  • Today I'm visiting the Starrucca Viaduct in Pennsylvania. It was built by the Erie Railroad between 1847 and 1848 and is still in service to this very day. I also recreate some old photos of the viaduct including an iconic painting of the viaduct.

It is interesting to see where the stone was Quarried. They had a bridge across the creek to get the stone out, by rail. it is above the bridge for Starrucca Creek just above the turn of the creek in the gorge. (Summertime it is full of rattle snakes there.) The other side of the bridge has a door going into the abutment. I know who owns that quarry location and seeing how they go the bridge over the creek above the gorge and where they quarried was interesting.

I just visited the viaduct, which is awesome. Once home, I discovered your video and found it very helpful. I had been wondering about the Cropsey painting and its viewpoint. Thanks for doing the research to answer that question! Really enjoyed the Before and Now picture comparisons! Great video!

That is a wonderful area of America you live in, for discovering "before and after" views of Railroading sites. As an "Original Transcon RR" fan, I go to sites off the beaten path, on the UP/CPRR ROW's, and study books relating to that subject, since we live on other side of country. The most spectacular view is the 7000 altitude + Summit Tunnel, Donner Pass...and the effort to blow thru it 1865-67...the last obstacle of Theodore Judah's Survey's back then. It is a walking area now, and Donner Lake a couple of thousand feet below. There are videos showing the walk thru. Thanks, and thoroughly enjoy your activities. 😃 PS...subscribed.

Thanks for posting this quick visit. I thought maybe you were going to wait around for a train, but I guess that could be a few hours (or days) sometimes.

Very nice video and thank you for sharing, as I have never been able to personally see the Starrucca Viaduct but I really enjoyed the before and after photographs. I assume the road you drove under the viaduct was where the D&H railroad tracks used to be? Also, in the Cropsey painting you featured, what is the arched viaduct before the Starrucca Viaduct? Thank you. John

Great video. I really appreciate the old/current photos. I looked for the large protruding rock point the two boys/men were sitting on in the painting; but your view just went down. Was there any rock ledge you saw in your foreground making the current photo? Project your voice with confidence, you sound fine, just a little low volume.

I looked for something like a rock but couldn't find anything, so I just went as close as I could to what I saw on the painting. Thanks for pointing out the voice thing, I'll work on that

Less than 30 seconds in. Jeep wave.
I don't live to far from this and need to go visit and take some more photos. I used to travel through there for work

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to pick up on the Jeep wave...
