hey mate thanks for the video. Wondering what's your clearance between the mattress and the roof. Planning to do something similar to this on a x-trail and I just wanna have an idea of the heights I should go for. Thanks
Hey! Sorry man I sold the 4runner a few months back. The bed platform sat flush with the top of the wheel wells. So from there to the roof and subtract the thickness of the mattress. It was too tight for our liking but we still used it all the time and had many great trips.

How tall is the box with out the mattress? Wondering if my 9inch box “planned build” and then mattress will give me NO head room. I am in a sequoia which gives me a little more clearance. Appreciate you letting me know your box height?
The sequoia should definitely help with interior space. Unfortunately I sold the 4runner a while ago. All that I can tell you is that I built it to the same height as the wheel wells.
They are not all the same length. I had to label each leg with a letter/number and mark the bed platform with the same. That way I can keep track of which leg goes where.

Hey! Yeah 3/4 is more than strong enough however it's heavy! I didn't have a single screw pop out a side. If you aren't using torx screws yet I would highly recommend using them. And one of those newer drill drivers, they're awesome. I find that the Torx screws are easier to get started, less wobbling. If you're going to use 3/4 I would try to find ways to lighten it if possible. Drill big holes in panels that aren't seen or something. Maybe do a combination or 1/2 and 3/4. Great build man! Any chance you have the lengths and widths for the top piece in the back and the two hinged pieces that fold forward. I’ve got a 2004 and this will be perfect. Thanks!!
Hey! Sorry I don't have any dimensions, I actually just sold the 4runner. I threw in the bed platform so the new owner has it. If you're going to build one I would say go for it! We loved ours! Only complaint is it gets pretty cramped. Good luck!
Are all of the legs the same size?
They are not all the same length. I had to label each leg with a letter/number and mark the bed platform with the same. That way I can keep track of which leg goes where.
@@wallinkevin thanks for the reply! I had all the wood cut out today (just the top 3 pieces) and I made them too wide to fit through the trunk so will be adjusting tomorrow. I got the bed today, I can’t wait to have the set up functional
Dude this is so legit
Question? I wanna do a build like that in my 99 dodge Durango and do you have 3rd seating in those? And also how did you do the screw pegs? I really like that idea since I have 3 kids kinda getting rid of my 3rd row wouldn't be an option! Thanks for any input 😊
My 4runner does not have a 3rd row seat. I've seen some 4runners that do though. I'm sure you could do something similar in the durango!
I used hanger bolts like these:
www.homedepot.com/p/1-4-in-20-tpi-x-2-in-Coarse-Standard-Steel-Plain-Hanger-Bolts-4-Pack-809321/204273740
Just drill a pilot hole in the leg, then on the hanger bolt you tighten two nuts together, then you can drive the stud or hanger bolt into the leg. Just Google jam nut and you can figure it out. Pretty simple.
To attach the leg assembly to the plywood I used these tee nuts:
www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-4-in-20-Zinc-Plated-Tee-Nut-4-Pack-802301/204274194?MERCH=REC-homepagehorizontal1_rrNA-204274194--N
Simply drill a hole where you want the leg and tap in one of those nuts. Hope this helps!
@@wallinkevin awesome thanks!! I really like your build set!!
Question for you buddy. On our 4th gens, the folded down back seat creates an incline in the back platform. Does your design level out the platform, or does it incline as well? Just curious, and thank you for a great video and design! Cheers mate.
Im guessing he made the screw-in legs different sizes to accommodate the incline.
Looks comfy
awesome ! very good job
Nice build.😎👍
Thanks!
Great video. I’m going to do something similar for mine. Did you use tee nuts to accept the hangar bolts, or do you just screw the legs straight into the wood?
Great question, yes I used t nuts to thread the hanger bolts into.
Do you have design schematics on this build?
Sorry but I don't.
What did you use to anchor?
Sorry I didn't think about showing that in much detail. Basically it's just the same way most everyone else doing. Here's a picture of someone else's build that shows what it looks like. Hope this helps.

@@wallinkevin Thanks! I've been looking through a lot of videos but hadn't seen one that really showed the turnbuckle or how it was attached. That was helpful.
I have seen a lot of videos but your set up is perfect!! Thanks for sharing!!! Sub from me!!! Keep it up my friend!!!!! 👍👍👍
Super clever!
Nice Job.
Good build. What year is your 4runner? '08?
Thanks, Yep 2008
Where did you get the matrice?
This is the one I used! www.amazon.com/dp/B01INZBCJG?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Pretty cool my dude
How do you close the hatch once in? Haven’t found a good way yet in mine.
I love this build! Do you happen to have a copy of plans for sale?
Thank you! Unfortunately I do not... And I no longer have the 4Runner. :-(
Very very nice, thanks for sharing
Where did you get the pegs from?
I just bought this stuff and cut it to length. www.homedepot.com/p/6416U-1-in-x-1-in-x-48-in-Pine-Round-Dowel-10001808/203334068
Good video! Thanks
Hello. I'm looking to do this for my 5th Gen. Do you feel this was sturdy enough with 3/4inch? Any problems with screws messing up the boards if they didn't go in straight? Thanks for this.
Glad you found the video useful. Good luck!
@@wallinkevin thanks so much. That is helpful!
@@wallinkevin have you built the new one? Will you do a video of that one?
@@liberatingleash My wife and I decided to sell the 4Runner, so no we won't be doing another. However we are hoping to get a van of some sort and do a modest build in that. We've enjoyed traveling and sleeping in our 4Runner so much we decided to sell it for something that offers a little more interior space. Yes I plan on filming van stuff when the day comes.
@@wallinkevin wonderful. Good luck!
Awesome
Great ! You rock brother
Simple and effective thanks
Do you have a link to the hinges you have or did you just get them at like Home Depot? I'm interested in doing that folding design as well.
Great video, very cool. Where do you store the mattress in the vehicle while you are driving?
I think the mattress would fit in the back if it were folded up but I haven't tried it yet. I usually just have it stored at home when not in use.
How’s it while cooking and fumes? Any trouble with the cab getting smells??
Did you do this with the rear cargo deck in, or did you take it out?
I did remove the rear cargo deck. It's an easy two bolts if I remember correctly.
What size is your mattress? I see a ton on amazon that look similar but don't want to have to cut it.
It's a full size mattress. I only trimmed off maybe 3 inches or so. Super easy with a bread knife. If the rear seat bottoms were removed from the vehicle the mattress wouldn't need to be trimmed. This is the matress we used. If I were to do it over I would try to find a thinner mattress. Every inch matters in such a small space.

can you post all the dimensions of this build.
I wish I could but I sold the 4Runner and the new owner took the bed system with!
How tall is the box?
Excellent
