Airplanes definitely can dump their fuel. The main reason for this is if they need to make an emergency landing, they'll dump excess fuel before doing it, to reduce the risk of killing everyone in a gigantic fireball.

That's not the main reason, and not all planes can dump fuel - mostly only the larger airliners. They dump because a vast majority of emergency landings are executed on runways with wheels down, and planes have a maximum landing weight.

Aside from what Spielberg and Lucas were both going through in their personal lives, which contributed to the film's darker tone, they wanted Willie to be the "anti-Marion," to the point where Kate Capshaw even dyed her hair blonde for the role. Ke Huy Quan (the actor who played Short Round) did a promotional visit to the local arcade when they got a stand-up coin-operated version of this game in my home town one afternoon (I actually got to play a level of that game with him). He would later be cast in the role of Data in the movie "Goonies" (1985) and on the ABC television show "Head of the Class" (1991)

Gremlins and Temple of Doom are great case studies for classification.
Doom is a much more violent film than Gremlins but the traditional adventure storytelling and fantastical setting was enough to convince the BBFC to cut it down to a PG.
But because Gremlins is much more subversive _as a film_ with a real world setting and the constant undermining of environments that families usually associate with safety and security, the BBFC actually slapped it with a 15 rating.

If you read up on George Lucas, you see that most of his "life experience" came from watching old movies. He doesn't really understand people (which is why he's so famously bad at directing actors despite being great at directing FX and the technical aspects of filmmaking). Some telling quotes from George Lucas:
      - "Popcorn pictures have always ruled. Why do people go see these popcorn pictures when they're not good? Why is the public so stupid? That's not my fault." - George Lucas, 1997
      - "On the Internet, all those same guys that are complaining I made a change are completely changing the movie. I’m saying: ‘Fine. But my movie, with my name on it, that says I did it, needs to be the way I want it.'"
And, on the subject of Willie and why this second Indiana Jones movie had people ripping out hearts:
      - "I was going through a divorce, and I was in a really bad mood."
When asked if he actually intended to make such a direct metaphor, he admitted that he did.

Apparently he was a very famous Bollywood actor for decades, but to Western audiences this is what he is known for. It speaks to his credit that as the main villain he isn’t introduced until almost halfway through the film, and then only has limited scenes, but he is probably the most memorable part of this film. He plays it so delightfully and cheerfully evil, it’s a truly wonderful old-school villain performance.

Take a moment and think about what Katy Perry or Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, whomever... would be like in those situations. • @SPVFilmsLtd

Willie is the result of a very old, long discarded, comedy trope of the mid-20th Century that the writers wanted to revisit and mess around with.
The screenwriters had lived in India for some of their lives and part of Willie's role was to make commentary on how loud, abrasive, comfort-obsessed, unworldly and self-centered Westerners - Americans in particular - are when they're abroad and also use them as a comic foil. A lot of films from the 1940's to the 1980's had the "ditzy, loud, screaming, damsel in distress" trope and the writers thought it would be funny if they cranked it up to eleven so that Western audiences could appreciate how annoying that kind of archetype was.
Willie's success is very mixed - despite what Indian Jones fans will tell you, A LOT of people in the 80's found Willie hilarious (because they were always laughing at her expense), but it's fair to say about an equal number of people hated her because (unlike RAIDERS) rather than being a subversion of the classic Hollywood adventure movie damsel (like Marion), she was a farcical satire and just more annoying than funny.
I don't mind her, but I get the "joke" that she represents despite finding her not funny at all. But then, I've dealt with a lot of Westerners like her so she's not unusual or even particularly bad compared to others I've met and dealt with. Does she add value to an Indiana Jones movie? No, she doesn't. She's a bit of a waste, the wrong kind of comic relief character who is hindered by the fact that she's a deliberate parody of a dated archetype to show how Westerners look to foreign cultures.
That's partially the point of the gross-out feast too; both making fun of Westerners squeamishness of foreign foods AND ALSO showing how the majority vegetarian population of India sees people who eat meat and how that grosses them out.
TEMPLE OF DOOM is my favourite Indy film because it has really interesting ideas and tries to really subvert a lot of cultural perspectives of the era, but I have to admit nearly all of those subversions failed to connect with the audience. The screenwriters tried to have their cake and eat it too and as a result all those aspects came out muddled and confusing and annoying.

  • @tehdipstick
    @tehdipstick 2 года назад +10

"I wonder how Spielberg did this. Like, all the bats."
Well, from the looks of it he just filmed a swarm of bats returning to their cave/trees/roost in the morning after spending the night out looking for food. Bats tend to amass in large numbers as they're about to enter their roost. It also looks like they were filmed with a high-speed camera, then the footage was slowed down, which would account for the slow flapping of the wings, even though the frame rate is still relatively smooth.
Don't know if you caught it from the opening, but a lot of reactors seem to miss the fact that Temple of Doom is actually a prequel to Raiders of The Lost Ark rather than a sequel, so the events of this movie take place before the first one. (Edit: Seems you caught it. Nice.)

4:19 yes airplanes can dump their fuel. They do it to lighten the load on the aircraft. Aircraft take off with more fuel than they can safely land with so they burn it off in flight. This gives them more range. But if an emergency occurs and they have to land early they can dump the fuel to lighten the load then the aircraft can land safely.

Today's people don't often understand that you have to accept the cannons of the time period when the action is supposed to happen. My favorite Indy movie!
It simply has everything i could ever hope for from an adventure film and somehow manages to balance the dark and light tone brilliantly for me. They didn't play it safe and made it so different from the original while still feeling like an Indy flick! While i do think objectivly Raiders is better "film", i just love this one more. Incredible action and best John Williams score too in the series imo. I can see why people love "The last crusade" the most as the relationship between Indy and his dad is a great emotional core, but otherwise it is played little too safe for me, especially after this one.
Hating Willie i can understand but that was supposed to be her character, a spoiled gold digger who's spent most of her life at dinnerparties that gets dragged through the hell with Indy i could only imagine them acting exactly this way in real life. She never really bothered me personally and provided variety to the trio in the movie while also being different from Marion. Not every female character needs to be Ellen Ripley or Sarah Connor. She does become less selfish as the movie goes on and actually tries to help, though i don't blame you for missing that change.

Short Round is the best child sidekick in movies. He can fight, he's quick thinking, saved Indy's life twice, definitely less annoying than Willie.

Fun fact: the giant Sherpa that Indy flattens in the rock crusher is the same actor who played the giant Nazi that got chopped up by the propeller blades in Raiders.

The Big Terrifying Guy that gets crushed in the rock smasher is the same stuntman that fights Indy under the Flying Wing in Raiders, and gets a face full of propeller.

4:25 "I wonder if the fuel dump thing is a real thing?" Yes, it is, usually on widebody aircraft with extra tanks like the Boing 747 and 777. Not every aircraft has it, though... for example, the smaller 737 does not. George asked why would they dump fuel? Simple: To lose weight in the event of an emergency landing. A heavier plane is more likely to hit the ground hard and get damaged. Take the Boeing 777 for example. A full load of fuel is 47,890 gallons. That's roughly equivalent to the weight of 28 elephants!
Having said that, it doesn't happen very often because it's _expensive._ If a Boeing 777 had to dump all their fuel (which never happens), that's about $250,000 down the drain. Also, an airliner doesn't land with a full load of fuel. In fact, it almost never _takes off_ with a full load of fuel. The airlines very carefully calculate how much fuel the aircraft will need to get to its destination, plus a "reserve" in case of bad weather or a long queue (when the plane has to fly in a big circle while waiting for clearance to land), and that's how much fuel they load.

You've gotten the right idea about the Donkey Kong mine cats, but the way you've stated it is incorrect. The game levels are a homage to this sequence. DKC was 1994, a full 10 years after this movie.

Kate Capshaw (Willie) is married to Stephen Spielberg.
Kate - "Steeephenn! There's a spider in heere!"
    Spielberg - "....sigh..."
I know she's not actually like that, just a joke I've always enjoyed from a podcast I listen to.
