During the 1972 Munich Olympics, in the middle of the night, I stumbled across what could only be called “novelty coverage” of a Team Handball contest being broadcast over the air. I’d never heard of the game (to Americans, “handball” is like Squash without rackets). After just a couple of minutes of watching, I was amazed. The Olympics have been my only real chance to see the sport at all - and not many games were shown here in the US. Almost nobody has heard of the sport and I keep talking about it every 4 years. Over the years, I’ve managed to see more and more of the sport as the American broadcaster has needed material to fill several cable channels during The Games. With streaming finally coming of age, I’ll be able to see as much of the tournament as I like. I’m 58 years old now so I’ll never actually be able to play the game, but I’ll still watch and promote it whenever I get the chance.
Wow @djplong , I love that story! Why don’t you ask the next sports hall to let you train in it? Just do what you want to do. In my opinion, i love the Sport. Good luck…

The notion that James could become world class in 6 months is ludicrous, other than both sports use a ball, it is a totally different skill set. That said, the US could be really good at team handball, lots of not quite good enough for basketball could excel as could baseball players.
I remember before there was a selection of i think NBA player playing a exhibition match against some semi pro handball players. Handball's a fantastic sport, though here in the UK it's hardly mentioned in the media. Probably a fair number of sports fans here may well have heard of it but most likely know little about the rules/how it's played.
I play handball in Norway backbin the 1970s and 1980s. I have luved in USA for nearly one year, and my substitute over there was basketball. Basketball is fun. At the same time, I am wondering why team handball is not widespread in the USA. If you combine the skills of a basketball player and a player of American Football, you would get a rather good handball player!!!
I think part of the problem is that in the U.S, it's confused with handball. In the U.S, we call football soccer. Maybe we need to come up with a unique name for it . Maybe Courtball.

We did not have real goals but used tape on the walls to recreat goal size. To this day I have no idea why the guy even knew about the sport. I never really saw it again until I moved to Europe.
I'm a Brazilian prospective applicant for fall 2023. I played handball from 2016 to 2020, being stopped by the pandemic. I already knew that handball was basically neglected in the US, but seeing that it's not even on the current sports list in any university is disappointing. The only way to make handball bigger in the world is to make it bigger in the US; presumably, a matter of investment and audience. If someone is reading this in January 2023, check out the Men's Handball World Championship that will be held this month in Sweden.
I want to play handball or at least try the sport out, but I can't because I live in Sacramento, California. The only other handball teams in CA are in SF and LA. :/ I can't even try it out for fun.
Are you good at taking a ball that hardly fits your palm and still you are able to throw that ball with 50miles/hour? Or, are you good at jumping high? If neither of these, then it won't be too much fun to play handball.
We played handball one year at my high school in New Jersey, USA, back in the 90s. It was awesome! I made the all-star team, even though I had never even heard of the game before then. Games got pretty chippy. I probably would have gotten a few red cards. Having played American football and basketball all my life, it was really intuitive. Fun sport. If you've played ultimate frisbee or basketball, there are some similar passing patterns. The strategy seems to be nowhere near as intricate as American football and the athletes can't compare to NBA athletes (I've played against NBA athletes: you can't understand until you have), but nonetheless handball is a great sport. In New York, we have a totally different game that's also called handball. I don't think it's played anywhere else in the world. If you watch the movie Big with Tom Hanks, you can see them play.
More like Basketball players can't compete with Handball players at all. I played both sports and football(soccer), handball is phisically on another level. Football was the easiest to play.
As an American i have NEEEVVVVEER heard of this, or even seen it before. It was only today with the Olympics on, I was wondering what the heck is that. I've lived in the Midwest and then in the East Coast. I wouldn't say I am thoroughly traveled but whhaaa??? Until today's Olympics never ever heard of this before!
@@OfficialArthusamakh I dunno, third most medals, fourth most wins, and our teams winning the champions league as recently as last year, tell another story.
@@FantasKanal There's a reason Germany hasn't been counted among the best of the best teams in over 10 years. Their success in 2016 was rather lucky in my opinion. The final should've been Norway:Spain. In the final though there was nothing to say, great match by Germany. And the 2007 semifinal was also kind of lucky with that weird referee descision in the last seconds. Yes, Germany has 3 world cups, 1 olympia and 2 euros, but 3 of those titles were 50 or more years ago and 2 of them nearly 15 years ago. As we saw at the world cup, right now Germany is not really a big threat for other teams when it comes to winning the title. I feel sorry for Gensheimer, he's probably the best German of the past 15 years and if I remember right he missed the Euro 16 due to an injury. And coming to clubs: the Bundesliga is great but it's carried by foreigners.
My daughter plays soccer (plays midfield and goalie)and volleyball and would do great in Team Handball but I've yet to find a youth club or program for her here in Houston.
"It would take 6 months to lebron James to become the best handball player in the world" ??!!! Seriously guys??! You don't get great at a sport just because you run fast and jump hight, seriously!! We have almost a century now of developping Handball in Europe, it's cultural, it's not something you just learn out of nothing. In france it is THE school sport, and our sport arenas are basicaly a Handball peach with others lines in different colors for the other sports. Quite often, at least in small towns, the sport teacher at school is also the local young team's coach.
Tylar Ward you're being ridiculous to the max and any NBA player would SUCK at handball compared to the top international level even if they dedicated their whole career from now on - it's not a random minor college sport. It's likely the 2nd biggest team sport in the world and most of Europe have a century of handball culture's head start. Forget it - it's not gonna happen !
try googling Handball teams + The name of your city/ state. If that doesn't work try getting a few friends interested and start from there... You don't need 2 full teams if you can't find that many people. We played it in school a few times and we sometimes played with 9 players each, sometimes with 5 Greetings from Croatia, Hope you find a way to give it a shot
Is it somehow possible to have Dutch subtitles? We would like to use the video to introduce handball to children to persuade them to come and play handball in our club.
La Suisse vous remercie de ne pas êtres allé aux mondiaux. Grâce à vous, on a fait des matchs de folies ! Mais j'espère croiser les USA plus souvent. Ça peut devenir intéressant avec votre implication sportive 😋
Handball is one of those sport where all the types of profile count. U need BIG cardio Body that can take hit Fast leg Strong shoulder Fast eye Big jump Andbth maestria is when u come to spin this fckin ball to do curvy or even takin 90° angles U need big team play even more in defense And goalies take 130 km/h ball full face on purpose for saving theire teams This game is cool this sport is war I love this
I think to introduce a new sport in the USA first the National Association should persuade the girls in the schools to know. For example the soccer would get some popularity in the USA through the women soccer success. The water polo got some popularity through the American women athletes as well. I think the women team handball should be used by same recipe to show the girls in the schools. The women team handball is same good entertainment in the TV or in the sport halls as the men handball.
Let's see what you'll build up in the next few years. I'd say it's never gonna happen, but France started its handball career more or less 30 years ago and have since become the best handball nation ever. And the big competitions have been around since the 30s. But until the USA can compete with the likes of Denmark, Spain, France, Norway, Sweden and Croatia, there's a long way to go. So far only two non European countries were able to claim a medal in the world championships or Olympics, one of them was probably lucky (South Corea silver 1988) and the other was won with referees and a mainly European naturalized squad (Qatar silver 2015).
The league in the US is not getting that much attraction unfortunately. They need to add it to the high school / college country wide and send their best prospects to European clubs until they can have a chance to really compete. It's going to happen eventually but it will take time.
Just listened to a video why soccer isn't that popular for tv stations: too much play, not enough breaks for commercials. Probably part of the same reason with handball. Sad that commercials dictate what sports become popular in the US
I love how people think that Handball is just an easy sport to go to from basketball or baseball. Are the best of the best in those sports very good athletes? Yes. And a lot of skills would transfer over. But the best of the best in handball are also very good athletes with skills that more closely fit handball. If handball was so easy to dominate, wouldn't we see a good US handball team in the olympics with all the basketball and baseball players the US has to draw from? And yet, the US team is full of foreign born people. Handball isn't just basketball with three steps and a goal.
I mean yes .. .and if the Noway national Basketball team played against USA it'd probably be similar. Thing is, every country has their own preferred sports
We do look at talent from our handball clubs nationwide, and also from athletes in other communities as well! It would not be too difficult to start one, email info@usateamhandball.org and we’ll send you a Start-Up Manual that will help you get started!
First of all, team handball is not for everyone. Don't know how tall and strong you are, in fact, you could play handball no matter your size and muscles, but you won't play it at a competitive level. You could be short, but you could play either a center back(play maker, so only on the offensive part) if you have great skills to handle that ball, or, you could be an winger, but you've got to jump high. Otherwise, wanna see the first team handball video game for Android? Check out: "Republic of Handball" on google play.
Yet again.... so many ignorants. You can not compare handball, basket ball and american football. But let us play with the though: If Lebron can become the best handballer in the world with only 6 month of training, Mikkel Hansen can become the best basket ball player in the world after 6 month too... or?
It's non-stop, therefore it won't fit the commercialized sporting system the USA has "invented", meaning more commercials than play because money. Handball is awesome, get on it, USA.
America wining gold in team handball at Olympics is even harder than going to Moon for real (not like the hoax from 1969). I truly believe that USA should rather follow the steps of Brazil and Argentina, both south American teams were on the same level with USA, 25 years ago. Now both teams are strong enough to constantly defeat European teams.
Imagine this having a pro league in the US, can very well be dominated by women. All the Europeans would come play here. It would an instant success! A fast pace, short court aggressive sport ! Someone call Mark Cuban and Jerry Jones !
The fuck is wrong with this articles, yeah sure lebron will definitely be no. 1 in 6 months. Or that some qb will won a gold for USA in handball. USA isn't even close to the mid-good teams and they are saying they can win gold thanks to players that didn't even played this sport before. Also lebron won't do shit in a handball match. This sport is way more aggresive and Compact than basketball.
I hope so, greeting from Croatia.

If someone is reading this in January 2023, check out the Men's Handball World Championship that will be held this month in Sweden.
hola quiero jugar balonmano
Nice video!
Played handball in Denmark,years ago!
@@republicofhandball8815if you cant trow(to goal) but you have mental problems you can become goalkeeper its fun
I.. have to question your statement that handball athletes can't compare with NBA athletes. What exactly are you basing this statement on?
Have you played against top level handball players?
More like Basketball players can't compete with Handball players at all. I played both sports and football(soccer), handball is phisically on another level. Football was the easiest to play.
@@fishtail2616I don’t understand why they think high school PE is the highest level of this sport😂😂
Very nice video. The USA can be a great team. Greetings from Macedonia, HC Vardar!
2:40, yeah, cause I am german, so i am from a nation that is actually good at it.
and I'm from Denmark :)
@@risputte congrats for winning the world championship ✌🏼
Was good at it
@@OfficialArthusamakh I dunno, third most medals, fourth most wins, and our teams winning the champions league as recently as last year, tell another story.
I’m gonna get really into handball
wait, 11 million teams and 30 million players, but each team needs at least 7 players? Must be a lot of overlap in players between teams or divisions!
There is alot of players in one team, and p there is also girls and boys teams
it looks so fun i wish i could play
My daughter plays soccer (plays midfield and goalie)and volleyball and would do great in Team Handball but I've yet to find a youth club or program for her here in Houston.
Damn, forgot how much I love being between the pipes as a team handball keeper. I really need to find a better job, so I can go to practice.
I wish I knew about this in high school
"It would take 6 months to lebron James to become the best handball player in the world" ??!!! Seriously guys??! You don't get great at a sport just because you run fast and jump hight, seriously!! We have almost a century now of developping Handball in Europe, it's cultural, it's not something you just learn out of nothing. In france it is THE school sport, and our sport arenas are basicaly a Handball peach with others lines in different colors for the other sports. Quite often, at least in small towns, the sport teacher at school is also the local young team's coach.
Yea nah bron would be a pro in ab a week
wow ok
Tylar Ward you're being ridiculous to the max and any NBA player would SUCK at handball compared to the top international
level even if they dedicated their whole career from now on - it's not a random minor college sport. It's likely the 2nd biggest team sport in the world and most of Europe have a century of handball culture's head start. Forget it - it's not gonna happen !
*handball pitch

I’m in high school and interested in joining a club where can I find clubs I can maybe join?
try googling Handball teams + The name of your city/ state.
If that doesn't work try getting a few friends interested and start from there...
You don't need 2 full teams if you can't find that many people. We played it in school a few times and we sometimes played with 9 players each, sometimes with 5
Greetings from Croatia, Hope you find a way to give it a shot
@Alfred Lauber hvilken klub og hvor gammel er du?
Is it somehow possible to have Dutch subtitles? We would like to use the video to introduce handball to children to persuade them to come and play handball in our club.
La Suisse vous remercie de ne pas êtres allé aux mondiaux. Grâce à vous, on a fait des matchs de folies !
Mais j'espère croiser les USA plus souvent. Ça peut devenir intéressant avec votre implication sportive 😋
Yeah, because of that, Suisse came back to world cup after 26 years, in 1995 Suisse played against USA at World cup, and also at Atlanta 1996.
Handball is one of those sport where all the types of profile count.
U need BIG cardio
Body that can take hit
Fast leg
Strong shoulder
Fast eye
Big jump
Andbth maestria is when u come to spin this fckin ball to do curvy or even takin 90° angles
U need big team play even more in defense
And goalies take 130 km/h ball full face on purpose for saving theire teams
This game is cool this sport is war
I love this
And fouls are autorized ....
2:40 That is my home team Kristianstad
'Why am I not playing Handball? Reason, I Didn't know about until tonight.
The women team handball is same good entertainment in the TV or in the sport halls as the men handball.
played this at pe so fun
Same video, different narrator! And you'll got handball players!!
ye the narrator seems a bit ded
Don't mind me if I use this video to bring interest to my fellow american and canadian friends
@@yanncourtel8538 this is the way
Egypt was world champion, no ?????
@@AttackTheGasStation1 no but they have good chances at that if they continue going on like in the last 2-3 years
How can I try out
Abdelrahman Abdullah Depending on where you live, you can join and try out at the nearest handball club in your area!
Yes handBALL is definitively a very GReat sport.....For Sure !
Just listened to a video why soccer isn't that popular for tv stations: too much play, not enough breaks for commercials. Probably part of the same reason with handball. Sad that commercials dictate what sports become popular in the US
How can there be 11m teams and 31m players if there has to be at least 7 players in a team????
Retired players and clubs that stop working...
team has to have at least 2 playes on all 7 positions
I love how people think that Handball is just an easy sport to go to from basketball or baseball.
Are the best of the best in those sports very good athletes? Yes. And a lot of skills would transfer over.
But the best of the best in handball are also very good athletes with skills that more closely fit handball.
If handball was so easy to dominate, wouldn't we see a good US handball team in the olympics with all the basketball and baseball players the US has to draw from? And yet, the US team is full of foreign born people.
Handball isn't just basketball with three steps and a goal.
Denmark 🇩🇰 is the World champion 🇩🇰 in 2021
Good job to Denmark it was well deserved :) Greetings from France
Played it in PE in middle school... everyone just aimed for the face
I play handball for almost 10yrs now😅
If the US women`s national team had played against Norway, would they even stand a chance ?
I mean yes .. .and if the Noway national Basketball team played against USA it'd probably be similar. Thing is, every country has their own preferred sports
Nope
50-0
A domestic professional league would be a good place to begin.
0:22 high-scoring isn’t praise in itself
Thank you for spreading the art of playing handball in the united states. I hope you convinced a few young, talented athletes to play Handball.
it does't surprise me that Americans don't know about handball. They are not aware on what's going on around them
Do you typically recruit from the handball clubs? Also, if there isn’t a club nearby to tryout for, how difficult would it be to start one?
So I see this is a combination of basketball, soccer and ice hockey (my sport)
It is like water-polo but on a ground and not in a pool. 😉
Congrats on your first ever win in the World Championship.
Your turn, America!
Yet again.... so many ignorants. You can not compare handball, basket ball and american football. But let us play with the though: If Lebron can become the best handballer in the world with only 6 month of training, Mikkel Hansen can become the best basket ball player in the world after 6 month too... or?
Where are the teams in Texas????
It's non-stop, therefore it won't fit the commercialized sporting system the USA has "invented", meaning more commercials than play because money.
Handball is awesome, get on it, USA.
Great Sport!
I play handball it is so fkn nice!
Some European nation,,butnfsr from the top nations like france denmark, norway, swedn and croatia
Imagine this having a pro league in the US, can very well be dominated by women. All the Europeans would come play here. It would an instant success! A fast pace, short court aggressive sport ! Someone call Mark Cuban and Jerry Jones !
They need to put tc right and make a league in USA it’ll blow
I’m an American and I hade no idea what hand ball was

USA has a few team but there are too bad
If US teams kneel they never will get fans
The fuck is wrong with this articles, yeah sure lebron will definitely be no. 1 in 6 months. Or that some qb will won a gold for USA in handball. USA isn't even close to the mid-good teams and they are saying they can win gold thanks to players that didn't even played this sport before. Also lebron won't do shit in a handball match. This sport is way more aggresive and Compact than basketball.
