Not to mention that China was transitioning from the Manchu Qing regime to the Warlords period until 1948 when General Chiang and his loyalists were driven out of the mainland. So, very few ships actually built in the nation during those times.

If a ship had meh capabilities and meh service history, let it be an unremarkable Azur Lane ship. Not every ship can or should be UR / SSR.
There is merit to what you say but what distincts this game from that of a game where it is simply the ships themselves is that we are given actual characters to be attached to. Old phrase of "Every Pokémon has it's fan" where it applies just as well here, every shipgirl has their fan. It's not wrong to want your favorite to be good. From Amagi's original event run I loved her, even way past her falling off I still used her out of attachment and to see the day we were given Amagi CV, giving me a good and modern version of my very favorite ship of the longest time.
