This is really good, I haven't seen a better collection of reviews for mini's. Rage of Demons is probably the best set of WizKids.
Thanks, Nick! I appreciate the vote of confidence.
Love the minis from this set. I have found so many uses for them. Great to see another imformative unboxing review
Thanks, Georgie! Glad you enjoyed it!
Where would I pick these up? I tbh just want the dracolich, but dang..19-$30 is a lot.
These are best dnd mini figure vids on youtube because you can hear audio see mini clear and rotating.plus very useful and very interesting info about each one.making this formula best in.My opinion
Thank you very much! Glad you are enjoying the format and these reviews! -Grady
Was on the fence about buying a brick, this pushed me over the edge lol great review and so informative!
Thank you, Cory!
Just wanted to say that I buy a large number of these and I always come to your videos to see what I’m in for, keep them up, thanks man!!
Thank you! Glad we can help!
*has Demogorgon on the box art*
But no demogorgon. Amazing set neitherless! Thank you for this video
True true. The Classic Creatures set has a really sad and pathetic Demogorgon, but these days if you want an imposing one, you may want to check out Gale Force Nine's unpainted Collector's Series mini. I haven't gotten it myself, but it looks pretty impressive. Although it's pricey (~$90). -Theo
@@TheGallantGoblin I own the model in question from Gale Force Nine, it's an impressive sculpture, but wouldn't recommend it for using as a miniature on a ttrpg mat. The size of the base fills a 6in x 6in grid space, the same size as a colossal size creature in 3.5.
Gale Force Nine does have Baphomet and Yeenoghu as well and they actually fill a 3in x 3in grid like huge creatures should.
My only 2 negatives I give are:
1.) That Gale Force Nine products are way to expensive for what you get. You're paying on average $10 to $40 for a medium creature or set of medium creature, $25 to $40 for a large creature, $50 for a huge, and +$50 for anything larger than huge. You can get more figures and already painted ones from other box sets and at a cheaper price.
2.) That their plaster figures are ungodly brittle; especially the medium or large figures, any small amount of force will snap the plaster like a twig. I've had 4 Gale force Nine figures and 3 of them were obliterated by a stray flying die, getting bumped by another figure, or just looking at it wrong.
If you do want a Gale Force Nine Figure, i'd highly recommend their huge figures since they have the least likely chance of getting obliterated. I'd also recommend after assembling them but before painting them to create a mold from them so you can make metal castings of them.
Thanks for all that! I’ve also not had the best luck with the few GF9 figures I’ve had over the years. I may revisit them at some point with those ideas in mind. I do tend to prefer Wizkids minis overall. Thanks! -Theo
I absolutely adore D&D minis! I wish I could play D&D!
Why can't you play d&d?
I really appreciate your content.
Thank you! We appreciate you sharing your thoughts and being part of our community!
Another great review! And thanks for mentioning the fact that this is the only set so far where buying a case will not get you all minis. I lucked out by getting the Beholder in my case, and then buying 3 boosters and getting not only ANOTHER Beholder (which I traded for 60$ value of rare minis) but the missing Spectator and Nalfeshnee too. But to this day, I am still missing the Grell from this set. Otherwise, this was one of the best sets so far, only 2 minis I did not care for (the 4E-related "Archons" aka the Elemental Myrmidons). It has a great assortment of Rares, albeit a few of them with paint jobs you are wondering why it is worth a Rare slot (Elf Ranger, Bugbear Fighter). And I never understood why they did a Gold Dragon again, right after Tyranny of Dragons having one. Interestingly, this one is made of clear plastic painted over - it gives a nice effect when held up against the light.
Btw, aren't Quasits still available as familiars for Chaotic Evil people? That used to be the case in older editions. I bet this mini is useful for all those people playing evil wizards.
Thank you kindly! Yeah, I'm very glad they got away from sets in which you couldn't get at least one of each mini in a case. That was ridiculous, especially when some of the rares were, as you say, a fairly standard bugbear and a generic elf ranger. At some point we're going to do videos comparing all the various minis of a particular type, so all the beholders and all the dragons, etc. Should be interesting to see how they developed over time, and we'll get those gold dragons next to each other to compare. Ah, yes, good call. Warlocks who choose Pact of the Chain can turn their familiar into a quasit form. I'll add that to the video description. Thank you! Very helpful!
@@TheGallantGoblin I wonder if it was Wizkids just making too many sculpts for the set by accident, and some bigwig told them to include it all without changing the set distribution. Then again, since then 3 sets have had only 7 Large Uncommons (Monster Menagerie 2, Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica and Kingmaker) - so they oddly still change the distribution here and there.
I can't wait for comparison videos! I only started collecting pre-painted minis in 2008 or so, and I missed out on a lot of the early sets, I am getting what I want from those via trades mostly (buying a case of Icons of the Realms and trading the surplus for old Rares). And for many of the first sets, there are barely any good reviews of photos online, apart from tiny official pics from 2003. :D So they would benefit greatly by having your great quality 360 degree view showcase.
I meant more in the old 2E-3E D&D style of familiars, where you could summon a familiar befitting your alignment. Lawful Evil Wizards could get Imps, Chaotic Evil ones Quasits, Chaotic Good can get Faerie Dragons, Neutral/Lawful Good can get Pseudodragons... Though the latter not being outsiders, they would rather be needed to be sought out and convinced to be your familiar. :)
I agree the brick selections were strange. I bought 3 sealed bricks that somehow showed up 2 weeks ago at my local game shop and they only charged me the original $99, and I got not one, but TWO Beholders (regular not shadow). I got crazy amount sof some uncommons, 5 orc Paladins for eexample, and not one Kua Toa Archpriest! No Grell ( I seriously have never heard of anyone even opening a Grell from this set!) I also got only one common Dretch and one of the common Hobgoblins, yet got 3 and 4 of Uncommons like Air Myrmadons. I am about to run a Drow heavy campaign, so the 4 freaking Drow Archmages and 5 Drow Scouts I got are pretty clutch, oh yeah as well as the 2 Driders I got as well. Weird bricks for sure

Love the quality of these showcases! Do you have any plans to cover other sets, perhaps from the pathfinder lines? Thanks!
Yes indeed, and thank you! In fact our next video will likely be a Pathfinder Battles set. Stay tuned!
What an incredible looking set. I know understand why the price is so high in this set.
These old sets go in and out of production it seems, so the price can fluctuate. It can be worth tracking it and trying to catch it when new sets hit the market. -Theo
I went into my local game store and they had 2 sealed bricks and I snatched them up! They were 99 a piece and I got a Beholder in the first box! I go there every week and have never seen ROD boxes
Doubting Thomas Nice! Congratulations dude. That’s really awesome that you were able to get your hands on them for so cheap.
@@WarriorDescending Thanks! So I went back 2 days ago and Jim see another RID brick behind the counter, I had actually called earlier that day to have them hold a monster menagerie 3 brick and so when I asked for my brick they hand me the ROD brick and I kept my mouth shut.....and I got a second damned Beholder! So I'll be looking for local trades or sell it. Really wanted the Red Dracolich , but I did also get a Gild Shadow Dragon which goes once with the regular Gold one I got from the first 2
Oh im definitely getting this
New drinking game. Take a drink every time DotMM is mentioned.
Every creature shows up in that adventure! 😂 -Theo
That dracolich mini is awesome! How many invisible variants are there in this set?
It is really cool, isn’t it? There are three invisibles and two “shadow” invisibles. For this set, everything including all the invisibles are shown in the video. We don’t always track down all the invisibles, but we did for this one.
This and Monster Menagerie 1 were the only sets so far where they did Large Invisibles. I do wish they did more of those as it makes sense for some monsters, like Otto the Faerie Dragon from the upcoming Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage.
And the "shadow" invisibles actually give you story opportunities!
Looks like this will be the 2nd brick I order. Hope I get as lucky as the mad mage brick :D
Good luck, VS! :-) -Theo
The painting on some miniatures would be better done by my 6 year old nephew.
Kudos to the quality of your video
But damn..duergar,drow,derro etc. damn I’ve gotta order some of these.
I’m just in love with deep:.omfg I’m seeing the drider now omgomg
A bunch of bricks like a dope house
Your presentation is amazing! The minis though... By pre-painted, do they mean they painted the plastic before they cast it?
Thank you! My understanding is that the last step in the production process is to have the minis painted by hand in an assembly-line process using overlays. The paint jobs are pretty consistent, but you can see subtle differences across multiples of the same mini.
@@TheGallantGoblin I just got a brick of Waterdeep Dragon Heist, and was truly impressed with how well most of them were painted. Other than basing, they really don't need anything else to be good quality. Easily the best consistency I've seen in any of my own purchases.
It's definitely getting better over time. I think the Icons line is still lagging behind the Pathfinder line a bit when it comes to the quality of paint and sculpts, but I've been noticing improvements in the last few Icons releases.
The paint job on some really hurt my eyes. Just started to paint myself but i do get much bettrr results.
It's funny how you ended up getting a Chasme every time you brought the pack. I'm guessing "swarm of chasmes" is an encounter your poor players are going to have to contend with in the future.
I know, right? I really need to run an Avernus campaign with all these devils and demons I have now. -Theo
Lol I got 3 Chasmes from 3 bricks. And 2 Beholders....swarm of Beholders!?
i got a whole case of these and while I love it (got the beholder too) one thing that drove me absolutely nuts was soooo many flying bases to connect....good thing I have this awesome glue...another thing I was annoyed with was that I got 1 lizardfolk fighter but 4 shield dwarf wizards and 3 human wizards!!! and i got I think 4 banshees to go with some banshees i got from another set (I think boneyard)....how do I sell that to my players? AN ARMY OF BANSHEES APPEARS IN THE FOREST SURROUNDING THE CAMP, MAKE 10 SAVING THROWS....I also got no broken minis FYI....I got the dracolich and the first wing was super easy to put in but the second one took forever to squeeze in there
Yeah, the flying bases are the bane of my existence. I do rather like the recent sets that don't have as many PC minis. -Theo
@@TheGallantGoblin I just got a case of descent into avernus and am really pleased with the distribution, lack of flying bases, and how well it compliments the rage of demons case....do you have a comprehensive list somewhere of what creatures appear in which published modules? you seem to have a lot of knowledge on that I'm wondering where that comes from..I really would love that list!
@@quonomonna8126 Hey! I'm glad you were happy with your case! No, I don't currently have a comprehensive list unfortunately. I'd love to be able to put one together. Having a database of minis was always my dream, but I just haven't had the time to put something like that together. Currently I just use DndBeyond to help me see which creatures show up in which adventures, as well as my own memory of playing certain adventures. Thanks! -Theo
I’ve got a great Nightmare mini but he doesn’t have the flames. Rather just a clear look and he’s from a Theros booster. Is that why the orange is gone? Have noticed theros creatures, lots of times, have that godly galactic look instead. (Idk how to explain it) I figure that’s why because this setting is very “Gods of MTG”.
The Theros and Ravnica minis are based on art from the Magic: The Gathering cards which can have slightly to extremely different aesthetics from traditional D&D. We tried to show the closest reference art we could find to the mini to show. But yes, being based on Magic art is why that nightmare doesn't have flames (to be fair though nightmares aren't strictly confirmed to be part of the Theros setting at all, so its inclusion is a little strange). In addition to the nightmare here in Rage of Demons, there's also one from the Descent Into Avernus set though that one's a rare and comes with a swappable rider. -Grady
@@TheGallantGoblin lol wait I have lots of ravnica minis and theros. The nightmare I’m speaking of,maybe from Ravnica. (I’m obsessed with Ravnica). I like your polite way of correcting me lol.
@@TheGallantGoblin maybe it is gr
Theros. Lol idk but either way, don’t get me wrong. I love my Bightmare :p. I plan on using him in a Strahd game in which I’m using a Mind drinker vamp in place of Strahd.
@@TheGallantGoblin recently picked up the guild tin Ravnica dice set and I love them. So light and the somewhat ice like design on them is awsome. I also love that it gave me a d10 with the guild emblems on it.
What is the after market
I love these fn Minis the best..aside from one thing. What is up with some of these paint jobs?
Paint jobs have improved in the more modern sets. This was one of the first Icons of the Realms sets and they've come a long way since then. -Theo
@@TheGallantGoblin really it was just a couple minis in the beginning of the video that I didn’t care for..paint wise. Later in the video I felt as if I was eating my words. These are some of the most beautiful minis I’ve ever seen. But I’m so bias for the underdark. I just can’t get enough. (Love your vids man)
scouts have a stat block which can gain drow racial components...
Oh very cool and good to know, thank you! -Grady
👍🏻
I wish WOC would re-do this set with new paint jobs it would be fantastic
To our understanding they won't be redoing old lines with new paint jobs but they will re-release creatures from older sets. For example, all the dragons are being redone and the night hag from Storm King's Thunder is getting a new figure and pose in Icewind Dale.
Derro have been around a lot longer than 5E
Yes indeed. Though I focus mostly on 5e lore in these videos to keep things simple. -Theo
Aj Pickett channel got long vids with many images on these monsters it's better then dungeon dudes n web dm cause they show no images just themself n we tuned in for info.and images like this and Aj channel
Am i the only one who HATES the invisible ones?
You are absolutely not the only one who finds them almost entirely useless. Particularly for creatures who don't have the ability to turn invisible!
@@TheGallantGoblin RIGHT?! and even if they do turn invisible i just remove them from the board. Idiotic, oh well the rest are cool.
@Everlett I do tend to use them (rarely) for when a character turns invisible as a marker of where they were last seen. I also sometimes employ them as ghosts or specters. I guess they are low cost additional options for a set and you only get two per case, so it could be worse. But I do wish they'd be a bit more judicious or creative with their options.
@@TheGallantGoblin well that is a good idea with the use as ghosts, though I've only monsters lol. I just paint them but its always a disappointment to me.
Oh, hmm, I've never considered painting them. That's pretty smart. I assume with some primer they come out looking like any other mini, yeah?
