In my haste, I forgot to talk about the beautiful lyrics! To me, the "Perfume" signifies the lingering sweetness of life. Countless generations passing down their love that stays with us like a comforting scent, making us grateful to be alive. I'd love to hear your interpretation in the comments! ❤

Thinking about the word perfume: it is not just a scent, it is a mix of many volatile ingredients in sometimes extremely small almost homeopathic quantities. Maybe that is why Tuomas used this word as we all have countless pieces of dna in us from all those millions of ancestors...
It's MORE than that. We are the perfume of our ancestors, but we will also be the ancestors for perfume in the future. We need to be grateful to be alive and for our offspring to be alive, when we are long gone.
I dont understand why so many reactors complain about the mix in the corrus. It was purposeful so the choral voices (our ancestors) ring out. I think its perfect. ✌️

I've listened to a version by a fan in which they brought the vocals more to the front. Yes, you do her hear and the lyrics better, but no, the song overall isn't better. It sounds as it should in this version, you notice it when you actually hear the other version. And I can hear the words quite clearly desire all the instrumentation and orchestral work coming together. But I respect that others may find it off-putting not to have the vocals in the forefront. I guess I listened to enough classical music to appreciate that vocals can also be simply another instrument within a composition 😊
Tuomas is amalgamating the heaviness of Darkwoods My Betrothed his Dark Metal band, the airy folk music of Auri and mixing it with classic Nightwish groove.
At this stage of his life, why the hell not.
This is the perfect sequel to Greatest Show on Earth.
Don’t feel bad for the radio silence. Life hits all in different locations. Sometimes it’s a kidney punch, other times it’s a gentle hand laid on the shoulders.

People need to remember that Nightwish tracks are not about showcasing anyone including Floor. It’s all about the track and each member is as forward in the mix as they need to be. I’ve got no problem at all with how it’s been mixed as that’s how Tuomas planned it.

The mix of the vocals is unusual, but I like it. The song feels more immersive for me that way. It's like you are swept away by the stream of time through the music. It just gets better with every listen.

Nightwish has two different mixes. This video has a so called athmospheric mix with all the animal noises and water.
The normal mix to my unprofessional ears sounds better.
You've to listen this piece multiple times. It's growing on you...
I’ve repeated this about 20+ times. I’m always picking up something new on the next listen. Plus watching some of these reactors as they get me thinking on something else I missed. This song is becoming more epic to me ears. Unbelievable Tuomas’s genius mind!

I started with original release at 430am yesterday, then spent a lot of the day watching other reactions. It is a grower. I love it so much more now.
Many have said they want Floors' voice more prominent; Kai weighed in to say that it was intentional as it is more a choral feel they wanted so she is just above the choir but not so strong.
Recordings can never capture the real magic of Nightwish Live anyway.
Btw, Tuomas wrote this whole album during lockdown. He said awhile ago that he had this one done, and the next one almost done. This was at least a year or two ago so he probably has a 3rd done, lol.

I like it, its more casually catchy than a lot of recent Nightwish, which can be a bit challenging for just listening to in the background. The mix is an odd choice, not sure why they went for that, but its not a deal breaker by any means.

My love of this band brought me to your channel a few yrs back.
Here we are again!
I hear a lot of similar comments about Floors voice being too quiet during the chorus.
During the chorus you will notice she is singing along with a choir, something not typical for Nightwish, at least for an entire chorus.
This was a deliberate choice to give the chorus a bigger impact without focusing on a singular voice. Whether or not this effect resonates with every listener is personal taste.
Kai alluded to this in a social post responding to some of the criticism.
I suppose Floor can't be the focal point of every segment of every song.
I'm personally good with it.
It's a great song.

Great reaction, thanks. I feel reassured hearing you as a native english speaker had problems with understanding the lyrics at first time hearing the song. Floors voice is clear and not clear at the same time here. After looking up the lyrics it got better and i like them. And i think what made it hard for me to understand is, that it is very lyrical, at some point scientific. Some words you probably seldom use in everyday small talk. Well - as a 79 year old Englishman ..... I have no trouble with the mix.
I am rather depressed by the number of deluded commentators on here who are convinced that they know better than Tuomas. Arrogant presumption !
@@richardwest6358 There's a big difference between arrogant criticisms and simply sharing subjective opinions. NW themselves admitted that the mixing in the chorus was a different approach and a stylistic choice. Some people like it, some people don't - end of story.
No one is saying they know better. It's one small detail in a song that everyone loves overall. This is a forum for us to share our thoughts - what value is there in positive comments if we can't be fully honest and express critiques from time to time? We have these opinions because we love and care for the music.
It's great to see how passionate people are but I'm seeing an unhealthy level of over-zealous defending of the band. There's nothing to get depressed about and calling people deluded or arrogant is just ridiculous.
I think the mixing in this song is intensional. Tuomas is a perfectionist what comes to music. Edit: I read, that some platforms plays this song a bit differently.

First of all, what a great song man. I needed to listen to it a few more times before commenting. I hear you on the mix, for sure. But... this is not uncommon on their studio recordings if you ask me. For example, just compare the vocals of 'Yours is an Empty Hope' live to the vocals on the album recording. Big difference in the mix there. As always with NW, things come alive when played live! No doubt this one is going to be a banger on stage!

Surely Tuomas had his reasons why he mixed it the way he did. But there are lots of reactions out there complaining about it. So nightwish arena brought out a 'Floorversion' with uplifted mixing.

From what I read somewhere else, Floors weak mixed voice was done by purpose. But nearly no one gets the benefit of this. Me neither.
But I love tis song. For me a really good entry song into the new album by it‘s building character.

Welcome back! I missed your reactions! About the mix: this is exactly how Tuomas wanted it to sound. He wanted the chorus to feel like a choir and Floor to be a part of it. Personally I'm not overly excited about this song but who knows, maybe the album will include some true headbangers...

Toy at the end 'steals' the song. I just love the warmth and te wisdom in his voice. And you had me in stiches over Tuomas is Treemas.

This music piece is actually BRILLIANT composed.
The two notes in the beginning with choir and later piano, pah-pah...pah-pah A minus-G minus---B minus-F minus is also used by Floor in her phrases and strings in the first chorus. It's a red threat threw the music, so well done. There is no flaw in my opinion, Floor's voice is one of the instruments in this piece. Nothing is done unintentionally and for me, as a musician myself I can only say BRILLIANT work.
The red threat: 3:11 3:44 Floor repeating these 4 tones: 4:13 7:13 7:27 piano 11:08 Floor 11:37 etc etc. Even Emppu's nasty chunky riffs are build on this. 15:10 the choir picks it up again while Troy sings, This is SOLID stunning composing. There is NOTHING to fix.

For me, it's like the remains of a perfume left in the air even though people are gone... Their scent is still there. We're, in a way, the perfume that remains of our ancestors.
As you did surely read already, in this song, Floor was meant to not be in the forefront, rather part of the choir. That's why she's not sticking out as usual. You could check out a video made by fans that have put the vocals more to the front, but honestly, this chorus works better. When I heard the other version I understood even better why Tuomas chose to mix it this way

Although it was a conscious choice about Floor's vocal mix, and a weird one at that, the song Itself is Freaking Awesome !!!
And the video was Epic too !!! Plust that statement, "You are the dream of many ancestors", is so Powerfull...
For my personal taste, the mix needs a little tweaking for sure (you are not the only one)!!!

I just listened to the "album version" (ruclips.net/video/uDAN9F3YkpI/видео.html) and it seems Floor isn´t dominant in the chorus deliberately. I´m not a big fan of this decision, but the song is starting to grow on me like this anyway.
You mentioned the rate Tuomas is pumping out new albums with: I think he is bound by the contract with the label. And I don´t like this. Artists need freedom to come up with something original. As this song is great, it kind of reminds me of Pan and basically the last album generally. I still have to listen to the rest of the album, but still. And maybe this is just the sound of current Nightwish, and there isn´t much to be done about it.
Many have already commented on the mix and the way in which it drowns out the vocals in the chorus. Some have defended the sound by suggesting that this is Tuomas's production and this is the way he wants it, but I agree with you and the many others that have pointed out that it seems wrong, rather than a choice. It is not just that I am a huge Floor fan, and want her vocals to stand out - every member of the band works to a common vision - but I can't see any purpose to the muddiness of the chorus. Ive have listened with headphones and with my hifi system through speakers. It sounds great apart from what is evidently a poor mixing choice.
I like this song, it is very Nightwish - or at least the Nightwish of the recent past - but I would like to hear Tuomas write a few more memorable melodies and pull back a little from the cinematic soundscapes. I feel he has moved in that direction and we will never get the simpler melodic song structures of old, as we had with Nemo, Sleepless Sun, Song of Myself, Ever Dream, Ghost River - take your pick - again.
Glad to hear I'm not alone with that. It does seem quite uncharacteristic of them but maybe it was intentional...I do empathize when it comes to mixing - especially with so many tracks like this song has. It can be easy to overlook something when you've heard it a million times in the studio. I do hope they'll fine tune everything for the album release. 🤞
Kai confirmed in his Facebook comment that it really is a choise they have made. In chorus Floor is a part of a choir. They know that some people will like it and some not, but that has been their choise. I personally love the chorus with the beautiful message of the song ❤

@@sariasikainen4410 I think the message is great and yes, Floor is one of multiple voices, but the fact you can't hear the lyrics during the chorus suggests that a bit of tweaking would have improved matters. They are the experts - Tuomas and his team, producer, engineer etc. - but I and many other listeners it seems, don't agree.

Great to hear it confirmed from the horse’s mouth that the band and their crew can’t be buggered to care about what their fans think.
For me it is a take on the meaning of life and fighting depression, a bit of a pick-me-up. All ancestors, all fighting for me, and the ones who come after, and what that represent. That every person has value, even if said person can't see it.

The mixing is on purpose. She is singing to us and not for us Thom,. There is nothing that they do not on purpose. buddy. Tuomas is just a genius.
We needed more of those classical vocals sweeping over that driving rhythm instead of Troy at the end , which made no sense . .......we all know this and the rest of the album will sound sooooo much better in 2/3 years when were hearing it Live .

The very nice video clip masks the weakness of this song. A lot of well-known material has been put into one song, and the production is not that good, Floor's vocals fall too far back in the more symphonic pieces.
