I purchased the Singer 9180 back in February. I had not purchased a machine in over 30 years and despite the negative reviews on this machine, I purchased it anyway because I had always sewn on Singers. This was my first computerized machine and first combo machine. I have had nothing but problems and frustration from this machine. When sewing, the thread is constantly breaking, I’ve tried several different thread brands, it happens with all of them. I have changed the needle, cleaned the machine, watched videos and reviewed instructions over and over, nothing has worked. The automatic needle threader rarely worked, the thread cutter only cuts the top thread, not the bottom thread. I had a few successful embroidery projects, but then all of a sudden, the machine does not recognize the 5x 7 hoop, which is what came with the machine, it’ll only stitch out a 4x4, I don’t even own a 4x4 hoop. I checked all my settings, found everything to be fine. After months of frustration, I gave up. $800 thrown out the window. I made the mistake of buying on Amazon as I had a gift card and initially I kept thinking it was operator error, so I missed my opportunity to return it. I would sell it but I wouldn’t feel right doing that to someone, so it sits, taking up space in my craft closet. My husband felt so bad for me ( He too looked at the machine & wasn’t able to get it to work properly) so he took me to the local sewing store for my birthday in July and said pick out a new machine, as long as it’s not a Singer. I was going to cheap out since I already wasted $800, but, he wanted me to get a machine I won’t outgrow and there was a huge sale. I ended up purchasing a Brother NQ3550W and I absolutely love it!!! I’ve done more projects on it in the past month than I did on my Singer 5 months. The sewing store wouldn’t even take the Singer in as a trade, they’ve heard the reputation. I don’t know what happened to Singer, but I will never buy anything Singer again.

Needle threader issues is #1 problem for most brands .... I have a Juki and a Janome and I thread both by hand and ignore the threader ... I constantly see posts of people complaining about them. They bend easily and will only work with certain needles ....

Exactly...I have two Juki's and love them both, but I had to give up on the threaders.

Deanna, you have to buy special machine embroidery needles. They have a larger eye so there is less abrasion on the thread. And, it's probably why the needle threader isn't working.
When I had my old machine, I noticed it was easy to bend the needle threader, but also easy enough to get repositioned again.
I would buy those embroidery needles.
Also, make sure you tighten your fabric in the hoop all the way around.
The more dense your stitches are, and the larger the pattern, the more your fabric will loosen as you sew.
I used to put double-sided tape along the inner hoop to help the fabric stay in place.
Hang in there! There is a learning curve here!

I don’t have that brand of machine but I have a Viking Epic2 and was told that if you use a needle with too small of a hole that the automatic needle threader won’t work. Which is something they don’t tell you. If you try to use an automatic threader and the hole of the needle is too small it will actually bend the threading wire and cause it to not work. I told the manager of Viking they should tell you that. Either in the manual or online.

I googled “automatic needle threader on singer se9180 won’t work”. Several articles including videos how to fix/adjust the threader. Also article on singer uk website linked in google search that had suggestions including replace the wire loop thingy on the threader. For what it’s worth I got a new quilting brother machine a year ago, and my auto threader has never worked! My 64 yr old eyes cannot see to thread manually and I end up using a big magnifying stand. Annoying as all get out. Seriously a bummer if you have to fully return it. I know how excited you were with it! ❤ Fingers crossed you get it resolved!

Oh Deanna I’m so sorry your new machine is giving you issues. I have a 10 needle embroidery machine and I use Schmitz 90/14 often depending on the thread type. Sometimes the 70/11 works. The 90/14s with a bigger eye help with threading and reduction of thread shred. I hope the seller can help you. And prayers for Mr. Crafty and a quick recovery 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

You shouldn't have to but that's all I heard. I hope & pray your hubby has a successful surgery and a full and speedy recovery. Good luck w/the machine & happy crafting.

I feel your pain, I purchased a Brother sewing machine/embroidery combination machine and the automatic threader worked all of once. It is super frustrating. I have used different needles and different thread. The local shop that I bought it from said I’d need to have their repair dept look at it. I don’t sew with it, but when I embroider I have to thread it myself. Very frustrating.

Hey Deanna I got this machine recently! It’s not easy to thread it especially with the black screw popping out of the foot right behind the needle eye the threader works ok but it tends to fray the thin embroidery thread a bit. and you have to be careful and slowly when pushing the threader down because it can hit the needle right above the eye you probably pushed it fast and bent it! However I had other issues with this machine:
1- thread tension is a nightmare I spent 2 days trying to fix it the top thread kept getting too tight even when dialled it all the way down to zero I had to fidget with the bobbin screws a bit until it got ok! Not the best result but manageable!
2- the detect thread break keeps popping up after few stitches and stops working even when everything is correctly threaded I had to tern this feature off in order to be able to sew something! It just won’t work
I think Singer quality has declined and it’s disappointing

Deanna, I don’t have this machine, but when I got my current one, I had a devil of a time getting the automatic threader to work. I’m afraid it was all user error for me. When I finally got the hang of it, it works great. There have been many good suggestions here. Make sure you are using an embroidery needle. Also use a thread intended for embroidery. Make sure your presser foot is down and that your needle is in its highest position. Joann’s is not always good about returns on open electronics so I’m hoping that goes well for you.

I had the same problem with my combination Brother machine. I kept getting the same results you did with the bottom thread showing through and also breaking needles. So I finally kept working with it and found out that the speed needs to be set to a lower speed when you embroidery. But, I could never get my threader to work. Sorry your having problems.

Love Schmidt needles. The only ones I ever use they have so many cool ices. They were the first Teflon coated denim needles that made it easy for me to fix things on my sons clothes love them love them love them so sorry about your problems with your new baby, I would stick with the Guttermann thread
Yes, it’s more expensive, but it’s well worth the price and the lack of headache that I have had when I use others.

Sorry to hear the automatic needle threader is not working. My brother did this but it was a result of me pulling the threader down hard and the needle not being in the correct position. I changed out the needle and I kept trying to get the threader hook to go through the eye. Eventually it did. I think I must have bent it out of alignment the first time it stopped working and then I must of bent it back into position as I kept trying to get it to go back through the eye. Its been working so far and I'm much gentle with it and I make sure the eye is positioned correctly. Good luck with the return.

Hi Deanna, I have a brother embroidery machine and I agree with @rusticcraftycabin in the comments, make sure you have your needle set at the highest point and your pressor foot down when you use the auto threader. Just make sure to pull enough slack for threading. BTW I use polyester thread for embroidery, its stronger and actual embroidery thread has a pretty shine to it. I use organ needles I believe 80/12 I know how frustrating it can be when you have a new toy and can't play. I hope you give it another go before returning it. Good luck, hope it works out. TYFS 😊

Deanna, I also have a Singer Embroidery machine, just not the one you have. I have only tried to use the needle threader a couple of times. I bought mine used so I can't return it. Here is what I suggest you do before returning it, get in touch with the Singer customer service and tell them the problems you are having, see what they say about how you can fix this problem. I would not talk to the sales rep at JoAnn's, they are not the best at solving problems -- they are great at selling. The machine I have is the Futura, and it has it's drawbacks also, but nothing I can't overcome. I would tell the customer service people that you are not at all happy with this purchase. DO NOT let them try to tell you that it is something you have done incorrectly!! Good luck!

And like you I always used the brand you do in your work horse, maybe that is the problem I need to go back to my old faithfuls and ditch the singer brands, lol that’s what I would do with your new machine I do know singer needles they all seem to be longer and thinner then other brands. So that may be the biggest issue with them threaders they don’t like the name brands the want the off brands. lol ya never know, hope y’all find a way to make it work for ya. Tfs ❤😊

I'll wait til next week for your info update. I do so hope a replacement machine will do the trick for you. I grew up using my mom's treadle machine and we always had a Singer right up through the earlier electronic ones.
I bought a Janome craft sewing machine a few years ago, and that was really great. No bells or whistles. Only needed reliable stitching ability. But, I've given that to my great niece, so I'll be buying a new machine for myself. This SE9180 seems ideal if it works right. Best of luck, my Crafty friend.

It sounds like you would need to either go online and watch them or call them and ask their advice and what's the best thread and how to use it, but I'm sure there's a video out there on RUclips or something that would show you sometimes, just seeing it being done you pick it. Up and they would give you a better advice about the thread. That would be my opinion, but you're the you're perfect at this.II wouldn't know what I would be doing but I know, I would probably be looking at a video and/or calling someone with the company. That's what I think I would do.

Are you using specific embroidery machine needles? There is a difference. Haven't taken mine out of the box yet - still making room - lol. But first thing I did was buy some machine embroidery needles. Here's what Mr Google says, Although both can be used for machine embroidery, the main difference between embroidery and sewing machine needles is the shape of the eye and scarf. Machine embroidery needles have a longer eye and a specially-shaped scarf to suit the more delicate embroidery threads and not to break or fray them. Try googling the difference as there are lots of links, tuts.

As much of a pain in the butt that it is when you buy a machine like this, you need to read the entire owners manual cover to cover as many times as you can to thoroughly understand it. They have a lot of idiosyncrasies such as needle size thread, type, fabric, weight, etc. etc. etc. I know you’re familiar with using machines but I know most people do not read the manual.
