Without wanting to sound too patronising it’s great to see women enjoying off-roading as well as men. When I was a kid my mums car was a green 110 county V8, nobody messed with her.

And, because you've been so gracious in accepting my unsolicited advice, I wouldn't mind giving one more gem but it's going to be controversial. Tyre Pressures (if you want to start a fight around a camp fire in Australia, just say those two words.)
My main advice for tyre pressures is simple: As much as needed but as little as possible.
If anyone wants to give you a number, just turn to them and say "That works for your car, but mine is set up differently."
When you get stuck, let a little more air out and try again. Then, when you make it, you'll know, "Right, in this situation, xxx psi work in these situations." AS much as needed but as little as possible.
And there is more fun in getting stuck and getting to try again. It's not always the most fun to conquer everything the first try. Where, then, lies the goal

Honestly, you'd be amazed how capable a standard Defender 90 is. It's all down to the driver.
I've followed heavily modified 90's (axle diff locks, Mud Tyres, Lift Kits) in to situations, after they've been recovered on a rope. I'd been given good advice on how to get through, in my almost standard 90 (only AT Tyres) by some very experienced individuals, and we popped out the other side without issues. I echo comments here about tyre pressures, a compressor is used more than a winch.
If you plan to fit a lift kit, don't forget to look at the changes that might be needed to prop shafts and brake lines. It's not just as simple as fitting bigger springs.
Finally, remember that a lift kit won't stop you grounding out on your front diff casing, so if it were me, I'd save the money and buy a decent compressor!

martingump thanks! Yes will be going for new Tyres and testing the waters with that first. As with anything it’ll be good to get out for some more trips and challenging lanes to learn how to get through difficult ones. The lift kit would only ever be 2” which in hindsight, shouldn’t have required too much change to the UJ or prop angles and brake lines but, would double check anyhow and make sure as I wouldn’t want to cause more issues! Thank you! I appreciate the feedback and looking forwards to some more trips outs

@@carsandbras2202 I urge caution with larger diameter tyres. They'll raise your overall gearing, which will throw your speedo out (not such a problem in a Defender), but will also put more strain on components at lower speeds. You'll be much more likely to snap a driveshaft or chew a diff due to the increased gearing.
Larger tyres will also increase your speed in lower ratios a little, reducing the amount of control you have negotiating tricky situations.
Land Rovers have been in continuous development since 1947, and even the Army shy away from modifications to tyres and suspension too far from standard. In my opinion, your BFG's are an excellent tyre, and will do the business in most situations. If it's not broken, why fix it?
That said, I have found the Fourby boost ring, the Morgan Hill Boost Pin and the fuel pump spacer from Fourby to be brilliant modifications to my 300tdi engine. I recommend.
As you're not too far from Ipswich, can I suggest popping along to the Suffolk Land Rover Owner Club (www.slroc.uk.com), when this Covid thing allows? They have their own 'playground' just outside Ipswich, with 3 courses of increasing difficulty. They have a full calender of driving days and trials (yes, off roading CAN be competitive!). Dates are on their website. I've learnt much, and recommend spending time with the girls and guys there.

Some good comments here - I’d keep it as standard as possible, get some good tyres and improve your driving. It’s unbelievable where a standard Defender with good tyres will get. Buying stuff first is a bit of a trap to avoid I think.
A lift won’t raise your axles - will make it have a higher centre of gravity - and that’s not great on side slopes.
HD makes the ride firmer - but it’s the soft complaint suspension that can mould itself to the ground and articulate more easily.
If your tyres won’t grip it doesn’t matter about anything else - 255/85/16 is a good size but it’s a narrow choice. They fill the arches nicely - give a bit more clearance under your axles and aren’t too wide. 235’s are bit small - 265’s are a bit too wide and you lose too much lock in my opinion.
Recovery points are worth getting if you’re going to push it a bit and are with people.
So : practice - tyres - practice - recovery points - and practice.

Very dependant on what you predominantly use your car for but if it’s mainly off road stuff you do Id ditch the roof tent until you need it and would highly recommend a +2” lift and some 33” MT’s. The bigger tyres get the axles a bit higher and the lift improves the ride quality and the additional flex is the key part. I rarely found hitting my axles as a problem as they move with your tyres, it’s down to line choice, unless your in some mega ruts. A lift picks the chassis up a nice amount to wear you don’t have to worry as much about front and back end clearance, and radius arm mounts etc. The main thing with the lift is the added articulation and flex, it improves the grip if the car.

  • @nomad_miffy
    @nomad_miffy 4 года назад

Just a query , why a lift kit ? Are you hoping to fit 33's to lift you diffs higher? Otherwise slightly change your angles with bumpers higher due to chassis being higher . I'm not sure but on discoverys extended brake lines are recommended for 2" . Loads of lanes over here in Wiltshire also . Keep it up 👍

200TDI preferred one? By you or in general? Yes the 200TDI was better than what went before, but from the ones I’ve heard it was a noisy engine, I have 2 TD5 defenders 110 and 90 and the TD5 imo is a great engine, also with having an ECU it can be worked on so it can make the Land Rover less like a slug on the road. Also the TD5 has a timing chain, not belt which imo is another massive plus as chains break rarely belts are much more prone to break. Also the TD5 being 5 cylinder sounds soooo good. But each to there own. I’ve been watching and enjoying your videos great stuff🙂👍

I enjoy an occasional bit of mountain biking because you can go anywhere and would love to do a proper land rover adventure but I've never really understood the whole playing in the mud pit and getting endlessly stuck thing. But you have made it click for me it's all about the upgrades, making your car better for the next time. In a weird kind of way a bit like drag racing.

Mini Eggs I agree! it’s nice to have a change of scenery and explore. The getting stuck in the mud is fun for the challenge but, the upgrades are more function over form as that place was very tame and it still struggled. Just wouldn’t want to get caught out without a lift kit fitted and snag the underside even on a simple trail or riverbed 😅

And a lift kit wont solve all of the issues. It doesnt raise the diff pumpkin, for instance. Larger diameter tyres is also worth considering, when you go to replace them. (Or consider portal axles if youre allowed to have them in the UK, but larger diameter tyres is easier, cheaper, more sensible.)

    • @carsandbras2202

Peter Middo tyres is definitely needed, the whole set up needs to be researched and figured out as it’s now loaded with additional 145kg weight as well. HD suspension will be needed but again, it’s finding the correct set up to run with new tyres ect, I don’t think axle replacements is what I need at the moment but later down the line potentially. I’m just reading through the comments on people’s feedback to gauge an idea on tried and tested. Always a working progress and through trial and error!

I've got 235/85 r16 on my 94' 200tdi, always been good for me and like jpaul36 says a lot less drag and rolling momentum than 265s. Theres also some argument between series and defender drivers on how thinner tyres cut through the mud to hard surface underneath vs wide tyres that spread the load. Tbf can always air down a thinner tyre for more footprint. Plus they look a bit more standard than wider wheels.
If you're into strong wheels look for a set of Wolf Steel Wheels, part no. ANR4583 (make sure they're tubeless type the old military ones are tubed from what i remember). The new re-production ones are readily available, they're made from thicker metal so can take a hell of a beating. However some say you need to fit longer hub studs but they poke out of the nut by about 18mm (part no. FRC7577 these are 60mm opposed to the 40mm standard ones), the army never bothered they just torque them to 170nm to compensate, thats what i've done and not had a wheel come off yet, and i once did 80mph down hill with a strong tailwind hahaha
