- The other day Rick Beato called me into the studio to play guitar and bass on a few songs for a video, it turned out to be a lot more work that anticipated but was a ton of fun! Here's how The Top 20 Drum Fills Of All Time video was made!

Only a drummer would introduce himself and not say his name.
You haven't met the bass player yet...
No, I've done that from time to time. I play guitar. Maybe I need to switch.
Was just kidding about drummers, I've done it too.
@@richardmckrell4899 I thought it was funny. I like drummer jokes.
I, as a drummer, take that as a full compliment
*as all drummers do*
Listening the sound of your monitor speakers being captured by a camera's microphone, through 10$ earpones, and those drum sounds sound awesome.
Papa Beato looking like a disappointed father in the thumbnail.
"I am disappoint" meme could be relaunched, with this face
A lot of Rick faces would be good for a meme.
To me he looked like the looming spectre that confused Rhett. 😄💖
@@rhodigian Watch his video about creepy/scary music, there is A LOT of material. The glint in his eye at times...
To me he looked like "Fuck up one more time and I will snap your neck!"

2:21 green earrings is one of my favorite steely songs 🙌
Legendary piece of music there!
Great companion piece to Rick's Top 20 drum fills vid. Btw just heard Mary Spenders new release off her new EP and really enjoyed the work you did on the song.
Great video! Shout out to Rick!!!
Just watched Rick's side of this, so this is cool to watch!
I dug the debate about the Stairway timing.
That fanfare part of Stairway is tricky for sure....
Why does rick look so menacing in the thumbnail 💀
just rewatched this cuz of "Yeah but he is not yelling" =))) so funny
He certainly has a nice studio! But hey man, I felt the same way with Silent Lucidity for a while catching that beginning timing. It goes from 4/4 to 7/8, to 4/4 to 7/8 timing over and over for like the 1st 1:15 seconds of the song, and it was a bitch. You miss one note and you're screwed.
George fludas is your guy for Bonham
We all have our limitations. I for one never managed to play the heavily syncopated break in King Crimson's 21st Century Schizoid Man. Congratulations to anybody who gets through that particular musical assault.
There is a lot that goes into Rick videos and yours! I didn't know you did a sort of behind the scenes shoot and actually helped on guitars. Now if you could get Dave to start a channel about fixing guitars that would complete the trifecta! Great work Rhett!
finally a guitarist tha doesnt use a pick on bass
Rick's and Rhett's videos are so legendary and of high quality in terms of production and content! Great work here, and I shall call this simply Video-ception haha
agree!!!
@@eduardoinnamorato8990 Ahh definitely my man!
Yeap. 🙂
I keep seeing this ceiling and wondering why it's so low... and then I remember Rhett is like 8 feet tall.
Ha! I watch your videos.
Just watch the rick beato’s video straight after this. Well done Rhett all your parts sounded really spot on. Loved the Jimi Hendrix one. 😀 greetings from UK
“I know that makes sense mathematically but..”😂 on stairway count.
Nice to see Rick’s complete studio. Thanks Rhett!
You have a better job than me.
You have better gear that me, so we’re even lol

Watching people nerd out about music is so cool.
I feel like you should have red hair. You're the only person I've ever seen that looks like they have red hair, but doesn't.
I didn't realize how much time and talent Rick put into his videos!
and then you realize that after all that hard work and man hours put into the videos they get demonetized by greedy assholes
re: Stairway
That section is all 4/4 starting on "1 e &" with a bunch of hits on upbeats, but it all stays in 4. Check out the live version on Song Remains the Same - Bonham keeps time on the hi-hats and it all fits. No 3/8 necessary!
Wait for real for real?! I thought he was keeping it on the snare, but keeping on the hi hat would definitely help him feel that shit, lmao
I'm glad there are some of us out here who realize thats in 4/4 lol.
Ha! Totally. I was watching them counting it out and just resting/not counting on the 4: "It's da, da, da - pause -, da, da, da - pause - da, da, da, dum...." as if, because he doesn't strike a drum on all four beats of the measure, it's in, uh, "3/4."
It's called a "REST," guys. It still counts as a beat, though....
Eman Emantsal
I would’ve said let’s just go play the shit, tell me where to come in.
that was quite satisfying to see those guys not getting it. LOL
The amount of work is crazy. Appreciate you guys making content!
Yeah I really enjoy those videos from Rick. I had no clue that they took days to make. Of course I am amazed that most of the time it's just Rick and one other musician to do it all.
Just got done watching the Beato video and now get to see Rhett's behind the scenes video, excellent!
"She Said, She Said" is my favorite Beatles song to play on guitar. Ringo was brilliant on that track!
It's my go to track when ever someone says "Ringo wasn't the best drummer in the Beatles". He might not be, but he turned up that day!
@@kevinmagee8192 Danny Carey said the fills on A Day in the Life prove that anyone who says Ringo sucked is an idiot.
I swear you set the bar for behind the scenes vlogs!! Cheers Rhett!!
The stairway interlude is just straight 4/4 time from start to finish. The timing is off, but it works out well. The first guitar strum on the Dsus2 is the 1. Just count from there and you’re good to go.👍❤️
You're right, that strum is the first note of the 1st 4/4 bar. You have to deal with syncopation all the time but in the last bar before the Page solo. This part seems easy but takes a bit of practice to figure the rhythm.
Exactly! There’s a video on yt where someone explains it really well.
There's also a "Where's the F-ing Beat" video on Richie Castellano's channel for this. :)
Jake at Signal Music does a pretty good job explaining it as well
Awesome video Rhett! I just finished watching Rick's video and this was the next video in the queue. Very interesting to see how you guys put this stuff together. Keep it up, the content is great!
Holy shit, Rhett! What a treat! Just came over from Rick's place. Fantastic job! Thanks for the insiders look at the workings in the lair! Loved every second! Great work!
Peace and Love
is it me or is the link to Rick's video NOT "in the description below"? I looked on his channel and can't figure out which vid these songs are in...
5:20 onwards is like a scene from spinal tap
This drummer is fricking awesome. It would make a hell of a band with rick rett jd and les
I love how technical music is, but it’s all over my head. I should have stayed in band in school.
Just read a textbook. From what I've seen talking to former high school band kids, they seem to not be taught all that much theory. If they know a lot they either studied on their own or learned later.
Awesome vid- it’s definitely deceiving how much goes into these
I can't find Rick's video for the life of me.. :(
12:30 am ramblings.
Honestly, I've never seen a video like this before and I've been looking at studio clips for a long time. I'd imagine this is the closest to being there. Good Job!
P.S. You make that Jazz bass look like a baritone guitar.
P.P.S. Is there a template to the work you guys do? Some process or series of steps or do you always have to adapt as you go and make thinks iteratively and then it feels like it's more work...or is it a combination? From the looks of it it seems that video took like 3 to 7 hrs to get made.
I like seeing that even skilled guitarists having those struggle moments on bits that are seemingly easy (sometimes deceptively). Not because it shows playing weakness but because it shows those folks with less experience (ie - beginners for instance) that playing isn't a magic trick but a skill to develop. The second song I ever learned on guitar lo many decades ago was Black Dog (Crazy? I was dumb enough to not realize it was a really hard song....). Even today, if I'm not playing along with the song, I'll rush that bad boy. Great video Rhett!
You’re disappointing rick, not a good look.
Rick should beat him like an asian father beats his kid when he gets an A minus
1:47
damn thats one strong handshake lmao
Rhett, tv should be this good.
Man.... how big is that studio.... I can't even afford to rent a bathroom..
Catch you all in the next one.
*There is no Plan B.*
So ridiculous that you can't play three seconds of a recorded song without getting blocked and have to have artists perform those parts just to make a video.
I would love to have a mentor like beato. You're so lucky Rhett
We all wish we had Rick’s house and Gear.
Well, as a starting point, I would be glad to have 10% of Rick's and Rhett's talent and perseverance 😎
Arnd Gronenberg Yep
Led Zep - Stairway : "Tadada". The "Ta" of the first "Tadada" is on the beat (as opposed to most thinking the last "da" is).
That's my theory and I'm sticking to it. ;)
P.S: I should have read the comments before posting this. :D
I think I like this more than I liked Ricks video, if that's possible !!!
David Anthony Haha! It was fun watching it :)
Don't feel bad about getting Bonham's part figured out. Apparently he had a miserable time getting Black Dog worked out. They did this sort of stuff to him.
Guitar Player did a good piece a few years ago on how to play the Stairway part. ✌🏻
It’s always hilarious to me to hear people try to figure out how to count that transition figure before the guitar solo on Stairway to Heaven. The complex machinations that musicians go through to make it land on &ah1. That figure starts on 1e&! It doesn’t feel like it does, but that’s Jimmy Page for ya. So, the chords (Dsus, D, C2) land on the &s of the beats.
For me the impossible count tune is Tell Me Something Good by Rufus. Even after transcribing the entire drum part on paper and playing it without the track I still can’t feel it with the bass notes on the off beats.
That looks like a lot of fun. I regret my career choices in life lol.
04:38 "That sounds like Zeppelin". No it doesn't… where's the famous squeak on the kick drum pedal? :)
KIDDING!!!!!
Brilliant. Thank you! Behind the scenes on a video
When i heard the first drum fill at 0:08 I thought it was going to be Green Earrings by Steely Dan
2:00 ah I was right
Watched Ricks first. But this behind the scenes shows the massive amount of work goes into it. Huge respect to all of you that make this happen. Greetings from Scotland.
Uffda that’s a mighty fine drummer. Dang.
Can you do a video on how to deal gracefully with sound guys, High stage volume, wedge monitors, IEM, back-lining, etc... just being ready for issues you can face while going from venue to venue. Sometimes I just can’t hear myself, and trying to get the rest of the band to agreed we need a splitter-snake for a mixer and floor monitors to run our own monitor mix and or investing in expense IEM setup is difficult. I never know if we sound good or not, and somehow the bass guitar gets louder with every song? Our 7 piece rock band barely fits on most stages(2 guitars, bass, drums, keyboard, violin, backup singers) too! And you could also do a video on how you deal with groupies and a band leader agreeing to do free shows that put us on stage after midnight on weeknights to a “crowd” of 7? thanks.
Rick Beato's video link ruclips.net/video/WPRsLsPzudo/видео.html
Lol ive tried for a whole day to get that freaking bridge down after I've learnt the solo and I felt dumb for not getting it right. Now I feel less dumb
This video completely shuts down all those ignorant people out here who think making incredibly high quality videos for youtube is easy. Brilliant, brilliant stuff from everyone - THANKS FOLKS!
Thank you Rhett!!! Great video!!
I‘m guessing that for many players the problem with the Stairway bridge is that they want the stab after the „du-du-dum dum dum“ to be on the downbeat, which it isn‘t. If you‘re fine with that, the whole thing is in 4/4 and starts on the 1. As simple as can be really ;) This was also actually the first time I counted it out. I usually find it easier to just listen and replicate what I hear (at least rhythmically).
I always thought that slide part meow, meow was Robert Plant singing.
Your title is total clickbait! I don't know how the algorithms work for you too but I believe the title should have been something like "two days in Rick beato Studio working on the top 20 drum intro video.". Anyway overall you're doing a great job keep up the good work.
I have a tape of my band from 1972 playing Stairway (at 2 different shows). We played that pre-solo transition perfectly every time. I can play almost nothing else as well as you or Rick, but damn, I nailed that one!
so is this how Rick does it? session musicians?
I have lost count how many times I have asked in comments about how Rick plays perfectly solo'd instruments of all the music he ever features. I found it difficult to believe either that he did it with software or that he had access to multitrack tape of so many genres.
dfpguitar
On his what makes this song great, he does usually have the multitrack recordings.
These recent lists he’s used musicians, but we always see them when they are playing a part.
'Stairway Denied 😕'
I'm sure that part in stairway is 4/4 its just played on the off beat. Like a half note delay and then they blend it back again going into the solo. It's a stroke of genius if you ask me! ;-)
This is really cool, Rhett. Thanks!
Great work! Nice to see a behind the scenes video of the work that goes into this action. I just got home from a session at my studio that involved placing some cymbal crashes and other bits on a tune. It's cool to see other folks working together on something, as I do, in a similar situation. I like playing out live but the studio is where I'm most comfortable and productive. Especially when working with other folks just as jazzed as I am about it all. Cheers!
5:00 sounds like my band.
No. That is my band's original song
Scrolling through the comments and description still trying to find Rick’s video 🙄
Favorite drum fills .. some of those done by Ian Paice, Daniel Seraphine
5:00 the hardest way to describe an extra 8th note, that isn´t even there, because it´s just 4/4 with syncopation
LOL
At any point during the making of this making, was Rick ever looking around for RJ’s phone number? Lol
Awesome vide. Shows how much effort goes into what you guys do
Thank you for showing us this behind the scenes,Really dig these type of videos.
So good, dude 👍
Have you compared the suhr reactive load with UA’s Ox?
Great video Rhett.I never realised the amount of time that goes into making such short video sequences.
Thanks you so much for this video.
That "slidepart" in Stairway is not a slide, It's Robert Plant imitating a slide guitar
From the thumb nail, I thought you had a life-size cardboard cut out of Rick
Love Rick, he is an amazing guy, knows his stuff, a font of all you need to know, brilliant listening to his take on song construction
At a gig in The Delancey NYC...i was suppose to start Tush by ZZ Top and i couldn't remember how the start sounded 😂😂😂😂 they waited for me like 10 seconds...i asked the bass player how it started then it hit me and i started the song🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
Rick is super intense man. In a good way. Definitely a producer.
Guys, you are overthinking that last part of Stairway at 5:25 ... if you count the first "DA" of DA-DA-DAH as beat 1 - so "ONE-ee-and" (and just account for the fact that the tempo has picked up a bit) it is ALL 4/4, dude
Loved the math part
Oh man, it's Rick and Rhett in the studio. I think I've died and gone to heaven (on a Stairway..)
I once played a gig where I literally forgot how to play a feckin G chord... so you ain't alone Rhett.
I don't know if I could subscribe to somebody who can't play Zeppelin.
Just kidding.
You guys are the music teachers I never had. Thank you for the information.
hey, Rhett! Does Rick pay you when he asks you to play for one of his videos? Same question goes to the drummer, Jack. I really don't know. I love your channel; keep rocking!!!
...for some reason...the technical side of music / recording etc.. , sucks the spirit of music out of my soul.....but great video fellows 👍
well that says something about being yourself, dude who played originally it was just being himself
Oh well, a bit of Stairway overthinking. Nothing major but you wonder if Rhett has heard the Individual Thought Patterns album ...
