It's a shame his son died. People loved that guy and he basically seemed like a real life prince that you'd see in fantasy. Imagine how different British history could've been if Henry IV didn't become king.
Trying to keep those posessions in France simply wasn't practical and too costly. A similar problem that the HRE emperor had with the Italian city states. One devided by the Alps and one by the channel. Had the conflict continued, both sides might have been too weak to get into the colonial game. As the English nobility had cut their cultural ties with France to quite some degree, it is likely that the French population wouldn't become loyal to the English crown and stay distincly French which would make keeping the region under control more difficult esp. when national ideas started to develop. Taking the French crown while staying an English king was highly unlikely. One side or the other would always prefer a different king. I like what-ifs but there's usually a very good reason why things turned out the way they did.
Ikr. No Wars of the Roses. And if Richard II's Dad had lived longer, he may have had a positive influence on him. Maybe Richard would have had kids one of whom could have inherited the throne.

Was the head of the AEC, rearranged the periodic table, and advised 11 presidents on nuclear policy. I think he'd be a good topic for a video.
@@Xasrrz There's a video about it on the toptenz channel, but long story short they were never his channels he was just hired on as a host and has now parted ways.
I understand the sense in which Edward III was effectively King of Britain. However, there are soldiers mightier than kings. Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote about King Arthur to honour Alan Rufus, hero of Hastings, founder of the first English High Court of Parliament, proponent of free trade, law professor, innovative architect and master builder, and trainer of the first English army to conquer Normandy.
French was used by the higher ups and by Edward as his main language even after giving English "official" status. It remained the language of the king and aristocracy for at least another century.
Really liking the style of presenting Karl. Yes, Simons shoes are big shoes to fill but I can definitely see your confidence in this, your sincerity and i didn't notice the feedback myself (didn't seem like a distraction to me) but it's good you listen to your audience constructively. And also, loving the haircut, look very handsome 😅❤
I love the English and GB history videos. As an American, it shows why the war of independence in America, was really an extension of hostilities in great Britain between the loyalists of the monarchy and those opposed to the monarchy.
Nice job! I actually read a book earlier this year about Edward's wife, Philippa of Hainault, which of course means I learned a lot about him too. Fascinating stuff.
My patrilineal ancestors are Rutherfords, who were Scottish lowlanders that fought the English until James united the crowns, after which they left Scotland, mostly for the Americas. We finally got our way in 1783, lmao. Only took us ~6 centuries.

If you look at older videos on this channel, there were quite a few where he filmed in front of his computer tower. lol It will take time for us to reach that level of production quality, but we will get there. :)
How many arrows did English archers carry? If they could shoot 6-10 a minute, wouldn't they be out of arrows in just minutes, or did they have some cart full of arrows close by? We think of ammunition as cheap in the age of gunpowder, but arrows take a while to make.
Prior to going on campaign, Edward's army commissioned the creation of over one million arrows, which were included in the supplies taken across the channel at the start of the campaign. On the day of the battle, each archer was given 3 "quivers", a total of 72 arrows. As the battle wore on, runners were sent to the rear to retrieve more arrows, and archers would move forward during pauses in the fighting to retrieve arrows stuck into the ground or in corpses so they could be fired again. During the Battle of Crecy an estimated half a million arrows were used by the English.
