HOW YOUR CREDIT SCORE IS CALCULATED:
-35%: On-time Payment History
This means that you always pay your debts and credit cards on time, as agreed - without ever missing or being late on a payment.
-30%: Utilization Rate
This calculates how much credit you have available, versus how much of that you’re actually using. The less you use, the better.
-15%: Average Age Of Credit
Overall, lenders see that the longer you’ve had your accounts open for, and in good standing - the better the chances are that you will be a responsible, experienced borrower.
-10%: Types Of Credit
This means that lenders want you to have experience handling MULTIPLE types of loans, just to prove to them that you know how to handle different aspects of debt.
-10%: Number Of Credit Inquires
The more hard inquiries you have - the lower your score will be because lenders are worried that you’re out there actively trying to seek new loans and credit.
HOW I GOT AN 847 CREDIT SCORE:
No Late Payments - Ever. Credit was opened in 2012.
0-1% Credit Utilization Across Credit Cards
Average Age Of My Credit: 12.6 Years Old (Newest Account Over One Year)
Credit Mix: 8 Revolving Accounts out of 13. 6 Have been paid off, in full. 5 Mortgages, all paid on time. Large variety of past auto loans and other debts that have been successfully paid off.
HOW YOU CAN DO SOMETHING SIMILAR:
FIRST - Apply for a No Annual Fee Credit Card
The reason behind this is that - the longer your credit cards stay active - the longer your credit history remains open - and the more established your average account age will be.
SECOND - Always Pay Off Your Balances - IN FULL - By The Time They’re Due!
Never carry a balance on a credit card, and never spend money that you weren’t planning to spend, anyway. All it takes to build credit is a few small purchases that get paid off in full.
THIRD - Open ANOTHER no annual fee credit card after 6-12 months
The more credit you have, the lower your overall utilization, the more positive tradelines are reported…and, the higher your score will be.
FOURTH - after 12 months, you can apply for “rewards cards” like the American Express Gold.
Even though this one isn’t necessary for a good credit score, certain cards can be used in such a way that they not only pay for themselves - but, you can also turn a profit.
FIFTH - Continue adding “new” lines of credit over time.
Again, this one isn’t “required” to have a higher score, but it does help (OVER TIME) if you have a mortgage, auto loan, lease, or other payment plan.
And SIXTH - Once you’ve followed the above - Just Wait.
This is the part where patience goes a long way - and, once you get your score above 780 - you can pretty much get the lowest rates anywhere you go.

Another tip: If you have a credit card with an annual fee that you no longer want to use, don't cancel it. Call the company and do a product change to a different card without a fee. You won't get the sign up bonus, but the card history including the starting date will carry over.
what if there’s no alternative
Or ask them to waive the fee to keep you as a customer.

Damn, and here I thought my 802 was good. The only category that I'm not green in is the credit-age, which I can't help.
I got to 850, but only for a single month. I took a screenshot for bragging rights. It is important do differentiate between Fico score & those other types like the “vantage” score.

Great job dude, I’m trying to do the same myself, what’s the first credit card you got?
Easily gonna get there
@isaacgamez3338 100% recommend the chime credit booster card if you have no credit. It acts like a debit card and builds your credit so that you can get others. The biggest problem I found is I couldn't get cards because I didn't have a good score/no score but to build score I needed a card so it was a revolving issue. However that chime card is given to anyone.

753 here at 20. Feeling the same way. Only thing keeping us down is credit age
When u gonna talk about what we really wanna know?
*Kamel has angrily entered the chat* hehe
Hi Graham! Your older videos about this topic helped me get my credit score from nothing to 780 in two years, so thank you!
I do have a question regarding payment though. I have three credit cards, and like clockwork every other month my credit drops 20 points then rises 20 points. I’m stuck in this cycle. I think it has something to do with my revolving utilization but I can’t figure it out.
Good advice!! Listen to him and in a few years your credit score will be great!
Thanks!
More credit videos plz it was the first video I saw from your channel years ago
If your credit is bad but you pay off all your debts, will you still be able to get a mortgage?
Also wondering this
Not likely. And if you do you're gonna have an interest rate that's absurd.
Lenders care more about debt to income combined with tax returns. If you have a low credit score because of high credit utilization, that'll help your credit score over time if you pay it off. But if you have any late payments, that could affect the chances of getting a mortgage. Realistically, they'll care more about debt to income - so if you eliminate installment debt, you're a safer borrower.
My credit score is 880 and i don't do anything except paying my bills on time.
I believe that's a Vantage score or different algorithm, not Fico 8!
899(Canadian)... Credit is a "choose your own adventure" story. Choose wisely
Damn son! 899 is crazy coming from the US. Any tips?
I just turned 21 got my first credit card. Currently at 691. Useful knowledge. Want to get in the real estate market
how to get our money unfrozen for free?
The credit inquires is kinda dumb imo. Like why do I get penalized for getting credit to help boost my credit score utilization if that’s what they want you to do…
16:10 Do these ever expire? Like if I have travel points, it don’t use them for a year, so I lose them?
Graham, you only did this video to flex that mortgage rate 😂
;)
Always enjoy open and honest personal finance content, although one thing I’m noticing being in the UK vs the US is that in the US the models behind the scores are published and if you mess up its your own fault where as in the UK there not really published. If you pay for your credit report (i do with Experian and Equifax) you get a few more insights as to factors that make up your score. Interestingly in terms of utilisation under 20% is good for equifax but under 25% is good for Experian. I also have the same score as Graham but in the UK that only puts me in the ‘fair’ score bracket, I still have ‘good’ and ‘very good’ to achieve
well well well..... we meet again graham. welcome back
:)

I'm 26 with a 794 right now, I'm sure after time I'll be above an 800and maybe when I'm Grahams age I'll be at the same score as him.
I love the Wells Fargo card. 2% on everything- no messing with the categories or thinking which card to use
Wow Graham, I was actually talking to my wife about this tipic last week. and guess what, you read my mind. I'm actually sending this video to her. Thanks again.
I used to think having a credit card was just asking for trouble. Now, I see it as this tool for building a solid financial future if you know how to play the game.
Yes a solid future of slavery.
Trust in Jesus, He is the only Way
Graham, my parents took charge of signing me up for and paying my credit cards. They missed some payments and one of my medical bills went to collections. Now I am more knowledgeable and have started to become more responsible and almost have my score to 700. I was just wondering if this will continue to affect my credit and for how long. You said yours was perfect for all 12.5 years. Do they look that far back to get your score?
I had a score of 842 but then I paid my car off and somehow after I got the title they said I owed a $15 late fee. I had moved and didn’t get the notice for a month. Got a 30 day delinquency on my report even tho I actually didn’t owe them anything. It cost me 85 points even tho they corrected it.
Yikes :/
Yikes…
I think you can make a notation on your credit report explaining that.
It may help if you needed to get a loan of some sort, and wanted to get the rate you earned before they messed it up.
I’m now realizing it’s not so easy trying to put bills on CC because a lot of companies only want payments made with debit/checking accounts 😢but i do love the life hack!

This is the single most useful video I have ever watched, thank you.
i have a 667 idk how i just got my first credit card last month
this video has come at the perfect time, my credit dropped significantly and i’m working to get it back up!
Good luck! Hope this helps!
I have no mortgage (house paid off) or car notes... my score can't get above 820 for some damn reason... I pay my cards off within a week in full.
The old Graham is back. Haven’t seen a credit card video in a while. 😂
But most of the AMEX cards only have those offers that you quoted as "Introductiry offers"...that would meean that only if you haven't had an AMEX card for at least 24 months prior to you getting that card, you would get those offers. Is that not true in the US?
So my question is, if i have a life insurance policy already and i want to switch, am i able to cash out on my current life insurance policy??
My Fico has been 850 a few months now. Just *pay in full every month* as soon as it posts (don't wait for due date).
Interesting, how many years of history do you have? I pay in full several times per month - hasn't seem to have made a big difference

Finally! Something you are knowledgeable about Graham! Credit card hacking!
It's really difficult for the average person to be like you. You happen to be financially stable. Thus, a lot of the information you are giving is just for people like yourself who are wealthy as most people cannot pay off the entire balance on cards.
We are screwed
It’s hilarious he used Dave Ramsey’s picture! 😂😂😂
This video doesn’t explain to you guys that Credit cards are not for everyone and it is not that easy to just pay everything off. I like the guy but if you are already successful , to pay off cards or open up new ones, it can be easy to say it can be done and easy to do…
Does it matter how many payments you make? For example I opened a credit card, made one transaction waited until the statement was generated then paid it off in full. But haven’t made anymore transactions since. Do I need to keep using it?
How do you go about researching to find the best credit cards and their deals? Also how do you know when it’s a good deal?

I pay $50 a year for a million dollar life insurance policy yearly so I’ll skip 300 for the same thing
The person putting you as an authorized user doesn't need to have good credit, only the card they put you on needs be have been in perfecr standing from it was opened, has very low or no utilization and preferably has a high credit limit. Because only information from that card affects you.
I don’t get how credit scores work. They go down if I use credit and they go down even more if I pay off my balance the following month.
Good for you. I'm almost maxed out on my cards... because I have to eat and pay bills!
