What a lovely cover! You know the old fine China dinnerware that is white with the blue print on it? My brain is completely blanking on what it is called, but that is what the book cover makes me think of. And I love that there's a map!! I always get very excited when books have maps in them!
I had the same reaction. Blue and white dishes with a Chinese motif. Over here, they're mostly referred to as Willowware, because most show willow trees (and birds). Blue and white seems to be a very common (and pleasing) color combination and not just in Asia. I wanted to ask what direction the river Mel flowed and what geologic formation formed the substrate, but that would be impertinent. It's good farmland and well drained, so we can assume some limestone in the section.
I hadn't thought of that, but blue and white china was very popular in 18th and 19th century England, so that fits perfectly! So, the River Mel flows left to right on the map (south-west to north-east). I know, because the map illustrator asked me, to make sure he drew that correctly - amazing attention to detail! I haven't thought about the geological formation, but I'll trust you on the limestone.

Hmm, no, that won't be accurate. I'm not sure if that's the export/airport edition accidentally on Blackwells or the future mass market paperback with the wrong date, so I'd say best to avoid the paperback edition on Blackwells and stick to the hardback.
