This is one of her all-time best songs. Moody, atmospheric, incredible lyricism and story-telling, layered background vocals. Stunning work.
exactly
This and Breakdown are peak Mariah. She produced and wrote. She funded this music video herself when her label wouldn’t let her.
“It wasn’t raining yet.” One of the best opening lyrics ever in my opinion.
She wrote this song about a date she had with Derek Jeter. She's singing exactly what happened between them and how she felt about it all. She explained it in her book.
Yess!!! “The Roof” is def top 5 Mariah tracks!
Her most underrated song imo. That was a Mob Deep sample. The video is about reminiscing and takes us back to the 70's and 80's. Love the video treatment. This is one of her songs I often go back to because there's a nostalgia quality about it but it's done so well.
Mariah has quite a few songs like this. It was no surprise at all she would use this Mobb Deep sample and get the duo themselves to be on the track. She’s that girl! 💅🏾
…R.I.P. Prodigy ♥️🙏🏾♥️
Yesss her song Givin Me Life is a fave and hidden gem.
The Mariah Wall of Sound is EVERYTHING! Always listen to her songs with lyrics!!
Back in the 80’s a lot of breakdancers in NY were Puerto Rican, Dominican and Black. The video is a flashback to that time and her crush. One of the airbrushed sweatshirts said 1983. In the early 80’s it was feathered hair and Sergio Valente, Gloria Vanderbilt or Jordache jeans.
@@caycecm02 Yeeessss! Baby the Sergio’s were EVERYTHING!
One of the comments on the video, describes this video perfectly…”A love letter to New York”. A great encapsulation..it parallels the feelings she sings of in relation to the man who made her feel them.
This my favorite song of all time😭😭
Mariah has had many hits. This is probably one of my top 3 songs. It shows her versatility better than any of her hits. I love the story, the vocals, the melody....superb.
According to her memoir, the concept stemmed from her brief romance with Derek Jeter
My favorite Mariah song . The lyrics are insane
This is one of my fav songs. She definitely based this on a real experience. This beauty of the song is her voice telling the story/lyrics and the feeling of nostalgia for young love.
Omg yes 🙌🏾 Thank you to the fellow lamb who requested this.
FYI, that was indeed the Dominican flag and Mariah isn’t Dominican. This video was an ode to early-mid 1980s NYC, which had a big influence on Mariah. I think the flag was just a part of that tribute to NYC, since there is a large Dominican community there.
She’s also talked about how she used to travel to NYC as a teen to do a lot of demos and background singing. She eventually moved there after she graduated high school and she got her Sony record deal at 18.
Unfortunately, The Roof was never made a single because of creative differences and sabotage from her abusive ex-husband Tommy Mottola (the record head of Sony in the 90s/early 2000s). It’s still a fan favorite (as well one of Mariah’s) and Mariah’s re-recorded this as a collab with Brandy recently.
Regardless, the Butterfly album is arguably her magnum opus and most transformative. It really was the first album where she had full creative control without Tommy’s abuse and manipulation.
I love Mariah’s R&B/Hip Hop catalog
Watching your reviews I see how siloed culture is and how certain cultural moments are shared amongst groups. This is a signature sound that Mariah created. This song is beloved by her fans for its unique imagery and storytelling. This song is a snapshot of a moment where she longs for a person she once loved. She rides in her limo on a rainy night and it takes her back in time to the early 80’s where she recalls a special time.
Absolutely right! It’s beautiful imagery and this is a signature sound of many for Mariah Carey.
The harmonies, the beat and the lyrics in this sooong!!!!!
butterfly is often regarded as one of her best albums
❤😊 yasss this is my favorite album by her! No skips!! Thank you to the person requesting this! Thank you from a fellow lamb
The reason this song is so popular is the backstory and especially the beautiful imagery in the lyrics she wrote. It’s considered some of her best work lyrically.
We getting some Breakdown? That has to be one of my fav Mimi songs
Mine too!!!
Yes all things mariah the queen of remixes
@@sunofthegoddess1617 Period!
One of her best songs !! Mariah is incredible
Ooohhhhhh! This is one of my favorites by Mariah! The Mobb Deep sample is just (sigh!) chef's kiss! 👌🏾💋
Thank you so much for suggestions by era. Butterfly was her first biggest revolution of her career. This was like her true self that long-awaited to expose. Her catalogue is too good, her pen games and her productions are god tier.
As a fan, we are so proud to show you all her legacy even some of them are not label's favourites.
Finally!!! we needed more Mariah reactions !!!
Omggg no way! I was going to comment for you guys to do Mariah week 2 yesterday but ended up commenting for a live Mariah week instead!! So happy you're doing this though butterfly is her own favourite album of hers.
The whole album got great lyrics
To answer you question, the Butterfly album is considered as her Magnum Opus. This era is very pivotal to her career as this is where she transitioned as an artist and as a human. Prior to this, she was heavily controlled and abused by her husband who was also the CEO of her label she's in. In 1997 (iirc) they divorced and she's finally free to decide how she dresses, how she sounds, and basically how she will be as an artist which she has always fought for. She started leaning more to her roots which is rnb/hiphop rather than the usual ballads.
The butterfly has become Mariah's symbol eversince. If you have watched Miley's acceptance on the last Grammy's, her speech was a story about a butterfly which she said she told because Mariah was there. She was referencing this album
I don’t know if anyone mentioned it but she’s describing a specific night that she actually experienced.
The idea came to her during a drive in New York in the rain, and Mobb Deep's Shook Ones (Part II) was playing on the radio. That’s why their song is sampled on this song and also why they are the rappers that are being featured here. And that’s also why she’s seen in a car in the rain in this music video.
This is probably one of her best creations, vocally, lyrically, and visually.
I mean we all know how mariah carey is the queen of everything she is music period lambily for LiFE👑👑👑👑
Amazing singer... We ❤ Mariah
MARIAH CAREY YASSSS BUTTERFLY CHANGED MY LIFE
Yall should do a Mariah Carey LIVE week!!😫 my recommendations are…
-Hero live at Tokyo Dome 1996
-Make it Happen live at Madison Square Garden 1995
-If It’s Over live at the Grammys 1992
-Vanishing SNL rehearsal 1990
-Vision of love live at Tokyo Dome 1996
I love this album so much. I could listen to this album from start to finish, no skips.
This song is sexy man! I love the "... and so we finished the Moet, started feeling liberated" LOL
A fantastic singer who redefined female singing standards during the 90s
Mariah in the rain is fire, I once saw her live in Eurodisney and it was pouring rain, and the stage didnt have a roof….I thought she would cancel, but she just came up and did her whole set while getting soaking wet, she was in such a good mood too and kept on making jokes
I juuuuust finished the first Mariah Week you did so seeing this uploaded now is very pleasing to me since Butterfly is my all time favorite Mariah album so thank you for dedicating a week for this and massive thanks to the donor. Looking forward to it
This song grows on you. I didn’t quite like it in the beginning but found myself grooving by the end.
I swear I cant help but picture Joe in a red mankini and roller skates !
My favorite song. Everrrrrrr (literally)
So excited for this!! Hope you guys react to Breakdown
Whoever paid for the queennn. Thank youuu!!! I already know breakdown and honey are comingg.
Oh this is gonna be a good week. I know without knowing what’s on the list bc this whole album is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥…
This song is def one my personal favorites! Love the version she did with Brandy too! 🥰
I wished you were also looking at the lyrics of her songs, which she writes by the way. This is one of her best pen game! She is a Master and a Genius!
Hot take but I think this reaction would’ve blown your mind more without the video. This song is all about the mood and the lyrics. It’s very atmospheric. 🥰
100% agreed
The Dominican flag would be an easter egg because she was dating Derek Jeter and also her muse for this song. The Roof is honestly one of the greatest songs ever made. Melodically and Lyrically!
This song is based off her real life experience of her & Derek Jeter literally making out on a rooftop, she talked about it in her memoir.
It’s a Dominican flag 🇩🇴 but she’s Venezuelan-African, Irish lamb for life 🦋
I've always waited for another Mariah week!! She has a lot of hits (and hidden gems!) that you'd be needing more weeks to cover them all
Mariah ❤❤❤
but people would be so surprised to hear people talk about Mariah really having the idea of how a music or song is going to be produced and the melody and rhythm.. people don't realize that.. she is the architect of modern pop a lot of music professionals and pros said that...
Love this song!
All time favourite Mariah song so glad you reacted to this 🔥 🙌
The beat to this song is sampled from Shook Ones Pt2 by Mobb Deep. Mobb Deep and Big Noyd are the rappers on the record towards the end of the video/song. The video is basically supposed to be Mariah reminiscing, so all the scenes with just her by herself is the present day, and all the scenes were she is at the party on the roof with the feathered hair are supposed to have taken place in the past.
Keep doing Mariah
Yessss! Great choice! You two looked hypnotised listening to it haha!
Looove this song so much I had to use the stupid crying emoji. Any time anyone is introduced to this song I'm just gagging bc I love it so much. Her vocals on this Mobb Deep track, which is also a classic, are sublime. Such a low-key record (it's based on Derek Jeter btw), yet so nostalgic of the late 90s. And she perfectly blended her ballads with pop/r&b vocals and hip hop-centric tracks.
The video is totally a story moment, you just need to read the lyrics because it goes with it perfectly. The lyrics drive the story here.
I’m screaming
I looooove "the roof"!
this song is just wow
More Mariah please!
This is when she started following Mary j bliges lead in singing over hip hops tracks, Mary didn't first created the infusion for woman, and made it popular then Mariah didn't and took it to the pop masses! One of my fave songs off the album after the one with bone thugs.
Mariahs grand parents switched their last name after they migrated from Venezuela, her true Family name is Nuñez. Please do The Emancipation of Mimi too
She’s singing about Derek Jeter! They were together!
In the video she shows de diversity of people living in NY ! So that's why the dominican flag is in there
She’s actually going “back in time” to November of 96 and this song is from 97.
Finally mariah carey again!!!😅❤❤😊
This album is often credited as the first pop/hip-hop crossover album.
Mariah and her mom have a Christmas song together “ oh come all ye faithful” watch the live it’s soo good
This song was about a night she spent with Derek Jeter while separated from her ex Sony Tony lol
STOPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP I HAVE BEEN WAITINT FOR THIS HAHAKSM
DMENDNDMLEMDMRMELR BEST MARIAH ALBUM EVER
Boombox was probably looked at as so futuristic at that time only to be viewed as something ancient today. 😂

This was her divorce from that mad man album all hell broke loose 😂😂😂😂 my all time favorite album
Mariah 🎉
❤❤❤❤❤ Mariah ❤❤❤❤
Mariah Carey is of miced heritage. Her mother Irish American and her dad Black Venezuelan.
Her dad is also African American
This is a masterpiece. I’m writing this before seeing your reaction. If you don’t like this song I will cry lol
If you paid attention to the lyrics you would understand the story of the video
The concept is also based on her short lived romance with Derek Jeter according to her memoir
Yeah ima need the honey bad boys remix from you guys
Thank god for Derek jeter! This song is about their first date
❤
So the song is a true story that happend to her. I would incourage you to listen to her memoirs on amazon
She’s black and Irish….mom is Irish and dad is black and Venezuelan. Dad last name is Carey
Her grandfathers last name was Nunez
Do you know she directed that video?
The rap is only in the music video version by the way
thats def the dominican flag, de lo mio ajjajajaja
The Video takes place in 1983.
Derek Jeter inspired this one when they were making sweet light skinned love 🥰
This was when Mariah was singing heavily over legendary hip hop beats. This one features the group Mobb Deep and their hit, Shook Ones.
😂😂😂
@@inchargeofthegirls You stooopid! 🤣
Please, react to others songs by Christina Aguilera. Ballads ones, like Bound To You, I Turn to You, The Voice Within
