  • This video goes over some of the most used blocks in the game including 3 wedge sets, thin blocks, and curve blocks. I try to show practical applications of them in use with many examples. This is more of a beginner tutorial and focuses on blocks I think every serious builder would want to know. Knowing these blocks and angles will help you understand how so many other blocks and parts will also work and line up and what is possible. This is part 1 of 3 planned tutorials on blocks and shaping.

    Thanks JR, worth watching even after 4 years. The mess in the block menu reflects the state of the game. I love the game, dont get me wrong but it is very cumbersome to use. What a bummer.

    Back in Empyrion again. Found your tutorials helpful over a year ago and needed a refresher course, thanks. I just wish the Dev's would name blocks by the slope in degrees (Rather than alphabet only.) Plus they would group them together better for easier access. I noticed you bouncing around menus constantly to get to the right block which about the thousandth time doing it would get annoying, LoL! They could also show a completed group shape of a few blocks and list the parts used like you do here but have in-game. It would be easier on us. I keep having to go back to my notes with my little drawn pictures with block placements, he, he! Been enjoying many of your MCRN designs in-game too. Great work sir! Trying my own hand in designs with ships with better cockpit views. (Don't prefer using the "V" key view.)

    If you don't mind, I'd like leave a tip for you and my fellow followers. If you are going to be using the same shapes over and over, assign each shape to a number on the taskbar. Load the taskbar with a stack of blocks for each shape you are going to use. I always put the basic cube in #1. For the next stack... right click and choose the block shape you want for #2, then #3 and so on. This will save you the trouble (and time) of constantly changing block shapes. I hope this helps. ~MuFu
    EDIT: Don't forget that each time you refill a slot you have to choose your shape again.

    amazing really. trying to build a ship I had and loved in Eve Online and its a real headache. I havent found anyone who built it right, so I thought I could do it haha... impossible, got a headache after working on a piece for 4 hours. I must admit, your video is extremely helpful. some of these blocks and shapes are not easy to see right away how you can mix them together. Thank you for taking the time!

    This is wonderful information, Jeff. I love your ability to teach, making an overwelmingly (seemingly) complicated subject into bite sized, acheivable steps. Havent seen this fairly complex topic presented this well anywhere else. I will have to watch this several times, step by step, with the game open on my second monitor. Your work, and creativity, is very much appreciated :)

    What would really help building is the names on the blocks it should be for example corner half 45 deg.
    So you know the angles on them from the name or description. Some of the pictures are misleading. Great video series though

    Hey Jeff, just passing by to say thanks for your tutorials! Your building experience and approach in this game is unparalleled. I'm trying to build a ship and failing miserably. I just hope watching your vids and trying to at least walk in some of your steps could help me build better.
    I'm trying to build one of my favorite ship designs in Star Citizen - MISC Freelancer. Damn it's hard! This ship is such a round sausage of a shape. Really difficult to copy that in Empyrion. But I'm not giving up so far.
    On a side note - the building system in this game, and especially how they group stuff in the RMB menu is beyond me. The UI and everything is terrible, the learning curve is the steepest as a result :(

    One of the worst problems I have with building, is what shape goes with which group. I'm always taking 5min or so just randomly rotating parts to see what will fit...and then I'll forget a half hour later what I used so I go through it all again. XPXP

    On the 45 degree building at the end it looks like you could use the stuff you did on the top to give a ship a fossil looking spine. That’s really well done. These blocks are hard to learn for a beginner. I’ve spawned in some of your ships and blow holes in them just to try and repair it to learn what blocks you put together. At first it was so hard but starting to understand some of them. Can I ask what is your favorite CV to play with? Or do you mostly just build?

    • @jeffrandall2813
      @jeffrandall2813  4 года назад

      Thanks. I do mostly just build, but I am thinking I would like to give it run thru when A12 goes live. As in my favorite CV, IDK at the time. I guess I will have to pick a starter and then figure out what I want the end game CV to be. But I don't know how powerful of a ship I would want based on whats out there and how many HV's/SV's I want to take with me and collect. lol Thanks again!

  • @normal6969

    Really fine series, I'll see it thru.
    The important thing (at least for me) to know that the possibility is there, and it worths to search for the right block, it is there. :)
    There is only one game I know which has a better building interface: mirror lines, area copy/save/load, better block turning, undo/redo, full length slopes (not just different 1x1x1m ones), free (like in Empyrion) and cursor building, fill area, moving parts, sensor logic, drawable breadboard, detailed AI settings.
    When you are ready, you can dogfight, combat, pilot it, or send into war as just one kind of unit in your huge army.
    Sadly it's extremely complicated - a funny review is called "Somalian pirate simultor" :D

I have a question though, I found a blueprint I wanted to make, but after I subbed I went to the factory, and it says it has a forbidden block, and it's in red. How do I fix that so I can make it? I figured if anyone knew, it would be you!

    Even the platform for shooting the tutorial is more detailed than some other creators builds :)
    14:30 - try Avorion, it basically has 5 block types but you can make any angle slope. Sadly it does not have pipes but you can make those too.
    I think there is a texture that outlines block shape because its hard to see pieces with the one you've chosen.
    37:03 - and now I'll show you some God work in progress 0_0 You should've toggle a symmetry mode to show what do you mean under "completely in 45 degree angle"

    • @jeffrandall2813
      @jeffrandall2813  4 года назад

      Thank you! I have played Avorian and love that set up for angles and wedges. I do wish EGS could someday so something like that. Basically being able to use any angle in voxel blocks you want. It would allow for ships shaped like a star destroyer or Enterprise to be able to be done fairly accurately in game. That would be amazing! :) I will get to the symmetry too in future tutorials. Thanks again!

    • @DmytroBogdan
      @DmytroBogdan 4 года назад +1

      @@jeffrandall2813 under symmetry mode I meant that its not obvious at first that base built diagonally and not along the grid.
      I'd love to see some of your Avorion creative ideas, maybe after 9th of March official launch? ;)
      It would be nice to have some variety of content on the channel

      @@jeffrandall2813 Boundless has an interesting block build method where you can chisel using different tools for different angles. You get some really nice diagonal blocks that way. You either hit a face, an edge or a corner with appropriate chisel. Google "Boundless Chisel tutorial" you'll soon see.

    Sorry to be a pedant, but doubling the length of the base of a triangle doesn't half the angle from 45 to 22.5 degrees. Just like, more intuitively, halving it doesn't double the angle from 45 to 90 degrees. Great video, though. Marrs is now using better shapes ;-)

      First tone your mouse down in sensitivity and uncheck (turn off) hardware acceleration . Then upgrade to 12.xx experimental (or latest) there are now sliders for the pitch, roll, and yaw axis' now on the statistics page of the logistics menu. Try it good luck and see me back. PS if you're still using RCS get rid of them. I use the replaceblocks CMD for old ships when upgrading.;

      MajorTom360 - aw man i was responding to your comment and it hanged when i sent it.
      it's not the mouse, i tried with controller and it persists, it's the same if i control with the keyboard. i researched at the time and i saw that the problem is in the unity engine, i saw videos fixing the problem but it's up to the developer because it's in the coding. i watched other people playing Empyrion and they have the same problem, actually i think everyone has this issue but they are overlooking it. they changed something in the last patch and caused the problem, i'm 100% sure it's not on my end because i can see other people playing like this.
      I moved to something else for now while i wait for the next stable update to see if it's fixed.
      i appreciate your help, hopefully they fix this.
