Amazing. I have always loved that song so much. Sad and truthful. I still have the LP record in my collection.

...and you should be proud! As for your Great Aunt, there is NO ONE else quite like her. I have been inspired by her music and spirit for decades, and saw her last night live in concert for the first time in Seattle. She appeared with Jesse. Michel and Leroy from BRUTHERS FROM DIFFERENT MUTHERS. An amazing show. Searing truth, gorgeous ballads, hard rocking reality! Love her, and I love the guys now...and hey! Love to you! Chris O

In some cases Buffy Ste.-Marie has changed her lyrics over the years (in most cases slightly). I have the Buffy Ste. Marie Songbook (1970), and her original lyrics for Now That the Buffalo's Gone have significant differences than the version that's on You Tube. I don't know if Generation ever changed (it's not old enough to be in the Songbook).

someone asked for chords to this song. I figured a version and I sing it at open mics. I sing and play for charity and no money in my pocket. When I sing a cover I always honor the artists and I have a record I purchase of all of my favorites. I have just about every record Buffy recorded in various formats and still have many on original vinyl. Am kids were sent from F Heaven inside to G lead you to the Em future Am wrap their eyes in F blindfolds and still G they'll find their Em way Am blind their lives with F pills and lies and G still they'll find their Em vision And F soon they'll leave you to your E yesterday Chorus F And they'll sing goodbye scars of G history and E goodbye banker's trust F Aquarius is shining and the E sun is one of us and F me I don't wanna G go to the moon I'm gonna Em leave that moon Am alone
I (F) just wanna dance with the G Rosebud Em Sioux this Am summer followed by F yes G yes, yes Em repeat pattern for rest of song. at the end of the song instead of Buffy's wait for you brown eyed man, from me singing as I sing just wanna dance with the Rosebud Sioux, I change the line do Pray for me I'm on my way to be with you and then I ad lib lines like we'll dance the nights away with medicines songs ad lib and fade.

Frank - that's awesome - I also figured out guitar chords for "Generation", and mine are exactly the same as yours! I never play out, just sing and play for my own enjoyment, and this has long been one of my favorites. Yes, Buffy's songbook is awesome, with special Buffy drawings and sidebar texts, and her notes on special tunings and fingerpicking styles for various songs. - it's much more than just a standard chord book.
The song "Generation" has a special meaning for me, and I vote with those saying the correct lyric is "goodbye scars of Hitler" - that's just the right meaning. I was very close to someone who for a very long time struggled to overcome the 'scars of Hitler' - she was a daughter of a Holocaust survivor, and I've known of several other children of Holocaust survivors, and it's quite clear that it takes more than one "Generation" to recover from those scars. Such huge life tragedies seriously affect the lives of the children of the survivors. How Buffy was so wise to put that line in this song, I do not know; it seems like a minor miracle to me. But Buffy has given us many miracles. She's definitely for me a top five artist for life (and that's saying a lot!) as there are and have been so many great songwriters and artists out there. Thanks for your note, it definitely struck a chord.

You may be right, It could be scars. I thought it was skies. Every website including Buffy's list it as STARS so I went that.

@saltcitysuesey I assumed the "stars of Hitler" were those worn by people sent to concentration camps in WW2. However, your interpretation, linking Hitler's stars to Aquarius makes sense. It's said that great works of art can be interpreted in many valid ways, depending on what each viewer brings with them. Thus, great art is interactive.

I believe it was originally, "scars of Hitler." When she recorded it, many years later, it was, "scars of history." Perhaps she felt we'd moved far enough from WWII to justify that. Also, she's singing for a younger audience as well as we, original fans.

Hi, I'm the original poster of this song/video as it was taken from my 45 collection many years ago. There's been a lot of talk about the lyrics and I'm pretty sure now that the line "but it really doesn't matter cause their children hear me well" is actually but it really doesn't matter cause their children are healing well. Any thoughts?
