmospheres that sweep up the listener/choir/cities.
This is my favorite symphony. It has so much emotion and power. I would like to hear it live someday.
Po prostu brakuje slow by opisac ogromy smutek i zarazem niebywale piekno tej symfonii. Glos Zofii Kilanowicz unosi wprost w przestworza swoja delikatnoscia i cierpieniem. To kazanie za kadym razem mnie gleboko wzrusza. Gdybym tylko ja byla w stanie oddac spiewem te smutne slowa, nie chcailabym juz nic wiecej od zycia.
Very touching.
Thanks for sharing.
if this does not make you cry, you have no heart...
Uwielbiam te symfonię.
R.I.P. Henryk Górecki - His 4th Symphony was due to be played for the first time in London this year. Sadly his ill health prevented this.
Translated lyrics, second part:
Perhaps the poor child/Lies in a rough ditch/and instead he could have been/lying in his warm bed
Oh, sing for him/God's little song-birds/Since his mother/Cannot find him
And you, God's little flowers/May you blossom all around/So that my son/May sleep happily
Translated lyrics:
Where has he gone/My dearest son?/Perhaps during the uprising/The cruel enemy killed him
Ah, you bad people/In the name of God, the most Holy/Tell me, why did you kill
My son?
Never again/Will I have his support/Even if I cry/My old eyes out/Were my bitter tears
to create another River Oder/They would not restore to life/My son
He lies in his grave/and I know not where/Though I keep asking people/Everywhere
I too prefer the nonesuch recording, however any recording of the track is stunning. The
3rd symphony in it's entirety is one of the most moving forms of art i've ever encountered.
Beautiful.
yes its my one of the best claasic song ever i always craing when i hear this
@pieternooten it gives me the chills, that's for sure.
A very nice alternative to Dawn Upshaw's famous version. Thanks for posting this.
Yes, this technique is called Minimalism. Gorecki's style was known as "holy minimalism". You can look it up in wikipedia.
RIP Henryk
Also Harley and Joker scene was so beautiful with this in the background
@keleheris
A Polish soprano singer called Zofia Kilanowicz; recorded in 1993
[4/11/13 12:37:11 AM] AP: you know when crazy people shake their bodies back and forwards
[4/11/13 12:37:21 AM] AP: you can feel their pain and relief
[4/11/13 12:37:29 AM] AP: I always wondered why they do it
[4/11/13 12:37:34 AM] AP: or why ot helps
[4/11/13 12:37:44 AM] AP: this song is the same for the mind
(taken from real conversation on a description of it)
The Crown brought me here.
Yep. Tony and the Asian girl.
I cant understand anything she's saying but she sounds beautiful
Where has he gone
My dearest son?
Perhaps during the uprising
The cruel enemy killed him
Ah, you bad people
In the name of God, the most Holy,
Tell me, why did you kill
My son?
Never again
Will I have his support
Even if I cry
My old eyes out
Were my bitter tears
to create another River Oder
They would not restore to life
My son
He lies in his grave
and I know not where
Though I keep asking people
Everywhere
Perhaps the poor child
Lies in a rough ditch
and instead he could have been
lying in his warm bed
Oh, sing for him
God's little song-birds
Since his mother
Cannot find him
And you, God's little flowers
May you blossom all around
So that my son
May sleep happily
I totally agree man
Ní chluinim fuiaim lachan ná gé ann,
ná fiolar ag éamh sois cuain,
ná fiú na mbeacha chun saothair
thabharfadh mil agus céir don tslua.
Níl ceol binn milis na n-éan ann
le hamharc an lae a dhul uainn,
náan chuaichín i mbarra na ngéag ann,
ós í chuirfeadh an saol chun suain.
@ABOCHITO Dawn Upshaw - David Zimmer - London Sinfonietta - Symphony No. 3 - 1992
Why can you not just enjoy the music without having to denegrate other peoples taste?
It is perfectly legitimate to love this music (as you clearly do) without having to make unecessary comparisons with other music.
There is no universal hierarchy in music, we all have personal preferences and we have no right to challenge others tastes!
yes but the best version is zofia kilianowicz sopran and antoni witt in katowice symphony! nexos
th best versionis zofia kilanowicz sopran!!!!!!!!!!!!
yes it's the movement people do when in agony - also the wailing movement Jews make at Wailing Wall. And absolutely, this music does the same .
Yes, 3st...you know..like Thirst.

@oberones Maith an fhear !
LOL!
the best version is zofia kilianowicz sopran
haha ^^
@bsod4u2 I beg to differ, noise is something much more distinguished than 'popular culture', I would be pleased if such a distinction were made between discordant sounds and auditory trash as I happen to enjoy the former and despise the latter alongside you.
