    I am in northern ca. I dig them up when they are done blooming and store them in a paper bag and replant the following year.

      I hadn't thought of digging them up and storing them. Thanks for the suggestion!

    I like saffron in a tomato pasta sauce, it’s a wonderful addition. I’ve heard of it being used in cream brûlée as well.

    I always use saffron in my Bisque de homard/crevettes, if it is not used in the cooking process the bisque taste is flat. It's magic stuff. Plan to grow my own next year, it might be even better than the premium saffron I buy at a specialist in Europe.

    Will they propagate naturally? Are they bee pollinated?

    • @gardenwiseadventures
      @gardenwiseadventures  2 месяца назад +1

      Bees do visit the flowers, but they are a bulb and spread by the bulbs dividing underground like crocus do.

    Where is the best place to buy these bulbs at?

      I bought these online from several different websites. I do like ordering from High Country Gardens.

    They're not short lived. Dig them up and you'll have a cluster of bulbs to redistribute.

    I ordered a bunch of saffron bulbs, I know thats not the right word, and almost every one of them has sprouted. Mom watered them and I now have 4 flowering. I wont water them again and will let them go dormant for the winter.

      I am in Utah. I have heard Saffron can grow in Las Vegas, so it should be OK where you are!
      They are dormant in the summer, so you should only water it sparingly during that time of year. They like to stay moist in the winter.

    I have just a handful of crocus flowers, but they only grow in the spring. Are they saffron crocuses?

    • @gardenwiseadventures
      @gardenwiseadventures  11 месяцев назад +1

      They are actually different. Saffron crocus blooms in the fall. The scie tific name is Crocus sativus.

    Hi I live in Tennessee, zone 7a. Can you grow saffron in clay soil?

    • @gardenwiseadventures
      @gardenwiseadventures  11 месяцев назад

      As long as the clay doesn't stay wet, they seem to do OK. Saffron needs to dry out over the summer months and get watered when it's actively growing in the fall and winter.

    Do you think I could grow saffron in northwest Washington state?

    • @gardenwiseadventures
      @gardenwiseadventures  Год назад +2

      That is a good question! I am not sure. They require a dry, hot summer and cold, but not too cold, winter. They will rot in heavy wet soil. If your area can offer those conditions, you might be able to do it!

      I live in Seattle and I have grown Saffron successfully. I have had them in rectangular containers. They bloom in October and the leaves stay up until end of summer. Once the leaves are dried up, I take the containers to my garage until October when I see the flowers. They are fun to grow. But every few years, you need to replace the bulbs because they divide themselves and smaller once do not produce flowers. Hope this helps you.
