In 1917 Eino Leino, Finnish poet, wrote a poem for Ukraine. At this time Ukraine served as the ultimate icon of freedom and rebellion against oppression- a role model for nations striving for independence.
To this day Ukraine keeps inspiring its neighbors. This should not be forgotten.

Eino Leino "Terve Ukraina"
" Terve Ukraina! Kunnias soikoon,Huutona huomenen valkenevan!Voimasi, lempesi leimaus voikoonvaatia, laatia maan vapahan!Uljas Ukraina! Nyt älä horju!Kerran se koittaa kansojen koi.Tyynenä, vankkana vaarasi torju,tai jos on tarpehen, niin salamoi!Kaunis Ukraina, kansojen suola!Sulla on lippu ja meillä on tie.Myötäs on myrskyssä Suomi ja Puola,Myös Viro, Lätti ja Liettua lie.Eespäin, Ukraina! Jännitä jousta,valkaise tie tasavaltaisen työn!" Eino Leino 29.6.1917
"Gegrüßet seist du, Ukraine! Zu deiner Ehr´ erklinge
der Ruf des erwachenden Morgens!
Deine Macht, das Lodern deiner Liebe möge
ein freies Land fordern und festigen!
Unglaubliche Ukraine! Wanke nun nicht!
Einmal geht der Morgenstern der Völker auf.
Still und stark erwehrst du dich Gefahren,
Der Moment der Völker Russlands ist da, aufzustehen;
die Fesseln der Zarennacht zu zersprengen.
Glänze; Ukraine! Biege deinen Bogen,
erhelle den Weg zur Republik!"

Let's make it 1000 years. There is saying in finnish that goes something like this: Only good thing that comes from east is sunrise.
@@oninaru That's true. Finnish lion treads a curved saber and attacks with a straight line. However, the coat of arms is from the 16th century and the heritage of Gustav (Vaasa). It can be found e.g. from the wall of the Swedish church. But to be honest, the Russians are repeating their inferiority complex because of the idiosyncrasy of the idiot.

Nocturne
Hark! My ears are catching corncrake’s clicking,
Silver moonlight shines on cobhead corn;
Summer evening’s blessing me, enriching,
Valley’s wreaths of smoky slash and burn.
Neither joying I, nor grieve I, mournful;
But for forest’s darkness am I yearnful,
Rose-gilt clouds the day’s protracted ending,
Windy sleeping hill o’er all extending,
Fragrant twinflower, shortening, lingering shade;
These the things from which my heart-song’s made.
Lady June-July, for you I’m singing,
Great the silence of my ardent heart,
Merry music make, for faith is mounting,
Verdant wreath of oak eternal start.
Foolish errands now I’ll make no longer,
Fortune blessèd hands will grasp the stronger;
Rippled pool of circles now decreasing;
Time has ceased and weathervane is sleeping;
Stretches road at twilit end of day,
Bound for home unknown, I take its way.

Suomen kielen sanoissa on voimaa. "Tervehdys!" on puhekielessä lyhentynyt muotoon "terve!"

@@RockerFinland Sadly, over 100 years ago it turned out to be just a beautiful dream (a prophecy perhaps?) The bitter Polish-Ukrainian War over the ethnicity mixed lands, especially the city of Lwów/Lviv (majority Polish back then), started in 1918 even before the independent Polish state officially appeared. Later Poles and Ukrainians actually did fight together against the Bolsheviks but the Peace of Riga in 1921 felt like a betrayal to Ukrainians.
There's a lot of complicated and at times very bloody and ugly history between our peoples (BTW I recommend checking the History Hustle channel for more details) but the current tragedy is perhaps bringing us closer than ever.
I just realized that in my original comment I wrote 'freedom' twice in the English version of the motto 'For our freedom and yours!', which is not great, grammatically and especially stylistically, but it gives me a pretext to add that the motto itself has a pretty interesting history (you can google it).

It's the least we can do. Ukraine is paying a terrible price for dispelling the illusions Europe had of Russia (I myself often thought of Dostojevsky when I should have thought of Ivan the Terrible), and giving us time not only to rearm, but also wean ourselves off their energy. This is old finnish and some of the translation is even wrong, because it was done in haste. But if you want to memorise it, the word "kauhtuvien" actually refers to "those being aggrovated, angered, feeling anger"- not "fading away". Today the word is only used to describe something fading away, the old meaning for the word and intended in the poem is something else.

Hold fast, all in our democratic family of nations, against the spirit of autocracy which has been on the rise. A democracy based on free speech an independent judicial system and the rule of law may not be perfect,but it sure is better to what we see in Russia. What we see in Ukraine today mirrors the German invasion of Poland in 1939. After years of appeasement, democratic France and Great Britain bit the bullet, and went all out to take out the aggressive Nazis. Call Putin's bluff and threats on nuclearism, take the pain and humble Putin to the point that the Russians throw him out. We may then see a second chance for democracy in Russia! The Russian man on the street deserves what we in the west so often take for granted.

The poem was written 100 years ago, when we were all connected still. Now, 100 years later, this inherited trauma blooms up in all the countries that it concerns. And that's why you see such action in Poland and so many doors opening for Ukrainians, for instance, which is a neighboring country that has received the most of the refugees. You see Lithuanian medics rush to go help Ukraine, Latvia has set up a bunch of centers for temporary care of pets of refugees. All of the countries are open for ukrainian refugees. And all of the countries have Ukrainian men in them, who immediately drop their mundane and travel home to help in the fight of their own existence. It's very, very dramatic.

Suomi culture and art are always astonishing🤍💙 Слава Украïнi! Once this will be ended, we' ll be there for the reconstruction. We all owe you our liberty and our life 🧛🏻♀️💙💛
It's my first time to heard anything in Finish language ... Honestly,sounds to me like Greek ... Slava Ukrajini :)
Slava Ukraini! The Finnish people fully support you and your right to have a free, democratic country! Putin thinks he can just take what he wants but you're proving him wrong!
Whoever knows the singer, please give compliments to her for amazinging performance and thanks for her skills and heart.
The singer is informed. Thank you!
Thanks, Sara for this beautiful song, video and your soulful voice. And you practically did it in a day! You are an excellent example of the new European generation with humanity, solidarity and genuine social responsibility! I have sent it to the Ukrainian ambassador to Helsinki and asked her to distribute it to her people, including her President.
We are awaiting a Ukrainian translation, which is in progress, I am told.
Beatiful people in Ukraina❤️❤️ Greeting from Finland Heroyam Slava
It seems so unbelievably fantastic, how accurately this poet predicted, which countries spent most share of their military budget to help Ukraine. Especially Baltics, who donated almost 1/3 of their military expenses.
The only thing he predicted wrong is that russian tribes now are purified slaves, everyone who tried to rebel was eliminated throughout soviet era.
I'm ukrainian, and I couldn't understand a single word from this song (if it wasn't for translation), yet the sound of it, and the wording seemed so familiar somehow, and raised such strong emotions, that I'm starting to question our nation's origin. Very strange feeling of something painfully well known in this song.
Truth said, that music is universal language.
The language is Finnish, so it would be quite strange if you understood it, as Ukrainian. However, we do have one word in common: Talkoo (fin) and Toloka (Ukr). I don't know many other cultures that do anything like this- because it takes solidarity, coordination and trust. A Ukrainian will understand this.
@@99stories99 not one ;) We also have sininen and synii which means blue in Ukrainian. I'm sure there are a lot of words common for our languages ;)
Obviously the singer is not a Finn, e.g., she mispronounces the opening word "terve" (it's "ter-ve", not "terrr-ve"). Maybe is an Ukrainian or Russian.
Yes, but I believe that word Finnish copied from slavic ;)
Well the Kyivan Rus. Finns, Swedes and Ukrainians have a common history.
Ruhm der Ukraine! 🇩🇪
Kunnia Ukrainalle! 🇫🇮

Eino leino was propably a greatest poet a whole finland history. Slawa ukrain 💪✊🇺🇦🇫🇮
Eino Leino ja L. Onerva. Kummatkin.
Hello 99 stories, this piece of music on the poem is wonderful. Answering my latest comment you want to spread Eino Leinos poem. Today I read it on a beneficial concert for ukraine in switzerland. With musicians from Japan, Czechia, Poland, Austria and Ukraine. Nobody knew the poem before and all loved it. May help raise money and minds. Thank you!"
There have been many versions made of the poem now, which I think is great. Thank you for sharing this information- I didn't know about the concerts. I will check them out.

@Jussi Hippi Ei täällä raukoilla rajoilla tarvi miettiä vanheneeko runon sanoma 100 vuodessa. Sama ikuinen vihollinen on Puolasta Lappiin uhkaamassa vapaita ihmisiä.
