  • Not every BJJ or martial arts instructor is a good one. Sometimes you start training with a person only to slowly realize that they're not the best coach for you. What do you do then?

I see the blue book to your left - Judo Gene Labell's Encyclopedia of Finishing Holds. Love that book.

Greeeeeaaaattt Video!!!!!!! Switching gyms was one of the most difficult transitions I ever had to do, but was necessary, very glad I did. Attitude of the Leaders of the gym so vital for those looking at the long haul. In my opinion. The fall out is also was ridiculous, and how the leaders deal with a student leaving says volumes as well.

In the process of thinking about moving gyms myself. Going to be really hard because my coach wouldn’t allow training at two gyms at once and if I leave the bridge will be thoroughly burned and my coach will talk bad about me to me old teammates for the rest of time.
I just need more training and more advanced training partners though it’s nothing against him or the team I have just outgrown the place.

Been at my gym for 7+ years and have really outgrown the place. Bjj is also only available 3x per week and I’m becoming a white belt assassin as there are not many other advanced belts there.
Going to be really sad to leave as my coach wouldn’t tolerate training at another gym part time and I’ve seen how badly he burns people who move gyms.

A question for you Mr Kesting or anyone really, what books would you recommend for wrestling? You have an awesome library behind you.

I wouldnt say my coach is "bad". Hes a great guy for sure and he knows what hes doing, its just that he's only a 4 stripe blue belt so its not like we could ever advance as whitebelts

Tactical Ministries My first BJJ coach was a blue belt and I learned a ton from him

It just feels so wrong in this modern Jiu Jitsu world where everyone talks about lineages and how long it takes to get belts and stuff like that.

@@tacticalministries3508 feel wrong doesn't mean it is wrong. You can learn a lot from a white belt with a little more experience than you.

My first coach was a 3 stripe blue. As long as he is capable of tapping you somewhat regularly he still has a lot to teach you. I was teaching at blue belt level as well with 12-13 years in at the time. I made sure all my guys advanced in belts by becoming affiliated with a 3rd degree black belt out of state. He comes to visit regularly for seminars and testing.

I never had one coach, I would train across multiple schools with good coaches and most of my learning was from other senior grades at each school. When your hitting the tournament scene you soon get to know the fool ass coaches that bully people and go hard on junior players.
