The woman knows how to work a camera. She looks at the camera at key moments in the song and you feel as though she is singing the song right at you. love her.
Yes. Excellent awareness. They used to have a light on the camera light up when it was the "live" one. Joan was probably very good at spotting that light while playing.
She does this in live concerts too. First time I saw her at The Living Room in Providence, Rhode Island in mid/late '80's, she looked right at me for about 5 seconds and then winked before looking away. I melted and from there, Joan Jett has always been my favorite live performer. Went on to see her at least a dozen times... 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
This is probably my favorite song ever. I love that she updated it since I grew up with MTM. My 25-year-old daughter was killed a few days ago in a head-on collision. This song, for me, says everything. Her smile did indeed light up the world, and she was just breaking out on her own.
RIP Mary Tyler Moore, Joanie did some bang up job of your theme song! You know you have left a lasting mark, when another epic woman covers a song about you. We will miss you!!
That is the best ass-kicking Letterman Live Performance this south-of-the-equator-bound human being has ever witnessed. Bow down in shame, tonight show orchestra!!!
Went to a Boston concert, where she opened. Before it, I didn't really get her fanatic fans who showed up with black fingernail polish. She's cool and there is something magnetic about her. Better in concert than recorded. This song was my favorite.
Never seen this before. it's perhaps the best Joan Jet ever. I'm both thrilled and sombered by both Dawn's losses below and the loss of my beloved daughter a year ago. The love of others and gifts of music like this this are among the things that get you throw it and make make life enjoyable.
You gotta love Joan, she doesn't say a word just comes out with guns blazing. Great punk/power pop version of the Sonny Curtis song. Joan's homage to MTM.
Still love Joan! I still have a bump on my nose from when it got broken slam dancing in the mosh pit at a Joan Jett concert at the Whiskey A GoGo years ago.
Why is the fact that this is just a little bit slower makes the shivering more intense. Never thought this song would hit me so hard all these years later. I remember this when I first heard it on CD and was like, no way! Played the hell out of it because I thought that this was so awesome. And it is. But for some reason I got here from the end credits of WKRP. That would've been an awesome one for her to cover. But enough of that. I think I will play this for the 4th time now. I'm sure it ain't gonna be the last. Thanks Joan. And whoever wrote the original.
This song was written by Sonny Curtis who was a boyhood friend of Buddy Holly and has been the lead singer and guitarist for the Crickets for 6 decades. He is a legendary songwriter.
Wow Joan you really made me happy when you added Rock N' Roll recipe to this my favorite inspirational theme song. You rock. Baby, please remake Do You Want to Dance by Bobby Freeman. You will get a Platinum record no doubt and it will sell millions of copies and you will earn millions of more dollars! Your music is so energetic! You go Girl!
It seems a consensus that this live version was as good or better than the studio version, and it had more energy, if that's possible. The only thing missing was the power of the studio backing vocals, but the live energy covered that without any problem. I'm guessing that was Paul Shaffer adding the little keyboard lick at the very end. I was very impressed with Joan's vocal live on this video --- her vocal is very professional and spot-on with no letdown.
Excellent, is all I can say!! This song gets me, "up and going" when feeling negative and/or sluggish..... The extra 'umph' that Joan Jett puts into it, makes it extra special!
joan dedicates her style to her big brother Jeffery Hyman...but this song is dedicated to Sonny Curtis ..Buddy Hollies guitar player in the 1950's. Sonny Curtis wrote this song like many other huge rock hits!
+Jett Crash very true..Jeff Hyman only had one brother, micky, no sisters..I mean she obviously got the style from Douglas and Jeff..and Hails them as her influence publicly and regularly. Sibling in music ...duh
Sonny Curtis is in the songwriters hall of fame. He was in the Crickets after Buddy Holly left and he wrote a Crickets song called "I Fought the Law" that became a hit when covered by the Bobby Fuller Four. The Everly Brothers had a hit with "Walk Right Back".
Joan is winking at ME. Cuz she remembers me and Wayne riding around on his BMX in the 80's digging the Blackhearts on the ghetto box in the dirty Shwa.
Ahh, good catch. I was wondering what Paul was doing/playing during the performance. That flourish at the end was a clever ref to the show’s ending (and definitely an unJett)
MTM, thanks to the wonderful body of work you've left behind for future generations, you'll always turn the world on with your smile. You will take a nothing day and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile. Thanks to you there will always be love all around. Yes, you truly made it after all. R.I.P., MTM.
Those eyes. No one can look at a camera like Joan.
Is anyone here watching this for the millionth time? I love it so much!!!
Denise Suzanne yes...I cant stop!
Yup....cant get enough!
Love it. The last “ Who can turn the world with a smile?” is ferocious. On to the next million!
Maybe 20th.
I have watched this video 27 million times. Joan Jett is mesmerizing.
The woman knows how to work a camera. She looks at the camera at key moments in the song and you feel as though she is singing the song right at you. love her.
And half winks

The wink melts me every time. Love the hair the eye shadow…

I’m sorry you have to go through such pain. Hang in there.
I’m so sorry.
Love the song & show. So so so sorry for your loss. 🌹❤️
So SORRY! God bless you!
I am so sorry she left so soon 🙏🏽
Joan Jett's Talent drips off her Guitar onto the stage where she is standing.....you just don't see that evert day.....
RIP Mary Tyler Moore, Joanie did some bang up job of your theme song! You know you have left a lasting mark, when another epic woman covers a song about you. We will miss you!!
who knew this song could rock and be arranged this way, Joan could only pull this off and make it sound current.
Best rock cover of a tv show theme song ever !
juandenz2008 Husker Du fans would beg to differ but that's okay.
I like the HD one, but prefer the JJ version.
Ramones "Spiderman theme" is pretty damn good.
I prefer the Husker Du version, but it's a completely different song. This one is more faithful to the original version.
I'm going to vote for the Batman Theme by The Jam.
My mom passed away last week & this song keeps coming up in memories. I can't stop listening.
If the MTM Show premiered in the late 80s/ early 90s this is exactly how the theme song would sound. Blowing away Friends & Seinfeld etc.
That is the best ass-kicking Letterman Live Performance this south-of-the-equator-bound human being has ever witnessed. Bow down in shame, tonight show orchestra!!!
You made it after all, Mary. RIP

Man those were the days with the full amp arsenal right up on stage.
Joan Jett rocks the balls off this song!!!
love her style in this video.

Joan is the punk rock queen . Period !
i melt every time she looks at the camera
Love her direct look straight into the camera and sneer, growl, half-wink, and Rock-It !
She works the cameras like only a pro would --- helluva performance and one of the best Power Pop song performances ever.
Right?! Those eyes! Total badass and sexy! I'm a straight woman but who cares she's amazing!!
Totally felt the same thing. She’s awesome. I can’t stop watching this damn video to see her eyes and hear her voice.
Great voice. Strong, straight, bold & solid. And not at all afraid of the camera. Complete package.
What do you expect? He grew up in front of cameras. It's really one of Ralph Macchio's best covers!
@@TheKitchenerLeslie Not a real bad effort at a joke, keep working on it. You're going in the right direction at least.
YEAH!
Fucking fantastic. Joan Jett is a national treasure.
And the vote for the best cover of all time goes to...
I remember watching this live. Thanks for uploading. Tremendous.
God Bless the RUclips algorithm.
Why is the fact that this is just a little bit slower makes the shivering more intense. Never thought this song would hit me so hard all these years later. Gorgeous and talented…have had a justified crush on her for about 35 years
Totally best version of this song because it is JoaN .
Big Joan fan here. Absolutely LOVE this version, way more intense than the studio recording!
I’m watching in 2019 ❤️🇺🇸
Joanie knows how to play for the cameras. Greatness.
Wow! Music as it should be. Loud and powerful! Couldn't stop repeating again and again. Joan is amazing!!!
It's really one of Ralph Macchio's best covers!
June of 2024 - still rocking away
This song was written by Sonny Curtis who was a boyhood friend of Buddy Holly and has been the lead singer and guitarist for the Crickets for 6 decades. He is a legendary songwriter.
Yea, Never get bore watch this video....Make my new day....Love it...
her eyes are still as magnetic as ever.
They seduce me and I like guys 🤣
THIS is the best thing on youtube. on the entire internet.
love Paul Shaffer's fillip at the end. love the lead guitar. love joan's homage to MTM. this song makes me happy. imo, the best rock cover, ever.
I heard this for the first time at the end of the movie “Drop Dead Gorgeous”. Always loved it.
Deep down, on some level, I think Joan knows she did this song for me! 🥰💘
That gaze into the camera. It's devastating.
Wow, Mary Tyler Moore was never so rock and roll. I can dig this. Thank you Joan.
This is better than Joan Jett's 1980s music. What a great song. Tremendous sound.
Left handed bass player and dude on flying v rocking out.
I will sing this , and play guitar to this great great song version ,,,, in my band The ATTITUDES . Thank You Joan and Mary !
"She can turn the world on with her smile"!
Love me some Joan. Always have. She is the real deal. Period.
This song reminds me of my mom. I wonder if she knew this Joan Jett version existed
Joan Jett is epic! Always has been, always will be. Thanks for performing in Clarkston last year.
Looking back, Dave's show had the best musical performances of all the talk shows! This is another gem.
That's great YOUNG MAN. Whoops...
I love how at 01:13 you can see Paul Shaffer really rocking out to the song.
Can’t tell if he’s playing along or not
Joan Jett ... she's so .... Joan Jett
Get it? AWESOME
Lovin Joan & the gum she’s chewin

Queen of Rock / Roll
Excellent, is all I can say!!
This song gets me, "up and going" when feeling negative and/or sluggish.....
The extra 'umph' that Joan Jett puts into it, makes it extra special!
OMG I can’t even stop watching this video-amazing performance.
25 people who don't like this have absolutely no taste whatsoever.
I love you Joan. I love you Mary. RIP
Preach, Joan! The woman's a powerhouse.
I love Joan Jett !
What a surprise, I did not know she covers this song.
With her style, she puts new deeper meaning into every song she covers.
I love Joan Jett ❤️ Joan Jett always beautiful ❤️ Queen of Rock'n'Roll 🤘
RIP Mary Tyler Moore......
She really owns this song. Wow.
He. This is Ralph Macchio in drag.
*crickets*
My favorite show in the 70's I love Mary Tyler Moore. RIP😢
I can only hope your right...
Jesus christ Joan... I simply cannot think of anyone more rock and roll, seriously.
The Mary Tyler Moore Show - one of the best comedies in TV history.
This is just pure class. Loved the original, love this cover, love Joan Jett.
Agree. The backup vocals fill out the harmonies and the full voice of the instruments underline the quality of the original composition.
And to think an underdose just rocked my world. Fucking organic chemistry 😚🐋
joan dedicates her style to her big brother Jeffery Hyman...but this song is dedicated to Sonny Curtis ..Buddy Hollies guitar player in the 1950's. Sonny Curtis wrote this song like many other huge rock hits!
You know she wasn't actually related to Joey Ramone, right? They may have been friends, but not siblings.
Totally cool.
RIP MTM :(
I’d follow her anywhere.
I don't think that I've heard a rendition of this song that I haven't liked. Country, hard rock, the original. Like them all.
Most folks know this song as "You're Gonna Make It After All" and this is a great version!
No, the song is known by most folks as “Love is All Around”
this song makes me stronger... makes me want to go ahead (:
Original song was written by Sonny Curtis, a member of the Crickets, who (obviously) did't board the plane with Buddy Holly in February, 1958.
Such a bad***. I love this woman!
RIP, Mary.
Joan is winking at ME. Cuz she remembers me and Wayne riding around on his BMX in the 80's digging the Blackhearts on the ghetto box in the dirty Shwa.
It's amazing just how well this song works as as punk.
Nice CHOICE badge Joan wears
Paul adds the dingle dingle at the end, sweet.
Ahh, good catch. I was wondering what Paul was doing/playing during the performance. That flourish at the end was a clever ref to the show’s ending (and definitely an unJett)
nothing but love
what a total babe! she is my hero and inspiration. Keep rock Joanie. we love you
MTM, thanks to the wonderful body of work you've left behind for future generations, you'll always turn the world on with your smile. You will take a nothing day and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile. Thanks to you there will always be love all around. Yes, you truly made it after all. R.I.P., MTM.
DVDyke wasn’t my favorite show but when she was in a scene she was flawless.
RIP Mary Tyler Moore
Joan Jett actually smiled.
