LONG TERM COMMENTS In 2024 I'm still using Steg Pegz on everything I ride. In my 60s now so the support is becoming more and more important. It's interesting to note the standard Steg Pegz now come with TWO pucks on each side. Quite a few riders were buying the Desert King version which has three pucks on each side but I suspect the standard Steg Pegz will now suit if you want lots of support. only be needed if you need maximum support. The Desert King version is really for desert racing or if you have serious upper body issues. See this video: ruclips.net/video/KtmJku0YMII/видео.html TRY BEFORE YOU BUY? Sadly, no. And it's a problem because while most riders love them, or grow to like them, there's a small but significant group who hate them and then have to sell them. One possible solution might be to some door stops from your hardware store, drill some holes in your plastics, and bolt them on in the right spot. You'll find out really fast if you like the concept or not. And of course if you're young and fit, just learn to grip with your legs and maybe try some non-slip material on the bike frame or plastics! AREN'T STEG PEGZ JUST A CRUTCH? This is a common criticism. If you are young and fit, I suspect it could be valid. But if you have upper body issues, or are getting old, they can be a huge help. I fabed up some in house versions for my YZ250 and enjoyed them on my bike for about a year while I was still learning how to grip the bike more with my legs rather than death grip the bars and have gnarly arm pump. They helped to remind me to squeeze the bike with my legs as I felt the back of my boots hit them. I took them off about 6 months ago to free up my movement going down hill and other odd scenarios and like the freedom way more now! But now I can ride and hang on mostly with my legs without even thinking about it. So here's a thumbs up to having them and not, haha confused yet???! Love your vids guys. Hello from Western Canada!
I understand the tall-freak-of-nature problem very well: I'm 6' 4" and currently ride an old Honda XR250R, which is a great bike, but offers very little grip for your legs due to the flat side panels and lack of tank shrouds. I just stand where needed and sit or stand low over the seat for easier/smoother terrain.
it's almost as if those old bikes weren't designed for standing, scott. i occasionally ride a mate's XR200 and i can only stand awkwardly for a few seconds at a time.... same height as you.
I pulled them off the big 501 berg. I found they work great for hill climbs, stand-up wheelies anywhere acceleratio n or gravity is pulling you off the back of the bike. However @ 5.8 barefoot I did have trouble getting hung up at times and limiting movement on the bike when practicing going slow and balance practice. Also if you aren't wearing full size mx boots and just put on the dual sport boots to just go play around in the yard at home they dig into the back of your calves pretty good.
I went from road to dirt and the one issue I had was gripping on my KTM I struggled as everything on it is streamline and im 6foot tall not sure if thats tall in the dirtbike world. Anyway the Stegz have taught me to grip with my legs. Im shit with them but I would be even shitier without them. Big thumbs up from me. Oh and im also just over the 50 mark so everything i can get to help me is a bonus!
I grew up riding with Stephen Smith, the creator of Steg pegs, he was my riding buddy as a kid, but I haven’t ridden enough since to warrant buying a set, but I’ve ridden enough since to know that at my height on every bike, knee guards or not, I rub the absolute shit out of my knees and legs gripping the bike with my legs and knees without them. I’m almost sure it would help a little if not a lot. I still remember when he bought his first CNC machine and started playing with it. And steggles. If you read this, give me a call ya dog. I literally live 6500 metres from your place! Have done for 18 months!
My main concern with Steg Pegz is that they block access to my air box on my CRF. I agree with you that we should work on technique and fitness, then get parts if we still have issues. Another great video
I have found the stegz have taught me how to position my body when lofting the front end while standing and have good access to the rear brake. I now feel more comfortable doing this on bikes without stegz.
dirtbikeizlife video should be coming out this weekend, i had a friend out riding with me yesterday and i got some nice clips so will be putting one together this week
The only time I don't like them is when I check/change the air filter. As far as becoming reliant on them, I find that I only notice myself really leaning on them when on easier sections. Other times I guess I just tend to move around as required and don't like to grip the bike too hard in the tricky stuff. Never had any problem with them getting in my way, and I run two pucks each side.
Steg pegz aren't "bling"- they're simply correcting a design flaw in all bikes! They aren't magic though, you still have to train yourself to use them properly- I'll never go without them!
Stegpegz don't do all the work as some people may think. Still bloody hard holding onto ya bike going flat out. Still have to train your upper body/legs and what not. I love my stegpegz!!
Steg Pegz and Rekluse. lol. Everybody that doesn't use them says "it will hold you back in the long run". Funny that I've only been riding for 5 years, started in my late 30's and ride with people that have been riding for the most there life. So of course, They have leaned the expert level techniques over time that have elevated them past the usefulness of suck "crutches" and they ride faster, for longer, and quicker on more technical trails than me right? Absolutly not. I stand up more that any of them, I'm better in the tight stuff, I ride longer and more often and enjoy my time more. As apparent by how much time set aside for my new passion. Leaving all these life time trail riders in the proverbial dust. Long story short. If you're not a pro, and it helps you enjoy your ride more. DO IT!!! The idea that I am a plumber, or driver or behind a computer 40+ hours a week, and then when you are able to hit the trials on the weekend and not give yourself every advantage possible is just ridiculous. With some dedication, but also with the help of a recluse, and steg pegz and a modern 2 stroke (KTM) which are the two Items I credit with taking me to the next level, I've enjoyed my hobby tons more. I'm older. I can afford these things now. And I see no reason to not do the same if you can as well. Riding, the power, hanging with the boys, getting out in nature, getting exercise while having fun. Those are the reasons we ride. Don't be afraid to make your ride more enjoyable. 👍 (a buddy of mine gave me shit when I first installed the SP. I quickly noted he has "grip tape" in the same area, which I was quick to point out was a "crutch". couple rides later after seeing how I was standing all day, and it was something he wanted to do more. He bought the SP.
Well said! A pro rider says "You don't need those crutches" but they overlook the fact we aren't pro by a long shot. And we aren't aiming for their standard. And often we are twice or three times their age lol.
@@crosstrainingenduro exactly. I've had this conversation with a lot of guys. And I just like to remind them that everything is a crutch, gummy tire, crutch. Hydraulic clutch, crutch. Electronic start, definitely a crutch. That's one of the things I love most about my KTM coming from a YZ. Saves just as much energy as my steg pegz. (Also a crutch) Call it whatever you want, if it helps you enjoy your time more and makes you a better rider then go for it.
I bet when the first suspension appeared in the early 1900s there were riders saying it was a crutch and only pussies would use it... or however they would have said it back then lol.
Steg pegz are, are... Great for some people. If you like them, use them. Me, I stopped putting the latest greatest contrivances on my bike after the anodized billet gas cap episode. (No I didn't...) Seriously though, at one point I looked at all the stuff I'd put on my bike and did basically say "Enough". Admittedly a couple minor items have since found their way on board (winters are long in Alaska. Don't judge me). But I just don't want to deal with the protuberance of something like steg pegz on the bike. Even if they are heavily relied upon by Graham Jarvis, Johnny Walker and the like... (Is it just me, or is the sarcasm thick in here?) I can see how the pegz of steg would be helpful to many riders. But I truly believe proper body positioning eliminates their necessity. And by proper body positioning I mean riding on the balls of your feet. I recently watched an MX training video where Gary Semics was explaining the advantages of riding on the balls of your feet, how it helps you resist the forces of acceleration with far less exertion, and is fundamental to maintaining an aggressive body position. Quite honestly, riding on the balls of my feet and the resultant dynamics of body position are instrumental to being able to ride a dirt bike in my advanced state of age and obesity (not an exaggeration...). Regardless of my own views on the subject though, I truly believe you should do what works for you. If steg pegz do the trick, use them. How can I possibly judge? I have an anodized orange aluminum gas cap...
I personally am more of a believer in the orange anodized oil drain plug. I must also admit that I am a bit offended by your opinion on the orange anodized gas cap because mine is anodized in black. But I respect you opinion.
thanks for letting me know, nick. unfortunately i can't work out why it's happened. i use a good sound system including a sub woofer so i can check all the frequencies but occasionally it will go haywire on someone else's playback device. 😥
Great vid. Looks like it would be easy to make a pair. I'm 50, and just can't seem to hang on to my Africa Twin, when standing, under acceleration - I can't remember having this issue on other bikes when I was younger. Lots of arthritis and two buggered shoulders could partially be to blame, as could being fat and unfit. Definitely going to try these or something similar.
I recently put a set on my Tenere 700. I really like them. On the T7 I ride standing almost exclusively. On this bike, looking down from the top it is hour glass shaped, however the narrowest part is back behind where my lower legs want to squeeze the bike. So it is unnecessarily difficult and fatiguing to do for extended periods of time, particularly when really going after the throttle and up hill. The Stegz work perfectly for me. They mounted securely and easily. I got the "Dessert King" 3-puck version and tried them that way first. I liked it, but then tried only 2-pucks for comparison. I liked that even better, and with them slid all the way back in their slot. By allowing a lighter grip, it is easier to manipulate the controls and to avoid unwanted inputs in to the bars from hitting unseen bumps or whatever. Definitely allow a more relaxed upper body. They may not be a huge asset on some bikes, but on the T7, due to its body shape as well as its high power output (for a dirt bike), I think they are a substantial asset.
Well, I tried then but ended up giving them to my mate. Wearing knee braces (PODS) I thought the Stegz would stop the rearward slide but to make them work I had to have them way wider than safe. So wide I'd need to have a "Wide-load" sticker on and that caused all sorts of problems when having to dab, etc. So at 60 I started a lot more leg workouts and now I don't need Stegz at all. Funny thing is, the mate I gave them to loves them! Meh, works for some but not for others.
a very individual thing, hey glenn? i'm on a borrowed bike at the moment so no steg pegz... i'm gripping the bike as hard as possible with my legs, sitting down a lot, and while i'm aching all over i am getting by. i can see with a lot of exercise (and ibuprofen) i could get by without the steg pegz but at my age? no i'll go for comfort lol.
I agree about getting older and finding ways to ease the pain of riding long sessions. I'm even considering getting someone younger to ride my bike for me.
very handy tip from chris birch, that one. he said it doesn't work for everyone but sometimes has been the key for a few riders who just couldn't grip the bike properly until they tried this.
I was riding yesterday in BC Harrsion and climbing some serious hills leaning back against my Enduristan panniers which believe or not surprisingly offered some support and it made me think about getting steg pegz! LOL
hard panniers, wadz up? i hear debates about whether those can break legs or not in certain accidents.... so many debates on all sorts of bling out there lol.
CROSS TRAINING ENDURO SKILLS , no I was usung Enduristan soft Blizzard panniers, there designed in Switzerland and make amazing stuff. On my channel you'll see I reviewed there tool pack, small parts organizer and a waterproof tank bag. Love there gear. I'll be buying some Steg Pegz thanks for the great reviews.
my 250 two smoke is just to skinny and smooth to grip without help from some stegz.tried taking them off recently and couldn't believe how much I need them.so put them straight back on.
I can't imagine having to ride without them anymore. Just ignore the opinionated wankers and enjoy the benefits (of both the gear & ignoring the wankers).
I have them on my WR450. I actually double-stacked the rubbers as I found I was slipping over the single rubber alone. They definitely helped me as a relative beginner to the sport at 46. Maybe they are just age appropriate bling??
I'm still not 100% sure how these are meant to be used. Do you press against the pucks, providing a non-slip surface, or do you lock your boots in in front of them? I've seen home made versions using rubber doorstops that stick out a country mile, so I would imagine they are 'lock in'. But the StegPegz pucks are a comparatively low profile, so I'm thinking they're more for pressing against. (non-slip surface)?
I finally bit the bullet and bought some StegPegz for my bike now that they are making them for my model. I balked a bit at the price, but seeing as I know squat about metal fabrication and my tool collection consists only of tools for basic maintenance I sucked it up. These are a game changer! My bike is quite skinny through the area where my legs grip and I have just never found a sweet spot for consistently gripping. I went out for a couple hours this morning and what a difference! I hardly had to hang on to the handle bars at all which had an immediate positive impact on my throttle and front brake control. Now of course I can never sell my bike because I am too cheap to buy another set. I know that is illogical but...
Like always I enjoy to hear what you and other share about what is out there of equipment and rider techniques with more. And as you also mention there are some very "clever" riders out there that concentrate more on "Religious" arguments about riding gear, oil types, and bike brands than the real point: Enjoying you hobby and passion with good friends on whatever wheels your budget allows. What I learned in a lifetime of motorbiking on and now also off the road is that every time you see real talent and good skills the influence from 200 dollar Titanium fuel caps and latest technology totally fades when you get taken over by a rider on a old shitty bike on balled tires. Keep the good vids coming 🖒 BTW I use Steg Pegz and like them no matter if others hate them 😉
It's funny because in the introduction he mentions people becoming less religious and Logical Mayhem beat SonOfGod to first comment. oasn looks like it's been unlisted for a while before it was publicly released.
I would love some step pegz for my 2000 yz250 unfortunately they do not make them for the older steel frame YZ models. I even contacted them and got the bad news directly.
Just shur up and ride. Dosent really matter to me what you run on your bike. pretty soon we'll be needle dicking about which handle grips are the best, when it's a matter of preference. I think as long as the way your bike is setup makes you happy and performs the way you want it to, thats all that matters
Has anyone ever thought of placing an additional set of bumpers, forward, up high say near the rear of the fuel tank, to be used to rest your knees against for downhill tech terrain? A bit of epoxy and a couple of my daughters old skateboard wheels may answer this question! Anyway-steg pegz down and rear, another set higher and forward of the leg to meet the top of your boots about even with the knee for downhills. Could this work?
tried them but they don't help for me except in a limited set (basically one) of situations. Not 'easy' to always do-- but standing on the balls of my feet and shifting my body position forward and or back to a balance point will remove stress on my hands/forearms much better. Lots of 'exceptions' but if i can un-grip (almost let go of the bars) then I am in a balanced position......in short I have to 'unbalance' to lock in to the pegz in all but one position all this said I would recommend to try them--if they work then great--is not there is ebay......
I dunno, these mountain bikes with engines in them seem like cheating to me. What's wrong with just building your lower-body strength and using proper pedalling technique?
I have been pondering for a while now on getting a set for my bike, I can definitely see the benefit when doing long up hills, but do they interfere with leg position on steep downhills?
it all depends on whether you grip the bike hard on descents... and if you can you learn to ease the pressure for a second until your boots slide past the rubber pucks. most guys find this easy but a few don't and i suspect these are usually the few who take the steg pegz back off. essentially the pucks only grip when you squeeze the bike lightly with your legs.... otherwise you just slide past them.
Well if they are saintains tools and you are going to hell for using them then I'm coming with you as after watching your first vid on the stegz I had to get them. I suffer from tendinitis I'm both arms and have don for many years. Took about an hr to get used to them and pick the right time to use them, after sorting that out OMG WOW I can now ride for days and my tendinitis doesn't get inflamed and need a month to get over a ride. so I will gladly go to hell if it means I can ride my bike more often 😘👹😆
Hello :)! I have a problem i am 17 but a bit tall, i ride Gas Gas Ec 300 2004 and find it very difficult to ride standing. I even get more arm pump if i stand because the bike pulls me. If i lean forward i loose so much traction. I try to grip it very hard but my legs just slide back! Help please :)
i have watched all of your vids and i gripe the bike with my legs i even point my toes in a little but it keeps pulling me. Also i know the balls of my time almost all of the time but its hard. So i sit but the bike throws me around and its very hard. Help if you can.
haven't heard of that but possibly the pucks might slowly chew into a cheap set of boots? they've certainly never made a dent in my sidi crossfires the past three years.
You don't have only lovers or haters, also the ignorance. Didn't even knew this concept. I can see (imagine) the benefits of this invention. Also why to hate it. Never had a drink with Satan of his good counterpart so I don't know what I would choose if I moved to some where I could sink my teeth into real enduro riding. Now resuming my search for a nikocil coated steeringstemnut for a more smooth handling.
I really enjoy channel and typically agree with you. I have been on the fence on Steg pegz enough talked it over with more advanced riders. The most said comments was " I would never want to be locked down on my dirt bike " that was enough said for me A buddy of mine got a set and just last Friday he hurt his back because the bike looped and he was locked in. Here's a link to he's story. Now this is a group of regional riders so we all know each other. www.southbayriders.com/forums/threads/156317/
They don't "Lock in shit" they can't hold you to the bike if you bail, they don't grab on to you and hold you as your bike careens off a cliff....you have to consciously use them and all they do is with about an inch of rubber and proper leg grip aid with keeping you forward without having to grip the bars so tight. "Enough said" for you was enough for someone easily persuaded by someone who had zero idea wtf they were talking about..."hurt his back because he was locked in" lmfao crock o sht.
@@kenneychappuis1853 It's not just an opinion, it's actual real life experience and knowing that "locked in" isn't a term one can use with steg pegs, there is no such thing as "locked in." lol
maybe for some. you can see in the comments how some guys reckon it helped to learn these fundamentals then eventually they ditched them. everyone has their own experience of them i guess....
Its just i dont believe it can be over-stated how much bike control is done through your feet ie pretty much all of it... and these travesties promote the opposite like ya can just stand there, lean back and hold on... you should be balancing on your pegs and putting weight down, not standing on em. Dont know that i've seen a video that goes into the importance of that

I have an anodized orange aluminum gas cap...
well said... the correct color of anodised gas cap should remove any need for steg pegz at all. :)
I personally am more of a believer in the orange anodized oil drain plug. I must also admit that I am a bit offended by your opinion on the orange anodized gas cap because mine is anodized in black. But I respect you opinion.
I heard a rumor they come free with every box of tampons purchased?
i don't know where you heard that nonsense, owen.... they come with every box of sanitary napkins. :)
CROSS TRAINING ENDURO SKILLS :D
😂😂i assumed we all grip the bikes with our knees, thanx for the reminder that im in the short category,,, im talkin tippy toes at the traffic light 😂😂
Love your videos, music on this one sounds like my ear drum popping the entire video
thanks for letting me know, nick. unfortunately i can't work out why it's happened. i use a good sound system including a sub woofer so i can check all the frequencies but occasionally it will go haywire on someone else's playback device. 😥
I do all the time, Rob. I haven't appeared in my vids for over seven years now lol.
I've been doing the "Toes turned in" on the last few rides and it seems to help a bit with gripping the bike.
very handy tip from chris birch, that one. he said it doesn't work for everyone but sometimes has been the key for a few riders who just couldn't grip the bike properly until they tried this.
Let me guess... the people with the opposite opinion to yours are the opinionated wankers?
best intro ever!!!!!
(non-slip surface)?
seems legit, i like grip tape on the tank, but also i dont own a dirt bike :(
Astroglide is the only axle grease I need ;)
I should chuck these back on the bike but i kinda lost them
I finally bit the bullet and bought some StegPegz for my bike now that they are making them for my model.
Great to hear! Very occasionally guys buy them and can't get used to them and they have to sell them again...
I didn't know about these things, am tall and cannot grip my bike for shit so thank you!
Keep the good vids coming 🖒
BTW I use Steg Pegz and like them no matter if others hate them 😉
can't agree more, peter!
I tried them out when I went to the dunes and loved them but hated them in the desert that’s just me
I can see whoops being an issue, like when you dont see them till the last minute and need to let the bike do what it wants
I think ill get some for my DRZ400E :)
Logical Mayhem wtf i thought i was first but your comment was there month before mine :(
It's funny because in the introduction he mentions people becoming less religious and Logical Mayhem beat SonOfGod to first comment.
oasn looks like it's been unlisted for a while before it was publicly released.
Got them on my Ktm 300exc 👌
I would love some step pegz for my 2000 yz250 unfortunately they do not make them for the older steel frame YZ models. I even contacted them and got the bad news directly.
I know a few guys that have made their own from 3mm aluminium plate and rubber door stoppers.
Any issue with riding pants that aren't tucked into the boots?
I don't understand the step-peg hate. If they came on every bike for the last 30 years no one would question it and no one would remove them.
Love stegpegz but would never fit them to my own bike, I'm a short ass and they just end up annoying me
I ripped the motor out of my Beta and fitted it with pedals because an engine is cheating.
hopefully that shouldn't affect your downhill runs too much bill?
tried them but they don't help for me except in a limited set (basically one) of situations.
Not 'easy' to always do-- but standing on the balls of my feet and shifting my body position forward and or back to a balance point will remove stress on my hands/forearms much better. Lots of 'exceptions' but if i can un-grip (almost let go of the bars) then I am in a balanced position......in short I have to 'unbalance' to lock in to the pegz in all but one position
all this said I would recommend to try them--if they work then great--is not there is ebay......
a good point marshal, if you use all three possible foot positions on the pegs then the steg pegz will only work sometimes...
Do you normally use standard steg pegz or set back ones? And do you think it's worth going the desert kings?
Standard. And I've done a review of the Desert King which explains who they might suit.
@@crosstrainingenduro Thank you, just found the Desert King review and watched that one too. They look pretty good. Good vids, thanks again
Steg pegs are the Devils playthings
never clean them with holy detergent, they just warp and steam away into nothing. :(
I tried them and hated them, maybe I am just an old gumby but I found they limited my range of movement,
I dunno, these mountain bikes with engines in them seem like cheating to me. What's wrong with just building your lower-body strength and using proper pedalling technique?
Nicoya ever seen a grown man naked?
John John no, but I do like films about gladiators.
Armpump is mental 🙄 , atleast with me.
Help please :)
watch the vids about body positioning. and this one too about gripping with your legs. :)
i have watched all of your vids and i gripe the bike with my legs i even point my toes in a little but it keeps pulling me. Also i know the balls of my time almost all of the time but its hard. So i sit but the bike throws me around and its very hard. Help if you can.
just watch all the training vids, all the answers are in there somewhere
I read somewhere that steg pegs would destroy your boots. Has anyone actually experienced that?
haven't heard of that but possibly the pucks might slowly chew into a cheap set of boots? they've certainly never made a dent in my sidi crossfires the past three years.
Since no one seems to have had that problem, it seems it was just some crappy "fake news" :)
i do know trump speaks badly of steg pegz now :(
A guy I know of just had his boot worn through, the steg peg got caught in his boot during a fall and he broke his leg.
just asking do i get the normal or extended length
I didn't know they came in extended lengths...
StegPegs gave me male pattern baldness.
really? no hair loss here but my testicles retracted
Love my steg pegz but they destroy my boots
Why is this video unlisted?
because i haven't officially made it public yet
You don't have only lovers or haters, also the ignorance. Didn't even knew this concept. I can see (imagine) the benefits of this invention. Also why to hate it. Never had a drink with Satan of his good counterpart so I don't know what I would choose if I moved to some where I could sink my teeth into real enduro riding.
Now resuming my search for a nikocil coated steeringstemnut for a more smooth handling.
the elusive nikocil coated steeringstemnut.... coming in a video soon!
I really enjoy channel and typically agree with you. I have been on the fence on Steg pegz enough talked it over with more advanced riders. The most said comments was " I would never want to be locked down on my dirt bike " that was enough said for me
A buddy of mine got a set and just last Friday he hurt his back because the bike looped and he was locked in.
@@Lanlawns
Thanks for your opinion and I don’t care what you think , I’m sure you hear that frequently.
@@kenneychappuis1853 It's not just an opinion, it's actual real life experience and knowing that "locked in" isn't a term one can use with steg pegs, there is no such thing as "locked in." lol
Locked in? Sure, right. This is not accurate. YamaBraap is correct.
Steg Pegz - the quickest way to rubbish body positioning and bike control. But hey if you like that kinda thing...
maybe for some. you can see in the comments how some guys reckon it helped to learn these fundamentals then eventually they ditched them. everyone has their own experience of them i guess....
Its just i dont believe it can be over-stated how much bike control is done through your feet ie pretty much all of it... and these travesties promote the opposite like ya can just stand there, lean back and hold on... you should be balancing on your pegs and putting weight down, not standing on em. Dont know that i've seen a video that goes into the importance of that
our footpeg positioning vid touches on some of that stuff....
