I had Harrington rod since I was 13 years old back in 1993. I’m 42 years old now. I have had little issues with back pain or at least I have gotten used to the pain. My biggest fear is that something will go wrong with the rods. After all these years I am just now trying to learn more about scoliosis and what to expect in the future. I’m not sure what degree of curvature I had before but I believe it is currently at 33 degrees.

I had Harrington Rods in 1975 with a 62/34 curve, internal rotation and no flexibility. My ribs started to drop over my hip bone. I recovered wearing a body cast and the a turtle jacket for 6 months each. I never had back pain and went on to become a nurse. I was fused from T4-L2. I became disabled due to rupturing the remaining 4 bottom disc until it was bone to bone. I became bent forward, had trouble walking and had horrible pain. In 2015, I had the bottom fused. From the age of 33 to 63 I was on very strong pain medication. At this time I am off all meds for pain and learning to become stronger. Unfortunately I now have autoimmune disease and allergic to meds and metals. A lot isn't known about us which puts us in danger and makes it so hard to receive proper treatment. I was very lucky to have top Orthopedic Surgeons and am doing well.
I absolutely can relate to your situation, my story mimics yours...with the exceptions..i am still on pain meds (do nothing, dependant/addiction...i have an autoimmune disease and arthritis which has been exacerbated by arthritis from both the surgery and Crohn's disease. I'm not doing well at all..depression hovers over me at all times...such to the point where i have thought about assisted suicide. I am so very happy for you that you have found an Orthopedic Surgeon that is helping you..may you live a pain-free and long happy healthy life..
Unfortunately I can't speak English well. I was operated on using the Harrington method 35 years ago when I was 14. Have had severe problems for 20 years. Your report is nice, but I couldn't choose at the time. The sequela after the Harrington method is called: Flatback syndrome after scoliosis surgery according to the Harrington method. The typical tipping forward and a lot of pain is part of it. Prof. Dr La Grone in Texas knows his stuff. All the best from my heart from Germany from Tina🙏✨💖

I wish there was a choice when I was younger. I have the Harrington rod 34 years ago, not many issues except right shoulder aches and I cannot touch my toes.
I had a rod fitted 31 years ago and my spine was bent 50 degrees to the left. Mr Morley the top back surgeon at the time did my back ar Stanmore royal orthopaedic hospital.
Once harrington rods are put in, is there any way to further improve posture, such as with chiropractic care? i have had rods in my back since 1996, but feel like my posture has gotten worse with age and pregnancies. Would love to know if there is a way to improve posture other than another surgery.

I had Spinal Fusion Surgery in 1992 with Harrington Rods insertion. Im 45 years old now and am planning on getting re evaluated as I’m still tilted quite a bit.
I had the rods put in when I was 15.... at 21 my back hurt so bad I had the rods taken out.. now at 54 I have really bad pain, had steroid shots and the shots to deaden the nerves and neither helped. With all that said what is my next step to try to get some relief? Oh I've also been thru PT several times also didn't help.

I’m Male 22 I did the surgery at 18yrs old. It’s been 3 years since and the rods are my main issue. I want the rods removed. I feel pain because of the screws rubbing against my organs. I am a slim guy 6ft. What are the cons of removing the rods? I’m asking because I can’t work jobs because of my rod pain.
I understand that you're experiencing significant pain from the rods in your back and are considering having them removed. This is a crucial decision, and it's important to weigh all the potential benefits and risks carefully before proceeding. I’m 45 and had the rods removed 5 months ago. It has been very hard and I have a long way to go but I’m glad I did it. I was in so much pain. The screws were sticking out and it felt like they were getting caught on the muscle.

What caused my spine to bend was my Neurofibromatosis tumours on the end of the nerve ends.
