Hey Lou, this brings back memories. It is definitely a retooled/reboxed version of the 90's polystyrene Halcyon kit. Halcyon had a very impressive ALIEN/Aliens collection out and was a small company based in Liverpool, England. Unfortunately, they closed business in the late 90's but you can still find original kits online. I had great fun building it but sadly my kit collection is long lost. Enjoy the build as much as I am!
I still have a few of my halcyon kits from judge dredd movie along with the vinyl judge Anderson ( 😁 still have one unbuilt in box I need to replace the Psy judge badge as the built kit lost hers ) I wish someone would bring back the lines, good likeness's excellent sculpts decent sized if not in vinyl then polystyrene 😭I don't have room for a resin printer or the knowledge for the support struts when printing 🤫I don't even have a computer these days to do the necessary changes and a PS4 won't get the job done , like you my other kits have long been lost in time 😭I want my facehugger back 🤭
it's NOT the Halcyon kit. Two different companies can make a model of the same car and they will look the same because they are both accurate, not because they used the same molds, The same thing here. as was pointed out, this is more articulated than the old Halcyon kit.
@@aztekdummyI agree the original halcyon kit was 1/12 less actuated required way more cleanup let's not forget Ripley ala aurora/mobius body style, comparing the two is like saying that the BANDAI/revell x-wing is a retool/Reboxed AMT ERTL kit from the 80's they look the same but modern tooling and scaling improves the quality and build ability esp for younger modellers along with playability ( diorama display for older builders or collectors)
Looks like a nice kit. I’ve always wanted one of the Halcyon kits. They’re very expensive now that they’re out of production. I may pick up one of these kits through Amazon. Looking forward to seeing your progress Lou. :)
I love modern Asian scale models, they are such a joy to work with! And Aliens! This is just pure awesomeness :) P. S. It is possible to significantly prolog paint life on rubbing surfaces with stuff like Nazca mechanical surfacer and similar. It is difficult to obtain them in US and they are lacquers, but in my experience, they are absolutely amazing for action figure kits. I have kits painted years ago and actively used and they still look quite good.
Two things that might improve this kit are some photoetch mesh designed for armor grills to use on top of the cage, and a 1/12 Formula One seat harness set that would provide fabric straps and photoetch metal adjustors and the central locking unit. They probably used an actual racing harness in the movie. Great job!
with a proper paint wash, the mesh detail is quite nice and a lot less hassle than PE, but the harness could use a little more love. there was also a thinner black strap harness that Ripley wore that is not represented in the kit. This has to be from the opening scene where she's demonstrating her ability because by the end, her shirt was all tore up.
Lou, They went so far as to give you Aluminum rods for the claw Hands , why didn't they include the same for the pistons ? The other thing is they should have given you a photoetch grill for the top of the cage , like the old Halcyon kit had. Still a Beautiful kit worth building.
Great Video, Lou!!! The Good Smile Company makes a 1/150 scale pre-colored manned Soyuz and Booster on the transport train which I have yet to build. Looking forward to many more enjoyable and informational videos! All the Best!!!
Hi Lou. Coser here. As a Polymer Engineer it's likely that the production company don't have the larger, more powerful injection moulders. The force required to inject is based on the 'visible' area of plastic when you look at the tree straight on. Larger trees need more pressure to inject, which in turn requires more pressure to hold the mould halves closed, which requires larger machines. These smaller trees can be run on smaller machines, which are cheaper per machine to run. Love the build, wish I had the space to get one of these.
I used to have the Halcyon kit. The box art depicted artwork of the power loader in action but the Ripley figure's head was hidden behind one of the bars of the cockpit; turned out Halcyon did not had the licence to depict Ripley
What a blast from the past! This is a lovely reworking of the Halcyon Movie Classics loader - with some updates, by the looks of things. The original had a badly sculpted ‘likeness’ of Ms Weaver which, like the Loader, wasn’t articulated. Neither did it have a separate harness piece (it was moulded to the figure). One thing I would point out to you now is the decals on the side - they never had the licence from Caterpillar to use the logo from the movie, so you may want to make your own, or freehand the logo. Looking forward to seeing your progress - I loved building mine. 🤩
yes there is a suspicious and un documented add on for the hip decals that somehow changes the "O" to a "C" i swear, it just fell into place, i don't know how that happened
Well that’ll teach me to comment before watching the whole of the video! Sneaky O/C looks fab. Whole thing does, to be fair. When I did my lights, I used a TinyCylon board and fitted it behind the headrest. With mine not having a hinge, though, I made the cushion magnetic, and housed an easily removable button cell. (Sorry - just excited to see a new one being built)
Looking great lou as always can't wait to see what you decide to go with for the end project as you never seem to stop amazing me with the work you do on them .
Dear Lou, Thank you for the tutorial. At first, I thought to myself too toy like. But after your weathering - boy, does that make a difference! I am looking forward to see how Ellen turns out. Best Wishes Johnny
Very nice build. This appears to be the exact same model that was offered about 15 years ago but it was die-cast metal and came built in the box. It was fully posable as well. I dont recall the name of the company that offered it but it was definately not "Good Smile".The Ripley figure is the same too. I have it sitting in a bin somewhere
Great to see another 1/12 Power loader on the market, hope I can pick this kit up in the UK. I was lucky enough to grab the Halcyon kit and the Queen kit about 6 years back. I have a few videos on my RUclips channel [skyray models] of the diorama and the Power loader with the Ripley figure if you want to take a peek.
Hey Shirley! 😉 You were serious about this kit. Excellent job so far. I was very sceptical about putting a beacon on it after so much construction had already been done but you made a great job of it. The switch triggered by closing the cage is genius! 😁👏 Weathering is excellent and I'm looking forward to seeing what it looks like after the silver dry brushing. Those Mission Models paints look really good and the company has a good reputation, it's just a shame they are so difficult to get this side of the pond. You are so lucky having a shop that stocks so much good stuff so close to you.
the moderoid line has a ton of new IPs from really obscure movies and anime OVAs , i cant wait to get the robocop with jetpack that was anounced recently
Oh, what a great kit! I had to buy it for myself. I've been wanting this for the movie collection. You've made it look so realistic. Would you mind please listing the paints (and colors) and washes you've used in your next description? I'd sure like to mimic what you've done with this kit. Really enjoyed this video Lou, thank you!
Looking great, love the beacon. The Horizon kit was injection moulded with vinyl hoses too, but it was a fixed pose with a lower parts count. Here's a review on youtube, search with xf8jBdK38Xk
This kit has different parts, some different colored sprues and color instructions and it has electronics. Of note are the loader "jaws"on the original Halcyon kit which were moulded in the open position. The Ripley figure looks the same. Unless they did a re-work of some of the parts...it does have many familiar mouldings of the original Halcyon kit.
good smile aka moderoid has been around for a little while. built my first maybe 7 yrs ago. they are heavy into the mecha genre. trees sizes are all over the place with them but typically really enjoyable builds and good opportunities for scratch building some finer details.
The Halcyon kit is extremely unarticulated for a power loader to fight the vinyl xenomorph queen and the Ripley figure is a statue with moulded on harness! That Goodsmile kit is up to their anime figure standard and is so much better, mine i have to cut so much to pose it i'm still hesitant to start! Your kits looking fine but i'm thinking the loader would be composite not steel in the future design, maybe the feat for weight?
It is looking amazing so far, I can't wait to see it finished. Are the black "hoses" actually tubes? If so it might be worth putting some bendable wire in them so that you can pose them to look like they have some weight like real hydraulic hoses, as otherwise they might look a bit toyish with them all sticking straight out in all directions.
The only company I know called "good smile company" is in Japan which are known for nendroid figures. I remember the kit from the 90's but cannot remember the scale.
GSC isn't new and they aren't small. They primarily deal with Anime characters and do a lot of distribution. Hopefully they'll re-pop more Aliens kits.
Louis, how COULD you!? Accusing those poor Japanese kit designers of being "cheap!" Those two foreleg pistons have to be solid because the model is top- and front-heavy. It would just fall over all the time. I trust you will issue an apology for that raw calumny. On the other hand, not running a fifth(?) or sixth(?) color sprue in silver for all that other piston work is the only sign of cheapness on their part I might acknowledge. Possibly, they didn't like the look of the available "silver." I solidly agree that a half-fixed pose is the best approach. Ripley doesn't need to strike a "landing" pose next to her loader. I wonder if Ms Weaver gets a built-up kit for herself. Or did she sign away any rights to, er, anything, back in the day. It was her first movie (I think; certainly big one). I would like to think she has had to strike a new, modern deal for her iconic character. Caterpillar on the other hand, well, I would have said yes for vanity purposes alone. Very neat subject and build, chum.
Hum, I got a discision to make, Now that this kit is widely available the Halcyon kit has drastically dropped in price over at Ebay. It's damn near the same prices as this kit. And after checking out some of the build videos of the Halcyon kit there's a few things I notice. Yes the new kit is posable and the face of Ripley is more accurate than the face of Ripley on the Halcyon, But the game changer for me that will probably make me get the Halcyon instead has to do with the area of the cage above Ripley's head, On the new kit that area is solid plastic, While the Halcyon kit gives you a photo etch screen for that area which frankly makes it way more accurate looking,
Well done, just like you do with, everything you have done.
Better kit than I expected. I remember the Halcyon kit in the 90s.

Your painting and weathering looks great! Much more realistic than just the plastic. Really cool lighting setup!
Lou you are just brilliant in modeling! That siren switch was brilliant! Awesome!

Love the build. That's for sharing.
Looks like the Halycon model
Aliens kits are always cool to build! This powerloader is awesome, definitely need the Alien Queen!

Been thinking about this kit, And after seeing your unboxing, Now i know I gotta have it.
Now just need a 1/12 scale Alien queen to goi with it :)
Hiya Lou. This is a nice long one to watch.
I'm looking forward to getting 'hosed' next week. 😁

Good Smile/Moderoid has a couple of fantastic Robocop kits out

But it's not. This is a new kit. I don't know why folks think this must be some sort of re do .
Great to see another 1/12 Power loader on the market, hope I can pick this kit up in the UK.

don't call me Shirley...

it's all there in the video. I went over the colors I bought
Looking great, love the beacon. The Horizon kit was injection moulded with vinyl hoses too, but it was a fixed pose with a lower parts count. Here's a review on youtube, search with xf8jBdK38Xk
That looks a great kit.
Great video Lou, Good Smile is an awesome Japanese company and you should see the Robocop models you can get.
i saw a picture of the Cain kit i can't wait
I just ordered the supplies for my first ever attempt at scratch building parts...quite frankly to whole idea of doing it scares the crap out of me
This kit has different parts, some different colored sprues and color instructions and it has electronics.

Unless they did a re-work of some of the parts...it does have many familiar mouldings of the original Halcyon kit.
i'll almost guarantee this is not the old vinyl kit.
and the electronics are mine, they didn't come with the kit
Awseome so far!
Holy crap, Batman!
Seriously COOL.
I wonder if there is a mini rotating light?
Ordered one five minutes into your video. Must have.🙂
This was a great scene in the Movie, something I remember vividly from watching that movie. Ripley was Hot.

thats what i'm thinking. wire inside to make the hoses more manageable
Outstanding
The only company I know called "good smile company" is in Japan which are known for nendroid figures.
I remember the kit from the 90's but cannot remember the scale.
Looks like you have the dirt on Ripley.
I like those yellow strobes! Was that from a kit?
hi just found your channel and just wanted to let you know that the GoodSmile companie isn't new but have been around for a while
It reminds me of the Halcyon kit from the 90's.
They modified the original one from Halcyon...the tube placement was a pain
GSC isn't new and they aren't small. They primarily deal with Anime characters and do a lot of distribution. Hopefully they'll re-pop more Aliens kits.
maybe you can add sound effect with tiny speakers to be fixed some where and attached to same battery .
Hi Lou! Did you prime the model before adding Mission model Paint?
No. I painted right over the cleaned plastic
How do you always get those perfect masks for each kit? Does someone sell them?
i make them myself and in most cases, i sell them
Wow! The Halcyon kit had nowhere near as much articulation.
OMG this is expensive! Around £89.99UK! (usually "Out of Stock")
Super cool!
Louis, how COULD you!? Accusing those poor Japanese kit designers of being "cheap!" Those two foreleg pistons have to be solid because the model is top- and front-heavy. Very neat subject and build, chum.
Did you locate a queen?
Google translate app on your phone will use your camera to translate Japanese to english. Super useful for japanese kits and modeling chemicals
ill give that a shot! thanks
wow, the old halcyon kit has nothing on this, just need the Alien Queen...
What the size of the Ellen ripley figure?
shes about 6.5 inches tall
Is it just me or does Ripley look like Uhura?
Hum, I got a discision to make, Now that this kit is widely available the Halcyon kit has drastically dropped in price over at Ebay. It's damn near the same prices as this kit. You know, you could carve that area out on the new kit and make your own mesh with a bit of screen material.
Not sure where you can get it from! But I'm sure I have seen it advertised online somewhere. *before searching for The Good Smile co.
