Emotional songs to lift up emotions and transform them better..😍😍
This song is a perfect example of the #1 thing synth/retrowave are getting right more than anything else. Every major song release on mainstream radio sounds like one of two or three things. They either all use the same up tempo beat, or chord progression or lyrical theme and they just pump out 25 similar sounding songs at a time and regurgitate a trope until it's dead. everything in Synth/Retrowave sounds like the things the mainstream discarded from the 80's to the mid 90's. Ballads, songs about more than just dancing in a club or getting drunk or getting in a fight. Deeper lyrics, a wider variety of beats, a more serious attention to the overall impression the listener gets of the emotion behind the song.
It's really sad to see what the mainstream has become, but this is the first movement in music I've cared deeply about since I was 11 years old finding Nirvana and Alice in Chains in the early 90's. That's how serious the divergence has been with the mainstream away from SERIOUS SONGWRITING AND COMPOSITION. Say what you want about all the digitized synth sounds, but it's being used to create ART, not pre-packaged BS meant to sell a bunch of copies and fade away in the memory. These songs stick with you. They leave a mark. That's the best anyone can hope for from music. This IS THE REAL MUSIC us 'Boomers' have been asking for!
There's always exceptions to any rule. For example what Bruno Mars did with Silk Sonic in a lot of ways mirrors what Synthwave has done. It renewed an interest in a long lost sound while freshening it up to current times. In Bruno's case, funk and old R&B mixed with modern lyrical choices and beats. And obviously Synthwave and Retrowave have taken elements lost from the 80's to early 90's mainstream pop genres and interwoven those with modern EDM to create something that feels so familiar yet so fresh and new. Call it nostalgia baiting or whatever you want, I call it recognizing how stagnant the current mainstream is, and purposefully searching for something different than the Status Quo.
I can totally understand you point, Synthwave and Retrowave just have a different feel to them indeed.

I discovered The Motion Epic this year. And since then, I’ve fallen in love with so many of their songs. They hit different when u can relate. I credit The Midnight for bringing a lot of people to the Synthwave scene, but I much prefer artists like The Motion Epic. Love all their work with Max Cruise also. Another good album u should maybe delve into is Star Cassette’s 2022 album. A lot of bangers on that. I’d love to see ur reaction to some of them.
