-it's time, after many requests and me avoiding the subject i thought it only fair after doing a quick presentation for the
International Association of Woodcarvers
/ @intlassocofwoodcarvers
on the subject of power stropping that i go ahead and make this video
just remember -you don't need it! lol
-the tools in video are from www.chippingaway.com/ - Развлечения
Doug you should have emphasized the power tools must always be moving AWAY from the edge of the tool. It's hard to see on video and in fact many times in a video the rotation will appear to be running in the opposite direction.
Best wishes for the holidays and keep them coming
Thx Peter -since I forgot I am pinning your comment for all to see 👍
This is essential advise. I can not emphasize enough the importance of follow this. I use magic markers or colored tape to put arrows on my machines to show the direction of rotation.
@@philroyer513 pretty good idea!
That was my question to ask the direction of rotation of the belt w/tool! Remember, that world is full of Bubba's that can't think. I had customer service and small talk. She didn't know who "John Wayne" was. Never heard of him! Seriously? Sammy Davis Jr. Nope! We're is our world going?
Great little tool as I repurposed an old belt and added jewelers rouge. Thanks for sharing!
Doug, you really should have been a teacher. You explain things so perfectly, and in such a humble way.
As a child I would go out to my Grandad's workshop in the barn and watch him sharpening his tools. I found it absolutely mesmerizing! A lovely memory. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your lovely bride and your family and friends and any livestock what happened to be wandering around in the house or yard! Stay healthy everybody!
Indeed Doug you should have become a teacher. I love watching your videos and learning so much from them. thank you for sharing everything with us
Another valuable, instructional, video from a wonderful, humble gentleman. My late husband taught woodworking; he would have loved your videos. Have a blessed Christmas. Greetings from California.🎄
Merry Christmas to you Janet! And may your New Year be blessed!
🐧🎄❄⛄🦌⛄❄🎄🐧
you always have the best ways of doing the carving thing Doug . I appreciate all the tips and tricks you share , keep em coming .
Great how-to for those that didn’t grow up around this type of stuff! Tool maintenance is half the fun for me. Awesome stuff Doug!
You are a very special man, you’re helping me through some rough times can’t thank you enough!
I have to thank you so much for your videos. I have recently discovered them. I enjoy them and learn new things every time I watch. Thank you for sharing this hobby, your skills, techniques and insights!
Thank you for your honesty Doug that's why I like learning from you 👍
Thank you Doug for sharing, it’s keeping my tools razor sharp that I’m struggling, this demo really help, I’m a fan. Thanks again.
Really appreciate your holistic stand point which supports the original craft with basic tool, soul brother...
Thanks for showing us how to keep the tools sharp Doug. 👍😁
Found you from recommendations on a Facebook Whittling page. Over and over, beginners like me ask for good instruction, and your name is always one of the first mentioned, Doug.
Thank you for being such a great teacher; that is a gift.
And thank you for your constant reminders and reassurances, like in the beginning of this video, that one doesn't "need" lots of complicated, expensive equipment. But it sure can be fun! Lol

Merry Christmas Dougie, thankyou for another year of great content!
Thanks Doug for a year of films,Happy holidays to you and yours Merry Christmas
Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm. You got me back into carving. I wish I could send some pictures so you could see what you have inspired.
🎄Merry Christmas and happy prosperous New Year Doug and his family!
I thought for a second that you were shredding some bills. Very informative video. I have had issues sharpening my carving tools. I will try what you have shown. Thanks again Doug. Stay safe.
Thanks Doug for the video. I wish you had done it a few years ago. I spend so much time and $$ finding the easiest and fasted method to keep my tools sharp, and after years of research and expenses, I ended-up with the EXACT same setup you have here. As a bonus, I can also sharpen all my woodworking tools with it, and even the kitchen knifes! :-) Great video and advice.
Thanks for all the tips Doug
Thanks for another great video Doug !!! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family !!!
Thanks Doug I have a similar setup. Always good to know I am doing things correctly. Have a merry Christmas
Glad to see Peter Hyde's comment. Safety first is essential ! Merry Christmas to all and to all safe carving!
That is a cool little hatchet! Interesting video as always doug
Great helpful advice in this video, merry Christmas to you and your family Doug
Doug, I have struggled for decades getting my tools sharp. I have used a variety of stones, jigs, sand paper, never quite happy with the results. Even ruined the profile of my Gerber EZ Out. Wasn't untill I viewed your 'Make a strop, use a strop' video that I started to get really good results. My wife knows to be carefull handling my knives now (of course she grabs one of mine first for the kitchen)! Great info!
Thanks for the demo. I've been curious about using power to maintain.
Doug thank you for being open about owning such tools. Great informative video knowing you don't 'stone' your knives helps me out, never could get it right with a stone. Stopping seems to do well for me. Merry Christmas To you and your family.
👍👍 Merry Christmas Doug and family 🎄. God bless y’all 🙏✌️
Thank you. Sharpening knives is soothing for me, can't explain it. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Catch you on the next one.
Nice video Doug 👍always full of handy tips 👍
Best part of the video. "These tools have never seen a stone." (!) Me with $300 worth of stones.
I'm just getting into carving. As a carpenter, now retired, all I sharpened were flat stuff, now I have a few gouges. Really like that the 'strop' moves and not the blade.
Thanks again Doug, good information. I bought a 1/30 belt sander from H F and the leather belts from Amazon. Works great.
Great. Your carving tools are really sharp. I took them a lot from your video👍👍
Thx Doug. Been waiting for that vid for a long time.
I've been buffing my blades for years. It's incredible how sharp they are. The bonus is the smooth finish provided when compared to a blade sharpened on a stone. (A mirror finish)
It's quite easy, and it takes just a few seconds to complete the task.
Thanks for showing your sharpening techniques. They have the same polisher. I polish the blades on hard felt wheels with a shank on a drill covered with green paste.
I've been watching your channel for a long time.
Greetings from Poland
Adam
I love my 1x30 sharpening belt system, finishes up with a 12k and then a strop. I also have a polishing wheel on my bench grinder with gold polish. It is great for all knives and jewelry.
Awesome tutorial. Yes revisiting the 1x1 dowels would be wonderful! Thank you
Great video Doug! 🤩🤩👍👍👍💯💯💯
I made a strop after your video on them. Since then I bought one, each works great. While a bunch of the family is talking I sharpen. 😂
..great video Doug ....always quality information ....not much of a tool salesman ,, but amazing craftsman ....sharp as a hand honed and stropped knife ..... ..
.....Merry Christmas .....
Thanks for the demo on how to do this.
Thank you , Mr Doug .
Great video Doug! I got the Harbor Freight sander and adapted it like Gene Messer showed. Works great!
Thanks Doug 👍
Glad I found this video. My power strop sane as yours acts very different. Mine bogs down almost to a stop
Thanks Doug, I've been looking forward to this video. I have the power strop but ruined the first knife I tried and often find the knife feels dull after power strop. I will have to try your technique of holding the knife with the hand behind the strop.
Merry Christmas to you & your family
Thanks Doug. You make it look TOO easy! Think I'll try to recover what's left of my old Flexcut on the power strop, using your approach (after Christmas!) Best wishes for the Holidays.
Flexcut can be sent to the factory and they will make it sharp. I don’t know if they charge.
Soooo satisfying!,
Nice work!!!🔥🔥👍🏻
Hi Doug how are you? happy holidays hope you and the Family are doing well.. Big Fan I Love to see your carvings. Stay Safe Regards Billy..
Thanks for this video, very helpful . Was curious to see what you do with the power honer and to see if I was getting the maximum function from it. Looks like I am!!
Thank you Doug for another unselfish video . In your description you mention the company “ chipping away “ & I too would like to say to all your carving fans out there that they will never get better down home honest service than they will receive from chipping away. They are chalk full of integrity. Just try them out & you will know what I mean. Thanks again Doug.
Bonjour Doug
Merci, tank you, muchas gracias, danke shöne ....etc
Tu nous fais un petit film avec tes copains?
Salut ! 🇫🇷 Toulouse
Love ya Doug! 😁 ✌️
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Hey Doug 👋 at you, from across the pond.
Thanks for the video. MERRY CHRISTMAS. God Bless, stay safe.
Thanks!
Thanks Doug. Very informative video. If you could choose only one of the two (power sharpener/leather belt, or power strop/maple wheel), which would you purchase?
That's sharp!
For those new to power buffing/polishing, small blade tools can get very hot when you are buffing them. Let cool or dip in water before handling the blade.
Great video Doug! How often do you repeat this when working on a carving project? And is just a few swipes really that is all that is needed? Thanks.
👍👋 Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas to you all in Canada
Great video as usual,Merry Christmas everyone.Besides online where do I find carving knives?I live in Moncton NB,and all the hardware stores dont have any wood carving tools.Looking for ideas.
thanks Pard
I have buffing wheels on my grinder, and use it to keep my tools sharp, including my ice chisel.
Awww I just bought a set of cheep gouges Schaaf for wood carving that desperately needs sharpening before use , and I just happen to have a 1x30 belt sander with a leather belt!
How long have you been carving, you do excellent work.
Wow! Instant subscription. That was exactly what I needed to know. I'm just getting into woodcarving and I'm not familiar with how to sharpen wood tools.
(As a jeweler, I'm familiar with buffing and polishing wheels & compounds, but not with sharpening & polishing gouges, veiners, etc.)
I have a question - did you make the maple wheel yourself?
Bought it from chipping away.com
You are right, quiet time is better.
Mate that is what I call PROPER JOB.
Sharp is not the word.
Better than a LIGHT SABRE..
I think Power stropping is the method of choice for woodturing chisels, which accumulate much more wear than any hand tool.
Hey Doug, at 1:04 you have a ghost looking at us from inside your glasses. Lol 😂
Doug, have considered turning the buffing wheel around. That way the wheels would be going away from you. You will have to reach behind the mottor to turn it on.
Why is the underside of the buffing wheel being used instead of the upside? (I mean the last polishing on the green buffer) Thanks
Doug what type of Beeswax are you using on your carvings? The bears for example. Thanks
To make sure.... the leather belt was moving opposite of the blade edge? if so my belt grinder must run opposite of that one.
You can see at the 3:00 mark the belt is moving away from the edge not into it. I was wondering the same thing at first.
I believe that if the leather strap rotated against the edge of the blade, many knife sharpeners would quickly turn to the stamp collection or Gregorian chant. 🤭
Also bench grinders tend to run opposite of belt sanders so bear that in mind.
What speed should your leather strop run.
Great stuff as always Doug. So, are those blades sharp enough to shave your beard with??. 😁
Great demo except neglecting to mention the direction of the wheels when offering the blades up to them ... obvious I know but someone will get it wrong.... take care...All the best.....Andy
Doug, where do you get the 1” wide leather band for the strip sander?
I get mine from Amazon.
Brilliant! On the contoured maple wheels, is it leather that is glued on the wheels?
no just compound straight on the wood
Yup... power is kewl. I use the Ken Onion Work Sharp with the tool attachment and have the honing/stropping belts for it. Wonderful tool maintenance equipment. Leather stropping boards for in use touch ups. Life it good !
Now, go show young Joseph how to use a SHARP hatchet, and beat him about his head for using his cutting edge to strike his ferro rod. Show that boy how to put a GOOD 90 degree angle on his axe head for such abusive work.
I bought a flexpcut carving tool set, it's a set of 4 palm tools.
I think they are the smallest carving set they have.
Thinking I could sharpen them, I believe I screwed up the bevel of the tools.
Is there a way I can get that back, I'm sure there is.
I just dont know how.
You have any idea?
I believe I know the answer but with the other sharpening instruction yesterday, I wish to clear up confusion. I believe that the belt on the 1 by 30 sharpener has the smooth side to the tool. But yesterday the strops shown all mentioned keeping the rough side to the tool. You mentioned the importance of the belt direction and tool orientation but what side of the belt should be to the tool?
Right -smooth side out on the powered machine
Excellent thank you. Hope you don't mind a couple of questions: Did you make the profile discs yourself? What direction was the 1 x 30 running (i.e. towards or away from the cutting edge)? Thanks
Towards me down -both machines are as sold by chippingaway-i did not make any part
Thanks
Hey Doug, I am enjoying all your videos, thank you! I have a question that perhaps you'd covered already, and that is; which side of the belt is used in the power honing? Smooth or rough?
Smooth
👌👍
@DougLinker
How do you apply compound so evenly to the belt power strop, have any tips ?
I have uneven compound, I can’t seem to fill the belt properly.
Hi Doug, I didn't read through all the comments below but, your small hatchet, what brand is it and the size. I have been looking for one to help with spoon carving. Thank You
Jan
Where did you get your buffing wheels at?
neat
pozdrawiam z Katowic
Hi Doug. Would the buffing wheel be enough or do I have to use the leather belt as well?
Just the wheel alone will round your edges
Nice video, Doug.
You need sharp tools for carving.
A question, how is the leather strap held together? Is it clamped (similar to the clamps with which paper is stapled) or is the leather strap sewn together?
Glued scarf joint -basically a long compound angle
Hello Doug
Thanks for the answer.
