Ancient Shrovetide rituals kept very much alive in Innsbruck and its holiday villages
Ever been wondering about the meaning behind Matschgerer and Huttler, Muller and Roller? Well, these imaginative names are used to describe some of the grotesque characters which form an integral part of the traditional Tyrolean Fasching (Shrovetide carnival) celebrated to this day in Innsbruck and the surrounding 25 holiday villages.
Intrigued and ready to immerse yourself in the colourful world of mystical figures? During the carnival season you’ll find plenty of opportunity to explore the fascinating realm of elaborately carved wooden masks and vizards, ornate costumes and bizarre disguises worn by mystical figures performing ancient rites to drive out winter in these parts of the world. Incidentally, behind the masks you’ll (usually!) find men, for in Tyrolean carnival folklore also female characters are impersonated by males.
