Very helpful video. Thanks! When I first installed it on my old Great Planes Super Sportster EP, the oscillations were the exactly what you experienced, and it dove into the ground. I had no control at all at that point. I had the gains set at just beyond center (approx 1:00 position). Going to try it again tomorrow starting with them turned down to about the 9:00 and work my way up from there.
So impressed. Mostly because it’s so hard to get information out of hobbyking that doesn’t sound like Pre recorded NON DE SCRIPT blurb. I’m sure some frustrated hours have gone intoresearch for this content💯Thanks
I remember setting up a Hal many years ago which auto stabilised and the unit was fighting the balance as the flyer had mended a wing very heavy at the tip and the weight in the other tip. The result was like a tight rope walkers stick wobble - good way to describe it. Btw the video is excellent. I did wonder how these things worked / set up. I bet you are busier retired than at work! Nice one Steve
yep, thank you. It was really easy to do, I was a little bit confused because I just upgraded my Tx and didn't knew (at the time) how to mix it (elevons) but w/o touching my Tx and flipping the dip switch everything worked just fine! Keep it going! :D
I got this for my Dynam Waco Biplane. The idea is my landings will be more level in sudden wind gusts. If I can shut it off, that will be fine. I can always use it in a warbird eventually, I was going to get a Corsair anf figured that would really benifit that plane more.
This is most interesting. An observation , you may find that some of the over control/ compensation when the gyro is on could be caused physically. By having the camera mounted out on the wing and another dead camera on the other wing you may help the wing have a seasaw effect. The force or control to neutralise the wing will be greater as the wing outer weight s are there. Although its not self levelling , the corrections will lag. A little.
That's one spectacular back yard you have there :).Liked the vid, didn't think it long. There is a certain clarity and intent in your work that I will aim for when I begin to contribute to RUclips. I did enjoy the 808 #16 keychain cam footage and have one on my wish list. Quite clear that the FS works on your model given its modest wing span. That is why I was interested in your work because the first model I will attempt use on has a span of 30", I've subscribed
Great video i have a DX8 and the V3 gryo. got the gryo working pretty good, but could never get on/off feature to work. tried different Aux channels mixes and all with the dip switch in correct spot.
I have one of these...using with my now old DX7 Spektrum TX....binds easy and seems to work just fine.....I recomend using a six volt pack because if you have a weak 4.8 volt pack when all 3 servos are constantly moving because of the giros, it can rob the reciever of voltage...This makes all the servos jitter like crazy....and you have crashed!!!!!...Be aware of this....If you use a BEC....check its output voltage when its under load from the Reciever.....Six volts also makes the servos faster, which in turn makes the giros more effective due to faster response time...:)
The DX6i will switch to DSM2 if the receiver does not support DSMX so that really doesn't prove anything one way or the other. Check the specs on your RX3S.
That right there is the BEST REVIEW on ANYTHING ive ever seen on youtube. Hat's off dmerc00! That was a great ! PLEASE do make a video on the last two wing option's, it would be VERY interesting to see how it would handle them. Thanks'!
Fantastic explanation! I must be a Muppet! I kept looking for videos on how to connect one of these up, and I believe I was watching the videos for "V2"!!! And so I couldn't figure out how to wire up to a (separate receiver) DOH! anyway realised after watching your video, that the "V3" is a combined solo unit encompassing "its own built in" receiver! Oh dear, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who didn't understand first time? Thanks to your video, I'm now thinking of getting some more "V3" up units!
Thank you for a great video on review and application! Have you done a video on the v-tail and delta functions? I tried to search your channel and did not see. I apologize if I had missed it.
Michael Andrews I have this in the fasst version and have tested it to 400mtrs ,I'm sure it will go 2 or 3 klms at least , it range tests as well as futaba reciever, maybe the dsmx version with those short antennas is the problem?
i tried another V3 and had the same problem. After a couple of hours i think i got it. My plane has dual ailerons. When i told the DX8 my wing type was dual ailerons the DX8 took over the Aux1 (flaps/gryo) for left aileron and i could not figure out how to turn it off from the TX. The fix was to tell the DX8 my wing was normal and then plug the two ailerons into AILR and AILL then reversing one servo and the Ail switch on the V3 everthing seems to work. See nothing to it! Txs again 4 the vid
Richard Haynes It's a little tricky on the DX6i. Look at this thread: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2043334 This guy says"I learned to program flap movement - still not intuitive to me, such that I'm not sure I'll remember it next time, but I managed to get +/- 125% movement, and you can't get this all in one place with the DX6i."
***** Problem solved. I might have known, I am an idiot. I think that I had assumed that the Giro light went OFF when the Giro was off. But of course it doesn't. I'm feeling pretty stupid right now, sorry for the fuss.
For some reason it won't let me reply to your comment. Anyways, ok thanks for the tip! If I can't afford another transmitter could I get the v2 and separate receiver and get a y-splitter and 1 end connect the flaps servos and the other end connect to the gyro aux ( with a male to male wire) and then plug the splitter into the ch5 (or whatever it's called) in the receiver so ch5 would operate the flaps and gyro on/off at the same time?
I just finished an F-35 V2 Rcpowers foamy and am about to use the RX3s V3 gyro. Do you have any experience as to the connections and flight profile with that plane or other featuring the Vtail elevons. Thanks
Nicely done. I have one and would like to set it up for elevons. Simple hand launched edf. Aileron and elevator (elevon) mix. DX9 TX What are the proper dip switch settings? Which one are down and which one are up ? Thanks, Dave
Probably just need to set the delta mode switch to reverse. No mix in the radio needed. Should work fine but each case is unique so be ready to experiment!
Nice video congrats! two question, can I use in a flying wing like the neptune from nitroplanes, and second if you use the left and right ailerons servo independent, can I reverse in the transmitter to make work , thanks
Great Video. I have a question for you. I fly a lot of gliders and I have them programmed with flaps and the one I bought this Gyro for is also v Tail. If I understood well I should keep the aileron servos un- reversed or on a y connection and switch the v tail deep switch on in order to fly with 2 wing servos and v tail. Can you help on that ?
hi please help i fly ok using the version 2 model, but there is no way i can use the v3 on elevater and rudder only, also how does the ( in my case) gear cannel turn of the unit, it was easy on the v2 cos you just plugged a male to male in the gear /aux channel.wich ever way i connect the rudder( using aileron slot) it will not work. so does this v3 unit only support 3 axis models ie aileron, elevator rudder.please help, regards bob.
hi again please forgive my ignorance as i have only been r/c electric for a short time, how does the unit turn off via the aux channel. there is nothing plugged in to the rx/gyro unit.the v2 unit used connectors to plug in between the rx and v2 gyro stabiliser is this just a case of assigning the aux channel on my dx6i or am i missing something cheers.
Can we use any of those gyros with spoilerron or flapron. I am for glider and termik. Often it is a bit turbulent when landing on a good termik day. That is the reason I want stabilization but I also want to be able to use especially spoilerron when landing on short stripe
Very good video. I have one question. How do you set up the remote on and off feature. I assume it's controlled by a tx channel but how does that signal get to the receiver? Bill Stucker
Whatever switch you have set to channel 6 on your radio will work. Also you need to reverse the AUX dip switch on the gyro to enable it. That's it. Oh and don't look for a light to change b/c it won't.
Thanks! Very helpful! Is there a way you can turn on and off gyro with the dx5e? I have a super cub LP with ailerons and I will be adding flaps that's why I'm getting this. Do I need to get the dx6i or better to be able to turn on/off the gyro with the flaps in flight?
The version 3 needs the sixth channel, so no. You could go with the version 2 gyro and a separate receiver then you could use channel 5 for the gyro on/off. If you get another TX get a DX8 or 9 if you can afford it. Back-lit display and SD card to store unlimited models plus programmable switches and mixes. It's all worth it.
Hey I got a question about the RX3S V3 Gyro. it has two AIL, is it possible to use the AIL for flaps two? I got a RX610 installed an the Flaps function is possible over the mixer and flap switch... On the RX3S V3 too?
***** OK thanks but if i would have seperate flaps could i use them over the gear channel? so i could use AUX for on/off and gear for flaps. would that be possible?
Quas To the answer is yes and no. Just half way. I have now played a little with my glider. I can now (on a way) use aliron, spoilerron and flapron. It is not a perfect solution, but it function. I have my one ali in the aux and the other in ali. then I make 2 mix on the radio flap ->ali and ali->flap. I have dx7 and it has 3 position for flap. 1 I set to 50% up for spoilerron. 2 is 0% 3 is 100 down for flapron. Do it that way I loos the gyro on the one aliron, but it is really not a big problem it just become a little slower to level out, but I just gain it up and the aliron make a bigger move. Before you start you can just try unpluck your one ali and see how it goes.
I'm trying to work out how to switch the Gyro on and off via the TX. I use the 9XR TX with er9x firmware which allows for Aux assignment to any switch. Is the Gyro controlled through Channel 6? Do I need to flick the dipswitch "up" in order to allow it to turn off via programming? Does there need to be anything plugged into the Aux channel or is the Gyro hardwired to the Aux? Any suggestions?
***** Yep, I've tried with the switch up/reversed and using channel 6 on my tx but to no avail. I'm thinking either it's faulty or I'm missing a vital setting in the channel mix. Thanks for your help! ;)
*****......I finally got it to work. What I ended up doing was rebinding it with the gyro dipswitch set to up/reverse and my channel 6 already set-up. Strange how it worked like that but there you go. he he.
christian vandewalle Whatever switch you have set to channel 6 on your radio will work. Also you need to reverse the AUX dip switch on the gyro to enable it. That's it. Oh and don't look for a light to change b/c it won't.
christian vandewalle Check your settings on Flap Switch. My DX6i Sets gyro Off at -50. I set up flap switch at -50 Gyro Off, +50 Gyro on. Hope that makes sense.
why cant it be mounted on its side. I would think u could and just plug the rudder servo into the elevator channel and the elevator servo into the rudder channel.
Yes, but then you would have to switch the channels on the transmitter because the sticks would be controlling the wrong servos. Try it and see what happens.
i was just wondering. i just got it and gona use it on a techone venus the depron version and gona hav to mount it on its side. Its gona take me a while to put it all togather though.

Hi, i found your video very thorough and informative, thank ypou so much for taking the time to produce it. I have installed my RX3S in a delta wing and it seems to work a treat but I have a problem with turning the gyro on and off from the Aux1/Flap switch on my DX8. I am sure there is something I am doing wrong but for the life of me I dont know what. The wing and tail type are normal and the dip switches in the correct positions as per the instructions, but the gyro is on permanently no matter what position the flap switch is in. I have tried mapping Aux1 to another switch such as Gear but no change. What have I missed Can you help please? thanks Richard.
The DX8 has switch select settings. Did you check those in your radio? Flap switch should go to Aux1 and not be INH. Look at the DX8 Monitor screen and check for full travel on channel 6. Also the AUX dip switch should be reversed on RX3S. If that doesn't work you may have a bad unit. Try RCgroups thread as well: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1702672&page=108#post24858095
***** hi there, thanks for your reply. switch setting is: Flap AUX1 Monitor shows for AUX1: pos 0 = 100% pos 1 = 0% pos 2 = -100% is there anything else i need to set up? thanks again
I am new to this also. How do you know if the gyro is switched off? I assume the gyro light should go out? On mine it does not - thus the question. Great vid. nowhere could I find what the lights even meant.
Hi dmerc00, i have a spektrum dx6i new dsmx version and i had make an order from hobbyking of this flight stab. v3. When i saw your video explanation i was worried because you said it is not dsmx compatible but spektrum tx dsmx version is compatible with dsm2 receivers. Can you help me with this confusion. Thanks and sorry for my poor english.
I have my 1st FT Blunt Nose Versa Wing about done. I also have the Orange RX3S stabilizer but the one with the built in 2.4GHz receiver. I'm trying to figure out how to turn it on and off from my DX5I radio... Any Ideas? Also how sensitive did you end up setting your pots in the Orange unit as per stabilizing a Wing? My Orange RX3S unit even at the widest part of the inside of the Versa Wing, has the wires coming out of the Orange unit right up against the top of the inside of the plane...Any help would be great! Would like to know how you did yours. My E-mail is good on qrz.com Pics of the inside of your plane would be cool! 73 Jimmy, ARRL TS, WX9DX
Be aware, this reciever does not have very good range, so be careful how you position the two antennas...they need to be kept straight and at 90 degrees to each other for diversity......Why they didnt chose an Orange receiver that had a sattelite reciever port, Ill never know. Other than that, the giros seem to work ok, but it does not also have auto level, which is far superior, especially if you are a noob pilot.

The DX6i will switch to DSM2 if the receiver does not support DSMX so that really doesn't prove anything one way or the other. Check the specs on your RX3S.
that would explain why it works. i wonder if all newer dsmx radios have the backwards compatibility built in too?
Nick Lukefahr I would hope so. Let me know if you find out anything.
thanks for this very good video!

With a Spektrum DX6i, I can't get mine to turn on and off. Channels 5 and 6 do work for a servo, so it's not the throws @ 100 issue.
Richard Haynes It's a little tricky on the DX6i. Look at this thread:

Excellent video. New subscriber here. Would it be possible to have it turn on when flaps are deployed? The opposite of this video?
Do i need to plug anything into the aux 1 port to use the flap switch?
Can I use this Rx in a glow powered plane? . Wil it suport the added vibration ?.
+Lutero Bueno Not sure about that. You could mount it on some vibration dampening if there is a problem.
+dmerc00 Thanks.

The question is... is it a flight stabilizer with a receiver built in, or a receiver with a flight stabilizer built in? :P
What plane is that?
how can i switch on and of the gyro up my transmitter, i cant find it, thks
christian vandewalle Whatever switch you have set to channel 6 on your radio will work.

christian vandewalle Check your settings on Flap Switch. My DX6i Sets gyro Off at -50.
I set up flap switch at -50 Gyro Off, +50 Gyro on. Hope that makes sense.
Brett Hickey good tip!
why cant it be mounted on its side. I would think u could and just plug the rudder servo into the elevator channel and the elevator servo into the rudder channel.
Yes, but then you would have to switch the channels on the transmitter because the sticks would be controlling the wrong servos. Try it and see what happens.
so u can do it if u can program mixes like the DX8
archibald38555 Not sure, Switching rudder with elevator may not be possible with mixes. Why don't you try it and let me know.

Yes, they have four propellers.
Ok how about spektrum radios and kk2 boards
That was good how are you
Paul Antonucci Spektrum good, KK2 not so good, use NAZE32, Pixhawk if you can afford it.
Paul Antonucci I am fine today, thanks.

The wing and tail type are normal and the dip switches in the correct positions as per the instructions, but the gyro is on permanently no matter what position the flap switch is in. I have tried mapping Aux1 to another switch such as Gear but no change. What have I missed Can you help please?
thanks
Richard.
Try RCgroups thread as well:

***** hi there, thanks for your reply.
switch setting is: Flap AUX1
Monitor shows for AUX1:
pos 0 = 100%
pos 1 = 0%
pos 2 = -100%
is there anything else i need to set up?
thanks again
great video
Thanks!
I am new to this also. How do you know if the gyro is switched off? I assume the gyro light should go out? On mine it does not - thus the question. Great vid. nowhere could I find what the lights even meant.
Great review. Thanks.
My E-mail is good on qrz.com Pics of the inside of your plane would be cool!

very nice video!
great video!
muy buena explicacion , gracias.
Ignacio Benitez Thanks!
Be aware, this reciever does not have very good range, so be careful how you position the two antennas...they need to be kept straight and at 90 degrees to each other for diversity......Why they didnt chose an Orange receiver that had a sattelite reciever port, Ill never know. Other than that, the giros seem to work ok, but it does not also have auto level, which is far superior, especially if you are a noob pilot.
thanks
Yeah I have a dx7s.
Damn it all, the manual is a dead link...
i do not understand nothing but thank you
