We were under the Ottoman empire for 395 years. And we kept our identity thanks to God, our faith, and the Ortodox Church. We celebrated Ortodox Easter in nazi German and nazi Croatian concentration camps. Serbian army crossed Albanian mountains in the winter of 1914, when reatreating from Austro-Hungarians. And we came back to our country 4 years later, when the Serbian army was chasing Bulgarians to Sofia, and Austro-Hungarians to Vienna. There was a saying back then "Run, the dead Serbs are charging"

Montenegro and Kosovo are regions where Serbs are from, our motherlands. Serbs are majority in Montenegro, yet some new age political strains decided to make a brand new nation out of them. These protests are for preservation of national Serbian identity.
New age political strains? It's all Milo Đukanović's work, he was quite pro-Serb at first then did a total 180 and had a referendum to split off from Serbia in 2006 which was successful and more recently recognized Kosovo. The straw that broke the camel's back was the government trying to take the property of the Serbian Orthodox Church. At that point everyone had enough, that guy has been in power for over 20 years now, however his party lost the majority in the parliamentary elections in 2020, not sure when the next presidential election is over there, hopefully he loses.

Stega was the first written law in Montenegro, first Constitution like document, written in year 1796. with only 6 clauses. It's more of a moral codex, those who won't fight Turks will be cursed, dishonored and remembered as traitors. Also, very important thing about Stega is that our Church was named as a "keeper" of this hand written law. Momišići, Podgorica - Serbian Vatican :)) that was nice.
So this song was inspired by the religious protests that started in Montenegro few years ago. Montenegro is mainly populated by Christian Orthodox Serbs but the government is straying away from the traditional core Serbian values shifting towards the West. All Orthodox churches and monasteries in Montenegro are still under jurisdiction of Serbian Orthodox Church, and thats how they survived throughout history. Government of Montenegro passed a law basically that says that all religious properties belong to the Government in order to take some sacred relics and possessions away from the Serbian Orthodox Church. There’s been a rumor that some certain secret societies of the west are pursuing those relics and are willing to pay a lot. (Right Hand of St. John the Baptist that Baptized the Lord, some of the Nails from the Holy Cross and many more are being kept within some churches and monasteries in Montenegro and Serbia.) So this was a religious uprising of regular Serbian people who protested against that law that confiscates the church properties away from the Serbian Orthodox Church. The long prayer-walks that you are seeing are specific type of protest/prayers called Litija and they spread across the whole Balkans during that time, in Serbia, Montenegro and Serbian populated parts of Bosnia. And we won.
"Stega" is the first law written in the area of old Montenegro from 1796. The author was Metropolitan Petar I. Petrović Njegoš, the great and wise Serbian statesman. I am so grateful for the unity my people showed in those difficult times, defending our holy faith and holy monasteries. The former Montenegro government tried (and failed) to take away the property of the Serbian Orthodox Church. As a result, people in Montenegro, Serbia, and in the Republic of Srpska gathered for months, the "litija" - a solemn procession of Orthodox believers, led by the clergy, followed by prayer!

It is MONTENEGRO, where Orthodox Serbs and Orthodox Montenegrins live. There are many Serbian monasteries there, and the authorities in Montenegro wanted the churches to separate. Of course, the people prevented that from happening, and these pictures are mostly from that country. Just to clarify that the Montenegrins are actually Serbs, they are the same people. Their government recognized the so-called Kosovo, but the Montenegrins did not want that and they were also on the war front in the 90s and their ancestors were with us during all the wars.
