He was diagnosed aged 3 with Optic Glioma and an inoperable brain tumour which over a matter of months caused him to lose his vision. The poor child died in 2009 aged just 8.
Even if you're not blind and not clicking, if you close your eyes and listen CAREFULLY you'll notice that the air sounds different when you're close to things than when you're farther away.
This is probably stating the obvious but I'd think this could be enhanced greatly with earpieces and an electronic ping -- also maybe could be taken out of the human auditory range -- might even work better that way, per bats. I'd think higher frequency would have finer resolution, which could then be reinterpreted via the earpieces into a well-articulated picture.
konchog3 yesssssssssssssss yes yes you are on right vision and yess its possible you hit on the nose everything you just said happens to every one but just in different aspects all of the hearing vision through a vibration can send a picture and let's practice you can figure out what's that image is through a frequency brought back by Soundwaves wow u open a door
konchog3 If he’s been blind since birth, it won’t produce any “picture” at all...he would perceive it in some other way than what we do when we picture things in our head. people blind since birth dream in smells and sound and feeling. They have no idea what vision is even like. Trying to get blind people to understand vision is virtually impossible. He can *sense* distance...but he can’t picture anything. The method you’re describing is a great idea. One boy who did this, was able to “see” almost as good as someone with sight. His skill at echolocation was honed naturally. He rode a bicycle, played basketball, etc. Seems impossible, but he did it.
there was kid years ago called ben underwood his eyes got removed due to glaucoma as child, he could play basketball, ride a bike and even sit there on a gameboy and play games using echolocation and more was really amazing to watch
well, we are animals but I get the point xD Also I think the title is because the episode goes about dolphins but they decided to briefly talk about Sam and his echlocation skills
We believe the visually impaired deserve certificates and diplomas they can read and understand. Made on thin wood, using a textured seal and Braille writing. This kid is a hero and he should have his awards be something he can read.
I have been blind since birth. I also echo-locate. Under no circumstances do I make a noise, unless it's my cane sweeping from side to side. I've learned to sense the air bouncing off buildings, vans, cars, or walls, as well as bus shelters, etc. I hear it with my ears. I can tell whether the object is solid or not. I do not need the aid of a click of the tongue. I think this way should be taught, rather than the click of the tongue method. It may be perceived as anti-social in the wider society, and viewed by sighted piers as strange.
i wish him nothing but success and happiness in life ... poor kid .. wish he could see the world .. then again glad he dont have to see alot of other cold stuff that goes around every day .. glad he's learning to live with it tho ....
Just give him a few more years, and the clicks would be more subtle, and his hand movements would become even more subtle. And he would develop extraordinary smell skills too.
He's so adorable but this is some amazing developments it's just fascinating though but I have a question do blind people prefer there eyes open or closed
they should just give him a clicker that makes a sound that echoes even better, that we he just has to press on it a couple times and he knows where everything is
human eyesight is good enough that we dont need such a thing as echo location, blind people body automaticly develop it because their body lose the sense used to see their surounding
The sixth sense, echo location. What is the name for the sixth sense? For example taste, touch, sight, smell and hearing.I just don't know what is the name for the sixth sense?
+Offtrailed Dino There's loads, the traditional 5 are just the obvious ones: Proprioception - you can sense your body's position without moving or looking. Heat (don't have to touch, we can detect infrared through our skin) Balance (arguably a specialist sense of touch) Rotational inertia (arguably as above) Acceleration (you can sense going into freefall without using any other standard sense) etc etc...
Silat Merpati Putih has better program for blind people, we tech them to get vibravision ability. We are able to differentiate between the different energies and perceive the weight, volume, velocity, color, shape and substance of any object
the moment this wonderful child began to speak I got teary eyed.. such a beautiful soul and attitude he has. He is going to do such amazing things
that boy has a lot to teach to grown people.
bullshit
Much respect for the father.
Rest in peace, Sam Oldridge. You are an angel.

Bruh I just got finished crying over Ben Underwood...
My god. This is so sad.
Jesus Christ. I did not expect this
What a sweet and adorable child. My heart is with him.
Honestly this kid gives me so much hope, he’s so positive and he’s dedicated. I love it wish him nothing but the best.

"If you can't see, your other senses get better". Very true. When you lose one sense it heightens the others. He's a very bright child. 🙏✌️
I wish you a long and happy life
Bit pointless typing it when he's blind...
lorenzo maes if we lived in a world that lacked software commonly used by the blind that converts text to speech, you'd be quite right!
He died from an aggresive glioma two years later :(
yes
What an amazing young lad, good luck Sam in everything you do...

The title: Extraordinary ANIMALS
well, we are animals but I get the point xD Also I think the title is because the episode goes about dolphins but they decided to briefly talk about Sam and his echlocation skills
He could use a handheld high frequency beeper to decrease the interval between echos.

blind people doesn't have to have gray eyes like toph.

Remarkable
An interesting experiment would be to have this kid spend a lot of time with dolphins and whales and have him try to communicate with them.
Anybody watching this should absolutely look up Ben Underwood.
God rest his soul. He made incredible strides.
It's wonderful that he's been learning to do this so young! Imagine his skills in a few years. I love his attitude!👍😎
There was a boy on the Oprah show that navigated life like this too. Unfortunately he died from cancer

Im reading a book an immense world it makes me think can people learn from animals about senses
how are you supposed to echolocate using your sight? 0:03
Having been amazed at this I googled his name and found out rather heartbreakingly that the poor little chap died a few years ago.
You sure you're not confusing him to Ben Underwood?
Is Ben underwood spelled the same as Sam Oldridge? Because if not i am pretty sure i am not confused.
