After realizing there's no possible winning move against the bongcloud, both players agreed to a draw.
The interesting part is, Hikaru did so well with Bongcloud against even masters during his streams. Fact is, theory goes right out the window with Bongcloud and Hikaru has already created his own lines with it. It becomes a tactics game immediately, and Hikaru has the advantage. There is a psychological factor as well, as it appears that opponents go on an immediate attack that causes them to lose, often not developing first.

*There's nothing to be done here*
@Tin tin man True, but how many GMs will take the time to study it? The only time we've really seen is when the games don't matter.
@Tin tin man Magnus was one of the first ones to do it, even before Hikaru. But he doesn't normally do it in competition. It was always for fun or handicapping. Him and Hikaru probably do it simply for the challenge, as its hard for them to find true competition. You likely won't see them do it in serious competition when winning matters.

for those who don't know about it much yet, the opening is basically a meme that hikaru created on twitch since we can see that it gives black an advantage. but it became somewhat real and not a meme anymore when he began beating IMs, FMs, even GMs.
magnus clearly knew about this and decided to use it against hikaru, you know their rivalry, magnus would be like asserting dominance by beating hikaru with the opening that he created for fun, and we all know magnus is better than hikaru in rapid by considerable margin.

@@magnafire1 have you seen the standings??? Regardless of the result, Hikaru and Magnus already qualified...
This video makes me so happy.
Hikarus reaction the moment king moves to e2 is so genuine. He went from being serious, thinking of all the possible openings, then straight to dying of laughter the moment bongcloud was played. Then magnus, serious as well, probably ready to make sure the game moves for the draw, starts laughing when Hikaru plays the same opening. then they both started cracking up because they had mutually decided they’re going to make it a threefold draw. Man, what a great video, just pure genuine fun.
Thanks for the explanation

Thanks bud🤝🏼
I also love how after they both moved their kings back, Hikaru went back to being serious for a split second but then started laughing again when Magnus moved his king back forward.
And it was an instantaneous reaction from Hikaru. Either they have the fastest internet/intranet connection or the uploader edited the video to sync the screen board and players.🤔
Besides Naka and Magnus laughing, I think Peter's reaction completed this moment.

@@Wortelemes Hi typo I'm Dad
To explain a little for those who don't know. As Hikaru and Magnus said themselves, they both went into this match expecting a draw, because neither would benefit if they actually did end up playing. The tournament format makes it so that you want to be in the Top 8, and both are secure in their spots, this match is essentially useless. Peter Leko shows off two different draws between GM's using the famous Berlin Draw in the same tournament because the 4 of them were all also wanting a draw. The Berlin Draw is used in high level play to make an early draw. When Magnus played Ke2, he basically forced one of two outcomes, either HIkaru plays Ke7 and the two go back to the original squares and play no-castling chess, or they both repeat the moves until the draw happens.
It was likely to be a draw either way, so by doing it this way they both have a good time (you can see them both laughing! which is nice) and gives a good laugh to the viewers who want to see it.
Thank you for that explanation because I surely had no idea what was so special. I didn't understand the significance of making that move. Never seen it before in my life!. I understand now.
@@tytaylor1843 Yup! I do have to say that Magnus would be pretty screwed if Hikaru decided to go for an actual game after Ke2, but he knew that Hikaru would almost certainly play Ke7 as Hikaru is famous for the "bongcloud" opening and he's already done it once in a high level tournament.
thanks for the explanation, I still don't understand it but get the gist of it now and feel 1‰ smarter!

The draw by 50 move rule isn’t stupid at all. It’ a quite usefull in many situation and prevent from games that never end. For example a Knight and Bishop mate or a completely draw endgame where a player refuses the draw.

The part I find especially interesting here is that the players couldn't claim a draw by 3-fold repetition after 5...Ke8. This is actually correct - while the placement of the pieces is the same, the moves available to each player are not. The difference is that the castling moves are available on move 2, but not on moves 4 and 6, hence this is not a 3-fold repetition. They couldn't legitimately claim a repetition until 6...Ke7 had been played. I'm just amazed that whoever programned the software actually thought of this!
