      LOL, that's clever! Truth is, driving 25-45mph on a bendy road would be a decent test but the guy in this vid did nothing like it. Drove on fresh powder snow on what looked like a STRAIGHT long country driveway or road.

      Any problems with the transmission? Apparently with those awd vehicles, you have to change all 4 tires at once if you get a flat and if you don’t it supposedly wrecks the transmission

    I have the 2018 Highlander limited with Michelin Defender LTX M/S tires and just drove thru the blizzard of Jan 29 2022 and did not get stuck or slide while driving on partially plowed roads and highways. Drove below 30mph on the highway and slowly on regular roads. Felt secure on the road

    Thanks, Rob! Just what I needed to see. I had an '08 Highlander, bought 2 Subie Outbacks in succession after that, and missed the bigger, quieter, more powerful Toyota Highlander. I considered going back to one, but wasn't sure it was up to the snow handling capabilities of the Subies, which are awesome. After watching your analysis, I have felt better about coming back to Toyota. 4Runners and such might have 4x4, but they drive like tanks once you lock them into that mode. AWD is so much better: I'm not a forest ranger; I drive on highways and interstates. But I still need to get up the long, uphill driveway on my central PA farm. It's the hardest part of a snowy day, believe me. And the Highlander is up to the job. Then when I get on the highway, I want a smooth, quiet ride with the power of a V6. I'm an Apple fan since the 90's, but I don't miss Apple Play. I drive. I listen to music. I navigate. It's enough. Keep your eyes on the road and pay attention.

      Corn Puff glad I could help and the Highlander gives you a lot for the money. Leather, 7 seats, Nav, AWD, V6, all the safety features, you name it. I liked it a lot.

    • @MemphisMojo15s
      @MemphisMojo15s 6 лет назад

      Corn Puff If it snows and gets below 45° often where you live, and Subaru or another AWD is a necessity, why not use snow tires? They're unbeatable in cold weather and in the snow. Overall, it isn't the vehicle that determines your safety in inclimate weather, it starts with the driver and then the tires :-)
      Shoot, check out some of my videos. All I've used the last 3 seasons have been snow tires.
      In the past, that's all I ever used, especially on just the FWD and 2WD vehicles, and sometimes chains and cables.

      I did buy my New 2018 Highlander Limited AWD back on the 4th of July, I got Silver with a black interior and bench rear seat. I've got 4700 miles on as of Jan 19, I've driven it in the snow with 0 issues. One thing I noticed is the 2019 hasn't changed from the 2018, does anyone see any changes? So far this is a great vehicle and I expect no problems in the near future.

      Ann Dan - I think your asking about the price so this is it .. I got it on a 4th of July sale with the Toyota also giving a $1750 cash back, with Taxes and Tags I think it came to $41,500. I'd say that is probably the average people were paying for a 2018 at the time. I have no complaints about the price it jus seems everything cost an arm and a leg anymore. When I was in the Army and Just before I shipped overseas I remember looking at a brand new 1969 Chevy SS 396 Chevel at the dealership for only $3,700.

    The one annoying thing about the Highlander is the lack of space behind the 3rd row, of course not everyone needs that option. The 2008 has almost no room but it gets better as the years go up. Not sure why there is so little room, the Q7 has a ton but 3rd row is perhaps more cramped. Most people are only using it for kid storage / transportation any ways but it's one annoyance I find and god, no one wants to drive a mini van :)

    Cold much??? 1:36 😨😂 Great review! The snow button on my 06' HL also activates independent ABS braking of the wheels when you are turning and sliping situation. Takes about a solid second and half but it kicks well enough. Volo's system is much faster also more costly. Also the new engine uses a timing chain, not belt, for durability. And 6 speed transmission for better MPG.

    It's all irrelevant unless you have snow tires. Going forward with an all wheel drive is easy even without the help of the snow button but then you need to turn or brake and that is when you will come unstuck. Touring tires are 100% useless and dangerous. All season tires slightly better and good snow tires are like night and day in comparison.

      USARMYvietnamVET1969 thanks for the feedback 👍 all the snow button does is drastically reduce the sensitivity of the gas pedal to try to prevent you from sending too much power to the wheels. You’re correct about the far right button, that is the AWD lock button. So instead of the car deciding where to send power, it creates a 50/50 split between the front and rear wheels. It’s a nice SUV - I really enjoyed driving it.

      The snow button changes the shift points, and if I recall starts you off in 2nd gear rather than 1st gear to cut down on the wheel spin issues to help give a bit better traction. Course without AWD you may want to check out some dedicated snow/ice tires, even so with an AWD/4WD vehicle, having snow/ice tires is a huge difference.

    I've got about 2 feet of snow over here in St. Paul, Minnesota. I really want to know how the Highlander would do. It's next in line for being my next car. (Current Camry owner)

      Tong Yang I lived in St Paul as a little kid and I remember all the snow (and the cold more than anything). We get a lot of snow in NY as well. The Highlander did pretty well. Got through everything; never had to worry about getting stuck. Only issues were traction -had to go extremely slow around turns and stop more carefully than I do in my own vehicles. It certainly could have been the tires, but my Ford Fusion and BMW X5 (no comparison to the Highlander of course) are both AWD with all-season tires and have much better grip in the snow than this Highlander did.

    Overall good review, I live in the NE, and snow is a major concern for me. I have had 4 wheel, all my life, and am not sold on this "all wheel" as of yet. I am looking at one of these for my wife. We get heavy lake effect snow here, and am just trying to find the vehicle that will get her from point A to B with no issues. I am assuming you live in the NE yourself with the dinner plate size snow flakes falling in the background. How has it been for you over the past few weeks in this bitter cold and snow? Thanks for your time sir.

      Jason Moss yes I live in western NY and get a lot of lake effect as well. I don’t own this Highlander but did get to drive it for a few days in some decent snow. It got through easily but the handling wasn’t the best (could’ve been the tires). Not a comparison but my Ford Fusion and BMW X5 are both AWD and both handle significantly better in the snow than the Highlander. I had to drive a lot slower and be very careful around turns. Again could’ve had a lot to do with the tires although they had plenty of tread (~75%) remaining. I think this Highlander XLE gives you a lot for 40k though (leather, nav, seats 8, etc.)

      2017 model year was a huge mid-life upgraded. New engine and transmission with interior / exterior designs changed as well. We may see a 2020 model year all new Highlander. I very much doubt Toyota will change anything for 2019 model year.

      @tinhinnh 6 лет назад

      Tom Chan Still looks and sells good. They usually go by the 5yr cycle but you may be right. Trans is new but engine is just tweaked. Exterior is not new - just a new face and here and there.

    Thanks for your time and effort. The Highlander is A superb car but if I pay $42k for an SUV, it's gonna be A 4Runner. Better 4WD system in the right model and overall more rugged and that 4.0, well, it may be old but is A proven engine and has A lot of torque, and it's just reliable. I know the 2GR is A good engine past 2009, but I think overall the 4.0 is more reliable. Just my opinion, though..Toyota has stuck with both engines and in A lot of vehicles for one reason, because they work. Toyota sticks with what works and tweaks what doesn't. All other automakers change engines every two years and offer tons of engines to keep people coming to them. That's proof people want the next this or that, not reliability...

      zero to 60 in 6 seconds Toyota’s (and Lexus) have proven to be very reliable. I know quite a few Toyota and Lexus owners that have very high mileage on their vehicles with no issues.

      I own a 2013 Highlander Hybrid Limited and a 1997 4Runner Limited. Both have been long paid off and run like tops. 4Runner has 350,000+ miles and Highlander with 130,000+ miles. 4Runner is great in town beater car but the nod goes to the Highlander for highway cruising as it eats miles up with little drama and a comfy ride. I traded in an 02 Sequoia for the Highlander and I miss the cargo space of Sequoia so I'm awaiting delivery on a 2019 Lexus LX570 to add to the stable.

      As I'm mostly a city and urban driver I must have real-time traffic, so Android Auto is a mandatory requirement. In my older Kluger (Highlander) the maps are out of date, cost AU$200+ for an updated CD and of course there is no real-time traffic. Therefore I only use my phone for navigation.

    • @SirGregory
      @SirGregory 6 лет назад

      randomrazr it’s actually not my car, but if I was buying a Highlander I’d consider the Limited for the aesthetic upgrades. Although the only feature this XLE lacked that I care about is the moonroof. Otherwise it had nav, leather, and the most powerful engine option which is really all I care about personally.

    *I own one of these and this review is total shite. Doesn't even come close to what this car is capable of. With a good set of tires under it and a capable driver, this vehicle will rival a lot of 4-wheel drive pickups in handling and assurance on icy, snowy roads & highways. It really is a marvel of modern automotive engineering...Plus it gets 30 MPG...My 4X4 Ford gets about half that on a good day.*
