I'm using some old gyros to help a new hovercraft track. Love the chance to see Josh Scott again, he's great!
If these guys could have seen at the moment they shot this video, what today is possible... They would be very happy.
Hello from Greece!!!!! Gyros or heros here are awesome!!!! Nice episode!!!!:)
DavidsLPs1000 Rc stuff is more expensive here.If you want a good quality rtf plane the price is about 160-369euros.If you want to scrathbuilt a plane the price can drop quite a bit...Americans are lucky, they have hobbyking. You can actually buy hobbyking stuff from greece but it gets pricy at the shipping when you order something heavy...The solution is to find if greek hobbystores that bring hk stuff here, they do but its double the price...They said couple of years ago that a hobbyking whearhouse will open in greece...what can you say about it...
It’s cool to see how much rc electronics have Evolved over the years
As far as sensitivity is concerned, it is *NOT* necessary to place the gyro near the CG as stated. The gyro will see the exact same amount of rotation and will have the same sensitivity whether it is at the CG or at any length away from it. In the latter case, it will also be displaced sideways, which is irrelevant because it only detects rotation. On a loosely related note, the further the gyro is from the CG, the more vibrations it may be subjected to, which might not be good for its internals. This is the one reason for placing the gyro near the CG, *not* maximum sensitivity.
I would say I would normally use a gyro on the roll only as this really helps to keep the plane steady during landings etc. Aircraft have more inherent stability in pitch anyway which makes any reaction to a gust less dramatic, so you'd only need one if your aircraft was very short and less naturally stable or had a very aft CG.
I use gyros on my helis and planes and I have to say that the gyro doesnt have to go on C of G but it MUST be close to the pivot point to have maximum effect. The further you place the gyro from the pivot point the more you have to have a higher gain setting. A good example is placing the gyro at the wing centre for aileron and at the pivot point for elevator. It makes things a lot easier and you will have lots more gain to play with without having to adjust control horns.
Thanks for getting this video out guys!. I might try this out on FPV Camera
God I just want to cry when I see these old videos and intro. The nostalgia just kills me
I'm from Greece and I saw the video so I have a little information for you. The word gyro comes from the word gyroscope and in greek it is called giroscopio as you correct told it giro. I liked your video very much and it helped me to learn new maneuvers.
Great video guys! I love all of your videos and literally wait for the new one every week while im sitting at work. Thanks for the great work!
I have been waiting 30 minutes to load this video (bad internet connection in my house) .. you do not disappoint me :)
Josh Bixler me paraît un brave type.
I have an old yaw rate gyro from JR, big bulky spinning gyro, large gyro controller and separate gain controller. Weighs more than my motor and ESC combined. I forgot i had it, just tested it out minutes ago, seems to work well. I'm going to build a plane and test it out. Might make a vid of it and post it as well.
You are just great. Real inspiration for me.
You have 3 possible choices, either get one y cable and one reversed servo and that will allow you to drive 2 aileron servos with one output from the gyro or you just hook up one servo and it will correct for up or down on just the one side but it will still compensate and keep the plane more level than not having any gyro at all, and last you could just buy one more gyro at 13 bucks and run one gyro on each servo, if it is a big plane the extra 30 grams will not be that big of a deal.
Yet another great video... Thanks guys keep it up
Wow, I remember the magic of these old videos…I miss it
@fisherboom The link is in the description.
Great video flitetest, enjoy watching your videos each week!
You could put three on. It works on tricopters... You would just have to adjust your gyros carefully. I'd set up one at a time.
If you're going to do just one, which axis are you having the hardest time with? If you find it rolls too much then put it on the ailerons, if you're having trouble with pitch, then elevator.
2 degs is 2 degress no matter what, but you still need to put it at CG because this is where the aircraft will want to pivot on. If you put it on where the plane pivots, it only sees the forces of the degress worth of change.. You put it further out and it sees the degrees, plus the side to side, up and down, or forward and back forces that are now amplified by you putting it further out from the CG.. its just making the gyro work harder then it has to, and adds unknown variables into flying
Can you explain how you setup your radio to switch between gyro on and gyro head hold?THanks.
You don't ever have to keep gyro's "level" at initializing phase. They can only track relative motion (angular velocity), but nothing absolute. I think you were mixing it up with accelerometers that some multicopter systems use for self-leveling. They on the contrary can sense static level due to earth gravity.
Good video as always!
Great information and brilliant flying skills Josh!
I have had it with these rudder flipping gyros on this rudder flipping plane
41Extremo took me a while but then I got it.
Yet again another great video guys! Thanks for sharing :-) Hello from Australia!
Finally a good reason to learn English!!!! :D (I'm french) Guys I LOVE your yt channel!!! :D
@gluino Hobby King doesn't sell this plane. It's from EOT Models.
Great video, but Honkenstonken is right: gyros measure angular movement, and as such they can be placed anywhere that is convenient; they don't need to be on the Center of Gravity. They just need to be aligned with the axis they are correcting.
He is also right about multicopters, most don't need to be level on initialization unless they use accelerometers. A pure gyro-based multicopter only needs to be still on powerup (not necessary level), just like a helicopter.
Cheers!
Great video guys, I have a question, have you try to put the Gyro in Head lock mode and fly the plane? I am asking because I try and my experience with headlock was not very good, in rate mode the Gyros work GREAT in my case.
Thanks again
I got one of these HK401B gyros to use for camera stabilization on my tilt camera mount for my quad copter. I would really like it if you guys explained the setup of the gyro more. Alternatively, I'll read the manual... but you guys make it more fun.
Hi guys, Could you use gyros to help compensate for torque roll!
We have a pilot at my club who put an IKON flybarless unit on a 3D foamy. it flies insane.
A nice idea, for planes without landing gear, would be to put the gyro centered while the plane is pointing straight up and instead of landing just fly somewhat close and put the gyro on and adjust the throttle and grab the plane while hovering automatically and finally cut the engine :D
MrPipaSc With any plane capable of hovering this can be achieved without a gyro, assuming the pilot is competent enough to put it into hover.
A plane that cant hover is out of this anyway, or make it glide towards you. Point is: You dont need a gyro for normal flying.
Yes multiple gyros work fine. Just get them orientated correctly. HobbyKing even has a 3-axis unit for cheap.
Hi how does the gyro on rudder affects the bank characteristic of the plane? will it counteracts the bank and show excessive "tail down" attitude in turn?
It looks fun for hovering though! :D
is it necessary to have an auxiliary channel to set the gyro up?
Great video, and considering the price of gyros at Hobby King, I would definatly have to get a couple (or three) to use in different projects.
But, can you explain to me - did you fly this plane with a heli setup, since you can control gyro settings on the fly? What radios have gyro settings for airplanes?
i use a gyro on my home built massive rc truck based on a mini quad frame, its very tail happy and almost un driveable without the gyro but spins are so much easier to avoid with a gyro.
i use the same one thats featured in this video, cheap but works just as well as any other gyro out there and i have that model on all but one of my helis.
Excellent.
From Thailand.
U guys are awesome
Hi nice video !!!
Can I use them on my flying wing? Did I need 2 of them than?
Greeting Flo
I miss the old episodes! So long chads garage
what is your camcorders? There are very good!!
Quick question?
Can a gyro Help to maintain a certain altitude for a long period of time
That is acting like as an autopilot in a straight line long distance travel ?
thanks for this great tip- what circumstances would I need to put a gyro on the ailerons or elevator axes? thanks for your reply!
I have my gyro in my plane and only moves the servo to the side. Can the gyro is defective?
Is that an old Kraft series 73 three channel transmitter? My dad had one of those when I was a kid. Had a "Brick" servo unit that had 2 servos built into one case. We used it on a Carl Goldberg Ranger 42 and a midwest cardinal arf. And eventually in a Dumas lil swamp buggy.
+Marc E (Skip) No gyros.....
Nice Vid!!
I am still a novice to rc plane and hope experts here can give me some guidance. can a heli gyro be used for flying rc plane and achieve the same effect as in the vid?
Cool vid, like what you guys do. I have a question though, when using a gyro, does it still 'correct' whilst you are using the control surface i.e.does the gyro temporarily deactivate if it detects input from the pilot? Or does it continue to stabilise even if you are using the sticks? Thanks, keep it up!
For the most stable scale type flight, would you put a gyro on the aileron, elevator or rudder?
I was looking at the RX3S OrangeRX 3-Axis Flight Stabilizer but they don't have in the US warehouse. Any recommendations on another type that is reasonably priced for a beginner? I want to learn how to use before investing a ton of money....
Holly crap you guys are young here!!
Can you put a gyro in a nitro plane, just asking because engines makes certain plane to shake alot?
'Eτσι!!!! Πιτόγυρο και στο Flitetest. Πάμε Ελλαδάρα!!!!!
Could I use two of these gyros in head hold mode as a stabilizer for a two access camera gimbal?
so i have 2 radios one is a futaba 7chp and the other is a 7u from 1991. my 7c has gyro settings in the radio but my 7u came out before gyros but still has heli settings. does the gyro just require a knob to control it (besides channel 4)?
great job, but I would like you to look at what you said about the gyro being on the CG. I belive you are mistaken. It should not matter if its on the front or back, 2 degs at center or 2 degs on the tail its all the same thing. I know that seems like it should be wrong but trust me math will not change look at a protractor.
@jairoblaster You're right :)
Nice! Could anyone tell me a couple of things? One: Will any gyro do? Next: Think it would work well with a Durafly F4U Corsair? I want to teach my Brother and Nephews to fly, but I never flew with a gyro.
@honkenstonken Wrong. Have you ever heard of a heading hold/lock gyro?
You would not really need to put the gyro at the 'pivot point' for yaw. The only thing gyros look at is rotation angles. Anywhere on the center line between the front and the rear would realize the same angle of rotation for the gyro's response.
can a gyro put a y conector for ailerons?
Hi Guys can you give me any info on the shoulder camera mounts your film guys use?
@flitetest who is the greek on in the vid?
i like that you say the word gyro in greek
The one they used looks like the rebranded GY48V's that I buy from Nitroplanes, if you cannot find instructions online let me know and I will scan a set of mine for you. Pretty much most operate the same way so these would probably be sufficent.
can i go out and bye one of theas for and rc drift car and use it like the hpi D-box to help me drift better ?
Just google the Futaba 401 gyro manual, its basically the same gyro to setup but the Futaba 401 is way better quality. You will also need to pull apart your gyro and make sure the internal board is secure in the case by using a small amout of hot glue on the edges of the board and place it back in the case and screw back bottom plate, its a five min fix that stops vibration thats common on the HK gyro.
I like Gyro.
Arriba lso GIROS, saludos desde Mexico.
Yes if you run one standard servo and one reversed servo.
Can the gyro be put on a rtf bixler?
Normally you have a switch to activate channel 8 or not, try the switch in both positions and then adjust the knob.
can i put 2 aileron servos on only one gyro? because i want to balance my katana in high-alpha maneuvers and it has 2 ail.-servos...
Hey J&J :) Gr8 job, your team has done a stellar job introducing tips and hands on stuff for the rest of us. Keep it up and keep em coming!
Just got my first 4ch and a go-pro so should be ape-ing you guys in my own time.
P.S- One heads up for you, try not to demonstrate the nose wag while the birds hot and your hand near the prop.
I have a DX5e transmitter and a 4 channel plane will the one extra switch be able to operate this gyro
would it be possible to use a gyro on a plane that has flaperons???
holy crap, i only just realized there was a giant flitetest "alien" statue 6 seconds into the intro at 0:06 on the bottom left corner. :P
How expensive are those gyros at hobby king?
I cannot find this plane on HobbyKing... is it just me?
I can only find the 620mm EPO Rarebear, which isn't a EPP profile type of plane.
I used them in RC Cars to keep my 100+mph cars going in a line with little help
great example of stabilized flight
I believe the sandwich is pronounced yee roo at least in Greek
@kirbybot Yeah, in that sense I'm wrong (shouldn't have used the word "never" :) ), but I didn't wanna bring up a discussion about angular rate integration and accompanying drift errors here... Didn't think about that many heli guys use only gyro's. But in most multicopters, accelerometers debias the gyro drift, and often if you don't use accelerometers in multirotors, you don't integrate the gyro's for absolute attitude which means initial position is irrelevant.
Joshua scott resemble à mon fils Haroun on dirait lui.
can you please go into gyros for a twin engined rc plane in case an engine fails?
When I put the gyro on, my ailerons wouldn't respond... I don't know-- I attached the gyro via channel 4 (aileron channel of me) then i put the auxiliary servo into channel 8 (my auxiliary slot) but it doesn't seem to respond when i turn the knobs... =\ any help would be appreciated.
how to use a coaxial helicopters gyro in an RC airplane/can it be done
so these stabilize them by using conservation of angular momentum?
Wish I had one in my Spitfire, may still have it.
Can I put gyro on my trainer plane (bix3 for example), would you recommend it because my bucket has been a little bit of a challenge to fly in the wind.
Please reply, thanks
How can I put a gyro on my ailerons when I have 2 seperate ailerons, and my DX6i mixes them together...? I don't have 2 gyro's for both ailerons, so what to do?
Is this hobby King gyro any good
Sooooo, do you NEED a gyro to fly an RC plane? Or are they just extra help?
Hi. First of all thanks for all those great helpful videos uploaded!
Regarding 3-Axis Flight Stabilizer(in my case I have OrangeRX RX3S 3-Axis Flight Stabilizer V2 (V2.1 firmware) and AR636A with AS3X from Spektrum) Is there any requirement to be used on any plane? I mostly flight and love warbirds so, what´s your suggestion? I consider myselft an intermediate pilot.
Thank you in advanced!
Les hébreux sont créatifs.
how much gyro 's can you turn on airplane
Hiros greek Xoiρος is actually the male PIG :P
GYROS which actually reads like yiiros.. is tha food ;) and it's because it's actually rotating while cooking ...
can one gyro control multiple servos or do you need a gyro for each servo
Yes
@edobeirne great comment - true!
