That's funny the way he says is so convincely to kick the villagers out of the island, as if he wants to save the island. Little do people know, after they kick the villagers, they will build all those freaking villas, resorts or whatever it is. Just like what happens to Bali. They dont want to reserve Komodo island, they only want money. Shame on them!

I Agree with what he's trying to do for the Komodo dragons but he doesn't need to kick the Villagers off (My personal opinion)they don't harm them at all (if the villagers do then he should but if they don't he should just stop people from coming)

I am Indonesian, i hope this become international attention. The government wants to kick the villagers for tourism, not for the sakes of komodo. Actually, its the villagers who protect the dragons from animal trafficking and i heard news that a tourist bring baby komodo in their trunk but fortunately she/he got caught in the airport.

This is interesting but difficult to watch. Village dwellers who have lived in a land for generations should never be extirpated in exchange for fiat currency... Especially if they're not harming their local environment. I think that governor just has dollar signs in his eyes.

      @Patrick B
I'm sure there are some endangered species where you live too! Time to move on buddy! We'd ALL be moving on if that was a criterion.
I know a little bit about lizards having kept them for almost 47 years. Monitors are despite appearances, VERY intelligent animals for reptiles. The villager likely recalls a time when a level of synanthropic behavior occurred. The lizards knew when they were on to a good thing and left the villagers alone regarding attacks as their food needs were being met.
Yes, the over-proliferation of tourism is a bad thing. Return it to previous levels by increasing visitor costs somewhat. Give the villagers wildlife training and custodial powers and sustainable tourist business stakes etc.
Not some elitist prick governor arbitrarily removing a community. Promoting visits only by the ultra-elite. Disgusting.

Seems you are a reasonable person!
My argument is that presumably the varanids got on OK with humans at a limited level of co-existence. The over-commercialization and up close huge ocean liners may not be helping. I would like to see more evidence of a decline or radical change in the Komodo dragon's behavior before a human population removal. Yes- curbs on growth and expansion and or financial inducement for those existing younger residents not interested in partaking of an Island conservation role? . May be difficult I agree. The cynic in me just sees dollar signs in the Governor's eyes and the 'eco-shacks' or 'eco' - mansions?' moving in, the private helicopters and super yachts arriving? A displaced, uncompensated 100 yr+ resident (apparently) probably quite poor population adding to the world's refugees. For (possibly) marginal benefit to the animals.

@Patrick B Have you been to Komodo National Park...?? There is 5 islands there, and only one island will be closed soon. the island name is the komodo island. So if the tourists want to see the komodo dragons, they can see them on the other islands inside the park.
It is not clear yet where the governor planned to relocate the villagers, but i think probably will be to the one of the other island nearby. but i don't know, we'll see..
It's just about how the governor will try to communicating/lobbying/negotiating with the villagers.. the way i see him talking in this video, i'm no wonder why the villagers said that they'd rather die than be relocated

I've always been fascinated with the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) and I used to own a wholesale reptile business that sold a couple related Varanus species. I anticipated that there would be disagreement/controversy over the conservation and management of the Komodo dragons and their environment at some point because like in so many other instances, as interest in the animals increases, the number of tourists increases which then increases the need for peripheral services and facilities, all of which can lead to an impact on the health and population of the animals and destruction of their environment if early measures aren't implemented to manage the number of tourists and to prevent environmental impact. I applaud the local governor for his concern over the dragons and their environment, because too many leaders have had no foresight and are only interested in the short term increase in money, but I don't think appropriate conservation requires his radical step of moving all the local natives (who appear to be the best advocates for animals), closing the park for a year and then allowing only a small number of tourists to the island for an exorbitant fee (which essentially means that only rich people will be able to visit). I agree with the female tour guide that the implementation of appropriate restrictions on the number of tourists and management of the number of associated businesses and their environmental impact is enough to maintain sustainability. That would also mean "average" tourists could still visit and that could improve the chance of successful conservation in the future because being in the presence of threatened animals and their environment instills much more empathy and desire to protect them than reading about them or watching them on the internet.

I am torn. On one side, I agree that in order to conserve the existence of Komodo, it is better if they are left alone in their own natural habitat without human intervention, yes the people said that they will help protect the Komodo, but those are only the people interviewed in this video, we don't know about the other people.
On the other hand, it definitely is unfair for the good people on that island, who consider the Komodo their siblings, part of their society and only want to live together in harmony.
I am sceptical about that governor, however, 9:53 "become an exclusive place for just a handful of wealthy people", if you want to let the Komodo to just live in the wild, what are the wealthy people there for? I don't know much about him and won't claim to, but just based on that statement, it felt like he only wanted to monopolize the tourism industry on that island.
In the end, I just want to wish the best for the people on that island and I hope even if they should eventually be relocated, they will live prosperously with abundant happiness in their new home, and of course for the Komodo to live where they are supposed to, far from the grasp of greedy golden hands which reek of the blood from our wounded Mother Earth.

I think the outsiders who come to the Park are a bigger threat to the dragons than the native human population is. Those people have lived next to the dragons for so long that their presence would be missed, probably. Fellow, and thus rival, predators? Yes. But the relationship between both groups has been beneficial to both.

You are going to need a better reference than that. It's a very short excerpt from a vid misusing the term _venom_ the same way this vid does. _Venom_ is defined as a toxin, not poison, produced by the animal (e.g. spider, snake.) The Komodo Dragon does not produce a venom itself. Bacteria living in its mouth, and the chemicals they produce, are the active agent.
My educ is over 3 decades past. Things change. The theory of kd oral flora toxicity is not settled science and research goes on. Venom is produced in glands, and I can't find any research demonstrating those. I would welcome any scholarly input.

    • @riyabanerjee2656
      @riyabanerjee2656 4 года назад +2

Wow! You call this sociopathic behaviour? We, humans, qualify as narcissist. We are destroying everything. Forest, air, water, land etc. (basically the environment). We do not even spare animals (ruclips.net/video/Zp-ALoBRW20/видео.html). Calling him a sociopath is just too wrong, especially when all he is trying to do is save Comodo dragon from extinction.
I agree that he wrong in driving the villagers and that what he is planning to do is wrong only because the villagers are not hurting/hunting comodo dragons. *In my opinion, the only reason why these villagers should not be driven away from the village is that they are not hurting Comodo Dragon.*
Truly, this world is rotting because we are part of it. While we are advancing in technology, we are just ignoring everything else. Yes, I am a human. Yes, I feel sad for what we are doing to the environment and other species. No, I am not a sociopath. Unfortunately, we are too selfish. Of course, not all are destroying the environment and at the same time, not all are trying to save the environment.

Monotremata lay eggs and are mammalian.
So that's not the distinction. Plus some reptiles 'live' birth, not being 'laid' as a hardening or leathering externalized egg.
Plus monitors may or may not be dangerous. Human acquainted ones may be much less so- but I would never entirely trust them as they are quite intelligent and still might have reflex actions if they are spooked.

And the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water: in the habitation of dragons, where each lay, shall be grass with reeds and rushes.
"Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the Lord: look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged. Look unto Abraham your father, and unto Sarah that bare you: for I called him alone, and blessed him, and increased him. For the Lord shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody. Hearken unto me, my people; and give ear unto me, O my nation: for a law shall proceed from me, and I will make my judgment to rest for a light of the people. My righteousness is near; my salvation is gone forth, and mine arms shall judge the people; the isles shall wait upon me, and on mine arm shall they trust. Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished. Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings. For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool: but my righteousness shall be for ever, and my salvation from generation to generation. Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the Lord; awake, as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Art thou not it that hath cut Rahab, and wounded the dragon? Art thou not it which hath dried the sea, the waters of the great deep; that hath made the depths of the sea a way for the ransomed to pass over? Therefore the redeemed of the Lord shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away. I, even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass; And forgettest the Lord thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and hast feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor? The captive exile hasteneth that he may be loosed, and that he should not die in the pit, nor that his bread should fail. But I am the Lord thy God, that divideth the sea, whose waves roared: The Lord of hosts is his name. And I have put my words in thy mouth, and I have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, Thou art my people. Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the Lord the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out. There is none to guide her among all the sons whom she hath brought forth; neither is there any that taketh her by the hand of all the sons that she hath brought up. These two things are come unto thee; who shall be sorry for thee? desolation, and destruction, and the famine, and the sword: by whom shall I comfort thee? Thy sons have fainted, they lie at the head of all the streets, as a wild bull in a net: they are full of the fury of the Lord, the rebuke of thy God. Therefore hear now this, thou afflicted, and drunken, but not with wine: Thus saith thy Lord the Lord, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, even the dregs of the cup of my fury; thou shalt no more drink it again: But I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee; which have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy body as the ground, and as the street, to them that went over."
    - Isaiah 51:1-23

If we don't do anything, as the village grows, humans will gradually encroach on the Komodo dragons' habitat. It makes sense for the island to take the same approach as Boracay to save its environment. The tour operators have a firm understanding of this.

Now I'm not trying to be mean but I agree with there governor because even though they don't do anything at least most of them like the ranger said theres people that hunt the deer on the island which is one of the komodo food sources If we share the same prey us humans are more intelligent and more accurate when hunting so we would have more afficient kills than the komodo which can lead them to extinction so if I were the village people I would leave komodo island so they can thrive and we are out of the picture there are 7billon of us and our numbers continue to rise and only a few thousand of them let them be also we humans almost live on every continent on earth so the people will definitely be able to find an home also yet again I'm not trying to be mean just real🦎🦎🐉🐉

There's gonna be a resort there in a year, first truck drove it's way in the island today.
The locals are hardwired, they live together with the lizard for hundred years, now they're fighting for the lizard.
      Shame on you
You didn't understand how the locals tried their best to keep their habitat intact, now they are forced to relocate and their home now gonna be turned into a resort real quick.

Wow wtf, so I am going to say I had a kid and a chicken 🐔, I will write the story on a piece of old paper, bury it with next to lots of chickens 🐔, and call it chicken little. Once someone finds it, they will believe the story.

      1. Why can't he? - ok you keep on supporting people on being bitter and resentful
      2. Did it hurt your fee fees? - what part did you not understand in that I don't have a licence which means I don't pay "fee fees" (do you speak baby talk a lot)
      3. If you don't realise the BBC is fooling you, then you're one of its fools - For god-sake don't get your knickers in a twist its a program on Komodo dragons not a propaganda advert for a dictatorship.
