PART 1 - BMW F650 GS BUCKING AND STALLING - DIAGNOSTIC TEST

  • My BMW F650GS has begun losing power at high speed again and stalling. This time leaving me stranded in the middle reservation of the motorway. Like before, once I've turned the ignition off and back on again, she starts up fine.
I had this issue a few months back but after replacing the fuel filter regulator it seemed to go. I had just built my confidence up again riding my F650 when on my way home from Wales (after about 20/30 mins), the old bucking bronco came back. After a few short bursts of the throttle with the clutch pulled in, and easing on and off the power, somehow the issue seemed to clear with out stalling so I nervously carried on with my journey. 150 miles later I pulled in to a petrol station on the motorway, filled up with fuel and joined back on. After about 5/10 mins, I pulled in to the fast lane to overtake a lorry, but this time bronco came back, and my bike stalled as I quickly squeezed in to the gap in the middle reservation. I had no stalling issues on my way down to Wales only 2 days before.
My friend has a diagnostic tool which we are using to try and locate the problem. We have discovered my o2 and air sensors appear to be faulty, and the diagnostic tool is also picking up a valve malfunction error. I have ordered a new air temp sensor which I will install this week to hopefully eliminate one of the fault codes. I also plan to do some checks on the fuel injector in the weeks to follow. More videos to come.

    Well,
I had before realized that I forgot to plug in air temp sensor back after months later , riding long way. Just felt lessened power weirdly. No stalling.
My lambda sensor has been out for years.... and runs OK. May be runs on more fuel than needed. But no stalling.
You may wanna try injector cleaning before changing it at high cost.
Fresh new battery with high CCA definitely makes 650gs runs more stably than genuine battery. Voltage at idle under 12.8V may tell you that generator or regulator rectifier is not OK.
Worse stability with grip heater on - may tell you that electric supply situation is not good.
Ah, you may wanna check wiring harness for any short cut .... I suffered it actually. Cables close to engine block are verrrry vulnerable.
Don't be too nervous. It will be under control soon. Good luck!

Hehe, I have also forgotten to plug the air sensor in before too, and I didn’t experience any stalling then either.
Thanks for the tips. The valve malfunction error hasn’t re appeared yet but I plan on taking the injector out, cleaning it up and then deciding whether it needs replacing or not. Is there a particular battery you could recommend? Would you get a lithium one?
I am wondering whether I may have confused the bikes ‘brain’ when I unplugged the ECU earlier in the year. At the time I didn’t know about running the bike up to operating temperature once re installed (without touching the throttle), perhaps this altered the way it delivers fuel through the system at high speed? Just another thought.
I will also check any other connections I stumble across, as well as inspecting the wiring. Thank you :)

      MB12U of motobatt works good.
Generally it lasts 3 years , a bit more or less.
Never worry about spill it. It is AGM.
Overally, take it as generous legacy with 20 years old buddy. Things get old and sick naturally.... I do believe you are more than ever ready to take it and enjoy it. I do thank you for those postings about 650gs.

Hi Kety, thanks for sharing 👍 M'y wife just bought the same bike and she loves it.
May i ask you where to find such a diag tool ? Many thanks.

Hi Laurent, I’m pleased your wife is enjoying the bike. I am using the GS 9/11 tool although I believe this may have been discontinued now. I am borrowing it from a friend who has the bmw x country and experienced similar stalling faults. Here is a link to a website which shows the different current products www.hexcode.co.za/products

Videos like this and others are why I’d never even consider buying one of these bikes. Darn shame because it’s otherwise a compelling platform.

Greetings, i own f650 gs 2001 and find your videos. I want to ask what program do you use for diagnostic? I have an interruption of work of engine at 4000 rpm and wanted to make diagnostic first to see if it generates any errors. Battery new (Motobatt like you install) spark new...no other obvious problems...its strange...read somewhere to change injector but not sure...

An annoying problem for you….How old is the battery? You can do a load test to see if it’s on its way out….but this type of fault usually exhibits itself on start-up, when you are most concerned with “stalling while at speed”.
A Lambda sensor is related to emissions side or air fuel ratio - symptoms would typically be running rich or lean - check your spark plug and colour chart to confirm how it’s running. Is Monster poorer than normal for fuel economy? Worth checking against a tank of fuel….but again, this is unlikely to cause the symptom of stalling at high speed.
The favourite error code for that Fault would to be the Injector valve malfunction. You only have a single cylinder engine - if the injector fails (when stressed at high rpms) - then no fuel = engine starvation = stalls. Good luck with this fault, But my money would be on that.

    • @HaynesGarage
      @HaynesGarage  Год назад +1

Thanks for your help. The battery was new at the end of last year, and I agree, I would have thought there would be more issues at low speed if it was related to this :/
The Spark Plug is on the list of things to check and possibly replace. I am trying to do one thing at a time, it's a slow process. I am unplugging the battery and ECU overnight tonight to test whether this will clear the faults on the diagnostic tool. I had read that the faults clear if you unplug it for 15 mins but this was not the case on my bike when I unplugged it for half an hour the day before yesterday. I will then install the new air sensor, re read the faults to see if that one has cleared.
I hadn't noticed Monster was running poorer than normal with fuel but I suppose I haven't paid particular attention to this.
I will remove the air box sometime soon, and check the fuel injector, I will check the spark plug at the same time but this may not be for a few weeks. My MOT runs out in a couple of weeks so I'm going to make use of having her on the road doing test rides until then :) If you think of anything else please let me know, thanks.
