- Our 9 year old Bernese Mountain walking our new 11wk old puppy for the first time. He likes to carry his own leash when he goes for a walk, so we wanted to see what he would do if we gave him the puppy's leash.
The song is perfect! This is a great video. We want to get a Bernese puppy and this helped us see a sweet and intelligent aspect of the breed. Thanks!

It only hurts that much to lose them because they brought you so much joy during their lives. Outliving pets sucks but the pain has aways been worth the joy for me.

Ahh I remember my Mack! He was such a loyal boy. Could walk him anywhere with out a leash and he would stay by my side. The smartest and most loyal dog I have ever had!

That is adorable! Our Grown-up Berner acted a little betrayed when we brought home her little Berner brother. She played with him but I could tell she was still sizing him up for a while. I've actually posted a video of the first time they played. You should check it out. Your pups are BEAUTIFUL!
Bernese mountain dogs are a special breed. Our family had 2 that died at 5 1/2 years old (from the same bloodline) they were aunt and nephew to one another . It was so tough, i still think about them. Our last Bernese died a few months ago and its still sad. She was almost 9 and thats a pretty fulfilling life for a berner. Although there life span is rather short they make up for it in love and personality. If anyones on the fence about owning one I promise its worth it. Been a great part of o

Wow! 14? That is great to hear! We now have a 13 week Berner, her name is Gracie. Our last Berner, "Buddi" made it to 10. She had no arthritis or dysplasia at all! But cancer killed her.

Our "Trixie" is 16 weeks and one trick I taught her is to dry her feet off when shecomes in the house. If her feet are really wet I just hold the towel and say "Dry" and she puts one foot in her towel until I rub it dry. Then I say "other" and she holds the other foot out to be dried. Then I say "back ones" and she lays down and hold her back feet in the air. They are brilliant animals.

RoommatefromHell May I ask where you live? You see, all the surveys saying that Bernese mountain dogs only get 6-8 years old are from the UK and the USA, and are from 2004 on top of that. But I'm from Europe (and the UK is only a small part of Europe, especially regarding surveys like these), so I'm a bit sceptical about these 11 years old surveys that were taken in countries where I don't live, claiming that my healthy, 7 years old Bernese Mountain Dog has a very short life expectancy. :)
Sure. I am from Germany :-) I got my dog from a very good breeder I think - his parents also got very old (12 & 13 years) and like I said before, he is still as active as a puppy :-) but you can see, sometimes he struggles to get up :D

That's a really old Bernese! I thought most only live until 8 years old.
My mum and dad are thinking about getting a Bernese... the only thing that puts them off is the short life span :( In April, we had to put our Japanese Akita to sleep due to cancer and spinal problems... she was only 6 years old! And it was so painful for us to go through with that loss, especially because she was so young. We are a big dog family; these dogs are beautiful, but I just wish they lived longer.
