You never seem to lack inspiration and this video proves it! Thank you for all these book suggestions about women and houses of mystery. Your skillful writing about the mystifying activities surrounding Hartwood Hall made it a captivating read that was too quickly at an end.
Yes, this is my favorite trope, too! Kate Morton also does these well.
Thank you i loved this talk.
Also there is The Secret Garden, Frances H Burnett where Mary Lennox enters a large, mysterious mansion.
A good gothic horror of this trope is Mexican Gothic by Silvia Morena Garcia, your quip about mushrooms for The Ghost Wood reminded me of it. This is one of those tropes that I do love but I don't read enough of. The Nesting and The Beholders really grabbed my attention.
I love this trope as well! Some great recs here, I've definitely jotted a few down.
I love that UK Paperback cover 😍 also, yes, one of my favorite tropes!
-Sierra
Great list -- thank you so much! The Thirteenth Tale is one of my favorites.
I love this premise too! A couple more suggestions:
The Turn of the Screw; Henry James
Nine Coaches Waiting; Mary Stewart
Also, it's trashy, but Mistress of Mellyn by Victoria Holt.
I was thinking that Wuthering Heights could be termed a book in which a MAN comes to a house full of mysteries... why are there so few of those?
EDIT: I think Anne Bronte's novel Agnes Grey might be counted as this too? But it's arguable.
I still desperately need to read Fingersmith. We've been on a Le Fanu kick since you mentioned him in a previous video - Rach is currently reading Uncle Silas and we took immense joy in all the strange chapter titles in Wylder's Hand.
Absolutely loved Thirteenth Tale!
You've caused my book collection to grow a little. I already had some of the titles on your list, and now have a few more on the way. I am a horror fan. My tastes tend to lean towards atmospheric horror over gory horror. I also have a fondness for large old houses, and large old buildings in general. So I'm especially fond of books that combine the two. I'm not too picky. Books about women, men, and/or entire families arriving at large old houses full of mysteries, especially if there are some supernatural element involved, are right up my alley. 🙂 I just started reading The Secrets of Heartwood Hall.
So… my TBR has just grown by a few books, including a re-read I
Of Jane Eyre! 😊
Thanks for all the recommendations.
I think this might be my favourite trope. So many of your list I have loved plus got a few more to add to the tbr so thank you 😊 Uncle Silas in particular sounds excellent.
I also love this trope and you mentioned a few of my favorites. I just read Jamaica Inn and that certainly fits, as well. I also really liked Wakenhurst by Michelle Paver. That one isn't about a woman who arrives at a mysterious house, but rather about the daughter in the house who comes across mysterious happenings as an adult, so it's a variation on this theme. Thanks for adding to my TBR yet again!
I really do need to read Wakenhurst!
One of my favourite themes too, I really enjoyed your book!
I've read most of these too, but got 3 or 4 new recommendations which is great, thank you.
I've read a couple of Kate Morton books and would agree this is a theme for her - I enjoyed The Lake House a lot.
Ruth Ware has also written a couple of modern day ones - The Death of Mrs Westaway which has some nods to Rebecca and Agatha Christie, and The Turn of the Key which involves a smart house with all the modern stuff. It's maybe more a thriller but has gothic nods like a poison garden which I enjoyed. I'd also recommend some of Laura Purcell's books, The Silent Companions really fits this theme!
I have read The Silent Companions, but it was a bit too far towards horror for me, I'd say. I must read some Ruth Ware!
This is one of my favorite tropes. I've read six of the books you mention (including yours) and half of the rest were already on my TBR, but I'm thrilled to discover the ones I was unfamiliar with still. All the other books I thought to recommend have already been mentioned in other comments. One contemporary book that I'd add, although the woman doesn't move into the house, but works there, is Starling House by Alix E. Harrow.
Thanks! I always hear good things about Alix E. Harrow!
Thank you for the list of book recommendations as I enjoy mystery type of houses too.
This is one of my favorite tropes too, I've got such good recs from this video!
(If you haven't read any Kate Morton books, she's also someone who writes beautifully about mysterious houses and their secrets!)
Oh yes, I really like Kate Morton. I haven't read anything by her for too long!
With the exception of just a few, I've read nearly all of these titles (huge fan of the gothic here haha). One I just finished, and highly recommend, is Fyneshade by Kate Griffin. Very interesting in that the protagonist is an anti heroine. Also recommend The Black Feathers by Rebecca Netley - Very atmospheric and absorbing. Both were solid 4 🌟 reads for me.
I don't know much literature but I love Writer Charles Dickens my favourite poetry belongs life love ❤ thinks for you and continue reading 😅
My favorite too! I"ve been reading the retro ones lately.
Loved the premise of this video! Hope you'll do some other tropes as well! I loved the 13th tale! All of these are going into my TBR list
I'll have to think of some other tropes to cover!
The Thirteenth Tale is one of my favorites as well and I'm going to have to add some of these to my list. The only book I can think of that is not on your list is Mexican Gothic by Silva Moreno-Garcia, which is hit and miss with some people that I thought it was fun.
"Cozy Horror!" Hahahaha I like mystery but not anything graphic. I also like books that revolve around a bookshop. "The Lost Bookshop" by Evie Woods had both and was a quick read. It has an element of magical realism but not too fantastical. 🙂
I like this troupe too. I can add The Animals at Lookwood Manor by Jane Healy to the list. Have you seen the South Korean movie The Handmaiden based on Fingersmith?
I haven't, but I've heard good things!
If you didn't read it, I recommend The observations by Jane Harris!
I am now so mich more excited to read Haunting of Hill House, I kept putting it off thinking it would be more horror leaning 😅
It's definitely not as horror as you might think! I struggle with horror and I loved it.
Have you read The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell? I think it's just what you're asking for.
Thanks Katie I agree, The Thirteenth Tale is one of my favourites too Just finished reading Fingersmith Do ‘Bitter Orange’ and ‘The Hoarder’ qualify?
I haven't read either of those two, but perhaps I should!
Of course The Turn Of The Screw(albeit a short work)comes to mind although had the trope not exclusively referred to the fairer sex I would have thought Dracula was the daddy of them all.😁
You're like the main character in Persuasion.
Three cheers for Mrs Radcliffe once again, then. 😉
Does Katie look like the girl on the cover of Uncle Silas?
GREAT video & recommendations!! 🎉 🩷
I was so happy when I saw your book at Barnes & Noble a few months ago but wanted to wait to get in paperback.
Yesterday I was browsing there at the bookstore looking for NOTHING in particular so I went to check out the mystery/thrillers & look at Agatha Christie's books. As I continue to browse... BAM!! There's YOUR book in paperback.😂🩷🩷🩷 I got my own copy & sooo look forward to reading it.
Greetings to you Katie from West Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A.
Have a wonderful reading month! 🙂
Oh lovely! It's exciting that it's out there in Barnes & Nobles :)
