Hey! Just wanted to say that I just stumbled upon this channel and I already love it. The professional level of your videos, the dialog while showing the mini, even including the art from WotC and the transparency of your pulls...idk, just a great work. Also this video kinda made me want even more to order this booster soon!
That's fantastic! I'm so glad to hear it. I'm hoping that people can watch the videos and get some story inspirations from these little bits of plastic. Let me know how it goes!
12:59 - Man that "Human" paladin has a weird skin tone... like coppery red! It seriously looks more closely to what the skin tone of Icons of the Realms Hobgoblins is. :D Maybe he is a reformed Hobgoblin Paladin. :P
We actually noticed upon adding the SCAG cover art into the video that they may have based the mini *too closely* on that art because in the painting, the fiery sword in the background casts a red glow on all the characters. It seems they just grabbed the skin tone from the cover art without adjusting for the lighting effect, resulting in the weird color.
@@TheGallantGoblin Ah that explains it! Maybe something similar happened with the MM1 Vampire and that's why his face is purple. :) I liked your idea for a tiefling paladin - I too would like if 5E went back to the older definition of tieflings when they had one-two fiendish trait, not all the race had the same look.
Man, i loved that you put the pics of the minis inte the books! Great work as always! A sugestion, correct if i'm wrong, but not all the sets have huge minis, i think it's worth mention when they have, like this one
Gamarishi Yes! That’s very important. I thought I had recorded a line about it, but either I forgot or it got lost in the editing. Thanks for mentioning it! Definitely one of the most important details about this set!

I also love the information to each mini in the voice over. In general gratulations to your channel. The quality is awesome. You deserve at least two zeros more at the end of your aubscriber figure. Please keep doing what you‘re doing.
Otto is so big because he is encountered in a magical miniature castle that shrinks down anyone who comes near it to 1/10th the size - except him and the wizard's Homunculus. So basically, he isn't large... your players are tiny compared to him. :D
Hehe, indeed. I left that part out because I thought it was a nice surprise for the players. I'm always worried players will watch these videos and then have nice surprises spoiled for them, so I try to be fairly judicious in what I say. Though, I probably need to err on the side of providing more information to GMs. The only problem with Otto is that that makes the mini a little harder to reuse. But there are other, smaller, faerie dragon minis out there.
@@TheGallantGoblin Oh I see! Sure that makes sense. :) I do like that Otto looks the same as the MM1 tiny Faerie Dragons, just upscaled - and violet in color since he is a "Great Wyrm" age-wise. Now makes me wish that MM1 had variant minis already, they could have made different colored Faerie Dragons to represent the various age categories.
21:06 - Dezmyr and Zalthar are a bit tougher than regular Death Knight, btw. Zalthar uses a 9 Lives Stealer sword that can trap souls, and Dezmyr can turn back time momentarily, so she can undo 20 points of damage to herself or allies each round.
Thanks for the feedback. All good points! Sorry for ignoring your comment here and on the paladin--RUclips flagged those two comments as possible spam and we don't usually have issues with that so didn't notice it had happened until now!
Ah, with NPCs like that my aim to say that they use the "modified" stat block of whatever-it-is, but it seems I dropped the word "modified" from that particular description. Thanks for picking up on it! I'm going to tend to shy away from giving out the abilities of the specific NPC characters and focus instead on just describing the generic monsters that the minis can be used for. I figure if you're playing the Mad Mage adventure already, you'll know what the NPCs can do, but if you're watching this video without knowing the adventure, you may be more interested in knowing what you can use this mini for outside of the specific adventure if it resembles a creature with a statblock. Hence the generic description of a death knight that can be slotted anywhere. Hopefully that makes sense. They certainly do have interesting abilities though!
Bought my 1st Booster Box. Was hoping for Remoraz/Bahir/Froghemoth but pulled Goristro, grave cleric, invisible paladin of oath vengence, and human storm sorcerer. Really surprised with the detail on the grave cleric.
This video is very helpful! I have recently started running a dungeon of the mad mage, and just ordered my own brick of these minis. However, It is really frustrating that some of the minis featured in this set are not featured in the actual book... hoping I don't get any more repeats XD (The second box I bought was a repeat of the first...) Anyway! Thanks for the video!
Hey thanks. Yeah, they had a habit of filling in holes of other adventures sometimes in these sets. Mad Mage added Grungs to fill out Tomb of Annihilation, for example. It seems like they're getting away from this lately though. Descent Into Avernus really focused down on devils and demons and fiends. Hope you get what you're looking for! Check the after-market for any singles you may want! -Theo
I actually love grungs, want to play a grung paladin oath of conquest because of some of the higher level fear mechanics and how funny that would be, also they just have an air of superiority about them in their own culture so I like the idea of a gold grung "raised" (they mature in a year) by a wizard who just believes that the entire world would be better off if he was in charge of it
I can already see that the Shadow and Grungs are the most highly sought after Commons - their prices is steadily around 5$ at most webshops. Btw I think the Shadow was in the Monster Manual as well, or by Basic Rules you mean the 3 core books (Player's Guide, DM's Guide, Monster Manual)? Flumphs are adorable and one of the pretty few Lawful Good aberrations. I waited ages for them to get a mini. LOL I did not notice they messed up Muiral's name. Guess he can be glad it wasn't altered to Muriel, like Courage the Cowardly Dog's owner. :) I love Otto, he looks amazing, the translucent 'windows' on the wing are great. I am guessing the whole wing is translucent and painted over? I do wish they sculpted him smiling, though... Faerie Dragons should look cheerful and mischievous. The Shadowdusks look great, I see you can see the skeletal face and yellow glowing eyes under the helm. They even reproduced their insignia of an upside down torch and sparks on the shields. They certainly have a more evil look than the Rage of Demons Death Knight. And Dezmyr is likely the very first female Death Knight mini. The previous (Legendary Evils) Remorhaz was better painted IMHO. I do wish they used different shades of blue on the fins or the belly... he is too monochrome. But I like that it is not burrowed. The Death Tyrant is pretty clever. I originally expected them to do the red orbs with a translucent connector for each, but this is better. Hope I get 3 Flinds too, I usually don't keep duplicates but I want all of them for my Gnoll army. Now gives us some female Gnolls next, Wizkids! Or a Flind with a flindbar. (btw is that the way to pronounce them? I always thought it was fly-nd...but I never heard anyone say the word before.) The Zombie Beholder is already super expensive (20$) at the secondary market, and I expect that to rise as supply runs out. With an easy markup with a pen or paintbrush to add pupils, people can turn it into a living one, and it is currently the cheapest way to get a prepainted Beholder when all previous ones cost 50-70$-
While I love the thugs personally, I'm glad to hear the shadows and grungs are doing well. The shadow is perhaps one of the most creative minis I've seen in a long time. The the grungs are just cute and I want a million of them. By "The Basic Rules" I mean the free set of rules that are available on the wizards website here: media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/DnD_BasicRules_2018.pdf Though I'm not actually seeing the shadow on there. I'll have to double check in the future. DnDBeyond may be wrong on the source on that one. Oof I've packed up the set now so I'll have to go back and look at Otto again soon to see! Good eye! Yeah, I think the Shadowdusks are very well done. It's great to have special minis for those important villains that the players have to face. And it's nice when they go out of the way to make them look special when they could just throw a suit of armor out there. Yeah, the color choice on the Remorhaz makes him look like he's made of candy. I would have appreciated something that really looked more like a natural carapace. Oh nice. Good luck with the gnoll warband. There are certainly a lot of gnoll minis out there to choose from. And yes, DnDBeyond has an official pronunciation guide for the monsters as done by Matt Mercer and Marisha Ray. Good point about the beholder. I feel like it's a bit smaller than some of the other ones, but the forum on minisgallery has a good comparison picture. Once we round out our collection we'll start doing comparison videos of our own for various monsters. The Beholder one will be particularly interesting I think. I do need to paint my Nolzur's one first. That's an intimidating task.
Entropy, I don't particularly want to endorse any stores, but some well known options in America are Miniature Market, Troll and Toad, Coolstuffinc, Amazon, Reaper, and many local game stores will ship to you as well.
1:20 - I think the wizkids people likely did not get what a longsword is like... that sword he/she is holding (is the Common Veteran a woman, btw? Long haired head...) is so huge and the handle clearly has space to grab it with two hands, that it is at best a bastard sword, I feel. Dual wielding one of those would need quite the strength! :D
Yeah, agreed. That's a giant sword. I think she is intended to be female. I actually think that mini has the worst sculpt in the set. I'm not sure if you can tell in the video, but she has a really abnormally long neck. It's rather distracting.
@@TheGallantGoblin Yes I saw! It's more noticeable on the Veteran Leader as he has no hair to cover it. Are all of the copies you got like this? I guess we could try and break off the neck, cut off a piece and re-glue. The changed heads worked well on the City Guards in WDH and on the Berserkers here as the body is fairly generic looking and the body has baggy clothes or a bulky plate that would hide the real shape of the torso. But on the Veterans they have pretty thick limbs and form-fitting armor so they look distinctly male. I guess I'll just pretend the common Veteran is a long-haired guy as he looks weird as a woman... I guess he also likes tiaras? :D
I dug them out and took a closer look. It really varies by the mini. It's definitely an issue with both the regular Veteran and the Veteran Leader. Some of them have really long necks, some have no necks at all, and some are Goldilocks-Just-Right. I don't quite have the capacity at the moment to fix them... I guess I'll just save the longest necked one when I want to subtly hint to the players that they have a no-intelligence doppelganger in their midst. I posted comparison pics on Instagram.
@@TheGallantGoblin As the head is replaceable, they likely printed it with a longer neck "prong" to attach it to, and the factory workers probably did as well as they could. LOL that doppleganger idea is great. :)
Thanks! There were quite a lot of invisible options in this set. We tried to list all the ones we knew about at the very end of the video. You only get 2 invisibles in a case though, so we didn't have them all to show.
@@TheGallantGoblin Rolled a nat 20 on this brick ;-) Otto, Murial, Scaladar, Got Halister as the invisible. Thx again, your video pushed me over the edge to purchase.
4:16 - Btw curious, did you compare the Intellect Devourer to the SKT one? Is it basically the same mold/pose? I know why they released it again, this adventure is full of them, but the SKT one is already worth almost nothing and this one will be worth even less. Weird idea to remake it by Wizkids when they can be found for like 0.25$ online...
Sorry for the delay on this one. We're getting ready to move so most of the minis are securely packed now. I dug out the SKT intellect devourer to compare. It's actually bigger than the Mad Mage one. It's not quite the same mold, though of course, very similar. The SKT one is better in my opinion. At least it's large enough to see that it's a brain on legs without having to put your head on the table to get close enough to see. It's as if they chose it without knowing that they had released one not that long ago. In isolation the choice makes sense, but not in context of their recent releases. I'll post a comparison picture on Instagram, though it's a bugger to get a decent shot of these little guys when most of my equipment is packed up.
I agree, we deffinitely need new, updated aboleths, they are currently looking poorly painted and modelled compared to current releases. They are very expensive because of rarity too :(
That's a pretty good pull. Generally the invisibles aren't worth very much, but the invisible Halaster seems to be the most popular one in the set, not surprisingly. They're considered "Very Rare" for what it's worth. The invisible Halaster is priced at $27 over at CoolStuffInc. The invisible Kerestra is $11. So not too shabby. Lots of invisibles end up being basically worthless as the demand just isn't there. But invisible Halaster in particular should remain quite popular.
Unfortunately minis become harder to get the older they are. Even some of the oldest Pathfinder Battles and Icons of the Realms releases are extremely hard to get full sets and we don't want to release incomplete showcase videos. For example, Elemental Evil cases seem impossible to find and the Huge minis for Rise of the Runelords are either out of stock or prohibitively expensive on resale markets. Sets predating D&D 5e are basically impossible to collect for any reasonable amount of money :( -Grady
Indeed! There are lots of really cool ones in the older sets and we're always happy to get suggestions for content. If we ever win the lottery, we'll work on it! :D
Hi Gerb, we have not repainted any of the WizKids minis and we aim to show the minis as they arrive so that people know what they're buying. The only time we do anything to the ones we show in the videos is if they arrive broken we will try to glue the pieces back together, but we usually comment on roughly how many arrived broken or if there was notable damage in a set. That said, good lighting usually does a lot to sell how good something looks and we do film these under photography lights. On the flip side, many of these minis were not designed for close scrutiny so sometimes filming them up close in HD is not flattering to them even though they'd look fine on the table.
Haha indeed. We have child safety gates to block our cats from going where they shouldn't but they'd probably respect those a lot less if they had wings. -Grady
There is not a set named for Curse of Strahd, but Monster Menagerie (the original) came out around the same time as the adventure and has a lot of minis for that adventure. We unofficially consider it the Strahd set. Notable figures in MM1 include the Strahd zombie, wolf, werewolf, vampire, swarm of bats, Ezmerelda, and Strahd himself. There's also undead like the ghost, mummy, and skeleton. -Grady
Yes, this set had quite a few invisible variants. There’s a list of the known invisibles at the very end of the video. They seem to have stopped including them in more recent sets. -Theo
They actually do not. Shortly after this release, the sets started becoming more cohesive, but at the time of this booster set, the contents were a mix of generic playable character minis, monsters to support previous adventures that weren't included in those sets, and monsters supporting the adventure named on the box. The grung, for example, support Tomb of Annihilation and do not, to my knowledge, show up in Dungeon of the Mad Mage. The bheur hag doesn't really show up in any published adventure but WizKids has been putting one type of hag in each release. But a number of other creatures like the zombie beholder and the revenant and all the named characters (Kerestra, Trobriand, Halaster, the Shadowdusks) are from Dungeon of the Mad Mage.
I haven't seen any options to buy them as a full set, though you could see if someone put together something like that on eBay perhaps. Otherwise, you can buy the ones you want individually at online retailers like Miniature Market or CoolstuffInc. You can also check your friendly local game store, as they often have singles available for purchase. -Theo
This is 32 boxes being opened correct? and you didn't get all 44 plus the invisibles? Im trying to decide if its even really worth buying several of these to run the adventure. I really don't want to get a pile of unnecessary bandits or thugs. If I buy 8 packs which should be 32 minis.. what are the chances i'm going to get duplicates? Knowing you purchased 4 times more than I have and you didn't get everyone of the minis.. seems as usual these packs are going to cost way to much to have the coveted minis.
We cover a lot of that in our FAQ www.gallantgoblin.com/post/wizkids-minis-booster-sets-demystified But long story short we did get all 44 prepainted minis. We only get 2 of the invisibles though. Not sure which of the 44 you think we're missing. We also show exactly what we got in each box at the end. You have to be careful how you buy the boxes. They come in set packages of either 1) 1 booster box, 2) a brick which is 8 booster boxes plastic wrapped together, or 3) a case which is 4 bricks in a sealed cardboard box. If you buy 32 random booster boxes, there are no guarantees what you get. If you buy a case, you're supposed to get at least one of each prepainted mini. If you buy a brick, you're guaranteed to get 3 of the 12 unique rares (1 will be large or huge and 2 will be medium or small), 7-8 unique larges/huges (there's always one large/huge in each box and a brick usually has no duplicates, though in rare instances you may get 1 duplicate). There is typically 1 invisible in every OTHER brick, which is why a case will give you 2. In our experience, we typically get 3 duplicates in a brick, so you can expect roughly 29 uniques and 3 repeats from a BRICK. Again this is not guaranteed if you just buy 8 random booster boxes off Amazon that aren't shrink wrapped together.
@@TheGallantGoblin Thank you for the reply. I was sure I counted and saw 42 of 44 but, hey if you got them all. Atleast thats something. Your break down here is really helpful. I think purchasing the brick is the way I will go. maybe two.. but, seems I can do pretty well by getting them this way. Thank you for responding.

WAIT YOU CAN TAKE OF THE DAGGERS FROM HALASTER !
Awesome it felt weird on the mini
Cool huh? -Theo
23:30 Clearly Halister is actually Vergil from Devil May Cry and he's using summon swords.
See, that makes so much sense. ;-) -Theo
So, this is exactly what I needed. Exactly. Subscribing. Thanks!
Glad to have you aboard! Welcome! -Theo
Your videos are awesome. I've been watching Community, and I like to imagine that you're Dean Pelton's brother.
Ha! I love it! Now we just need to get Jim Rash to cameo on our channel.
Great video!!
Your shirt is my wallpaper XD . Shout out to ABD Illustrates.
ABD Illustrates does amazing work!
There's also an invisible Halaster as well.
Thanks! There were quite a lot of invisible options in this set. We tried to list all the ones we knew about at the very end of the video. You only get 2 invisibles in a case though, so we didn't have them all to show.
good video, love the Critical Role Mighty Nein shirt
Thank you very kindly! -Theo
6:50 Sherlock Gnomes?
Bought a brick today. Can't believe my luck, pulled: Froghemoth, Behir, Zombie Beholder, Remoraz out of 1st 4 boxes. So far no invis minis :D
Hey that's excellent! Hope the rest of the brick was just as good! -Theo
@@TheGallantGoblin Rolled a nat 20 on this brick ;-) Otto, Murial, Scaladar, Got Halister as the invisible. Thx again, your video pushed me over the edge to purchase.
I'm certainly glad it turned out good for you!! Congrats! -Theo
@@TheGallantGoblin Interesting! So it is not a simple reprint. Thanks for the info!
I agree, we deffinitely need new, updated aboleths, they are currently looking poorly painted and modelled compared to current releases. They are very expensive because of rarity too :(
I've got an invisible Halaster and an invisible Kerestra. What's their rarity? Are they sellable?
That's a pretty good pull. Generally the invisibles aren't worth very much, but the invisible Halaster seems to be the most popular one in the set, not surprisingly. They're considered "Very Rare" for what it's worth. The invisible Halaster is priced at $27 over at CoolStuffInc. The invisible Kerestra is $11. So not too shabby. Lots of invisibles end up being basically worthless as the demand just isn't there. But invisible Halaster in particular should remain quite popular.
I’m pretty sure the grungs do show up in the adventure if I’m not mistaken?
We couldn’t find a reference to them but we do make mistakes! -Grady
Thanks this really helped
Think it is one of the best dd set
Definitely seems to be a popular one. -Theo
I got an invisible tanarukk !
Oh nice! -Theo
Do a vid like this for every set ever made all the way back to.ral partha minis my first mini was from.ral partha in 1977
Unfortunately minis become harder to get the older they are.
@@TheGallantGoblin I know I'm sorry but it would still be cool.I got a few old rare ones in the stash myself lol
Indeed! There are lots of really cool ones in the older sets and we're always happy to get suggestions for content. If we ever win the lottery, we'll work on it! :D
Wow, did you repaint these? The colors look great, maybe its the awesome lighting?
Hi Gerb, we have not repainted any of the WizKids minis and we aim to show the minis as they arrive so that people know what they're buying. The only time we do anything to the ones we show in the videos is if they arrive broken we will try to glue the pieces back together, but we usually comment on roughly how many arrived broken or if there was notable damage in a set. That said, good lighting usually does a lot to sell how good something looks and we do film these under photography lights. On the flip side, many of these minis were not designed for close scrutiny so sometimes filming them up close in HD is not flattering to them even though they'd look fine on the table.
the cat knocks over enough stuff without flying though... ;)
Haha indeed. We have child safety gates to block our cats from going where they shouldn't but they'd probably respect those a lot less if they had wings. -Grady
Was there a set made for curse of strahd?
There is not a set named for Curse of Strahd, but Monster Menagerie (the original) came out around the same time as the adventure and has a lot of minis for that adventure. We unofficially consider it the Strahd set. Notable figures in MM1 include the Strahd zombie, wolf, werewolf, vampire, swarm of bats, Ezmerelda, and Strahd himself. There's also undead like the ghost, mummy, and skeleton. -Grady
I got an invisible Tiefling Battlemaster, how's this possible? Just bought a box few days ago and found out by watching this video.
Yes, this set had quite a few invisible variants. There’s a list of the known invisibles at the very end of the video. They seem to have stopped including them in more recent sets. -Theo
It's not said, but all of those monsters appear on Dungeon of the Mad Mage?
@@TheGallantGoblin I see. Thank you for the great explanation!
where can i get all these minis as a set instead of a mystery? :
I haven't seen any options to buy them as a full set, though you could see if someone put together something like that on eBay perhaps. Otherwise, you can buy the ones you want individually at online retailers like Miniature Market or CoolstuffInc. You can also check your friendly local game store, as they often have singles available for purchase. -Theo
May we expect a showcase of Tomb of Annihilation at one point? 😃
Yes instagram.com/p/BsbwN5wgo46/ (don’t look at the time stamp lol)
This is 32 boxes being opened correct? and you didn't get all 44 plus the invisibles? Im trying to decide if its even really worth buying several of these to run the adventure. I really don't want to get a pile of unnecessary bandits or thugs. If I buy 8 packs which should be 32 minis.. what are the chances i'm going to get duplicates? Knowing you purchased 4 times more than I have and you didn't get everyone of the minis.. seems as usual these packs are going to cost way to much to have the coveted minis.
We cover a lot of that in our FAQ www.gallantgoblin.com/post/wizkids-minis-booster-sets-demystified
But long story short we did get all 44 prepainted minis.
This is like my 20 th view lol I.might get mad mage board game used on e bay
