I play this one around the house a good bit. I'm thinking about doing some mods to make it a gigging axe. I'm considering a humbucker or maybe a different P90. This one sounds good but it could be better. It's still a great guitar for jump blues stuff!
I'm due to receive a red 335 Grote in 4 days. So hyped on 168 delivered. Love that arrangement of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow," I'm mainly another blues rocker strat guy, but a pretty guitar and a good song played well, it is ALL good! You play effortlessly and smooth. Happy New Year. Cheers from Milwaukee.
I've recorded a fair bit of blues with the Grote. Gets the job done! Even records well direct. I'm almost tempted to get a 2nd one. One for flatwounds and the other for round!
Mike, I just received one of these red Grote archtop thinlines today. I am stunned how cool it is. It's basically an Epiphone Century copy. I'm putting 9 gauge strings in mine because I have 9's in my other thinline which is a Ibanez AFS75 and it plays and sounds nice with 9's. Thanks for your video!
I have 12s on mine. Love it! It records really well too. I've used it on a few sessions and have had some surprises tonewise. I can get a really nice old school soul sound with it.
From Leo: Nothing wrong with your Jazz work. No doubt, there is something special about a top grade jazz guitar. There is something extra special about a cheap guitar that plays and sounds good.
Sounds like you play jazz just fine, Memphis Mike! Nice playing, nice arrangement and nice clean tone. I have the same model and I'm using D'Addario Half Rounds (EHR350) 12/52. They are a nice blend of the qualities of both flat and round wound strings. I like that they retain the unplugged volume of this guitar which is one of my favorite things about it. I have removed the pick guard, upgraded the tuners (Gotoh SG381-04 Keystone) and added the pickup spacer. I also replaced the softwood bridge base with a rosewood one (~$18) and this greatly improved sustain and volume. Not planning any other mods. I just love the sound of the P90 pickup. Best Jazz guitar value around. Thanks for another great video!
Thanks for the kind words. So far, I've had no issues with the bridge or tuners but will keep your advice in mind. Did the raising of the P90 alter the sound any? Easy enough mod...I'm just lazy. LOL
@@MemphisMikeOFFICIAL haha, no, I love the tones. It was just a play on the word/name I think they're wonderful guitars, actually thinking of getting one. They're around $250 now I think. I've never been a "big brand" person myself. I imagine, just as with most other lesser names I've purchased, a good set of strings, a graphite nut, and locking tuners... and it's good to go.
@@warthogA10 I'll personally recommend getting one. I have about 20 guitars, old Fenders, Gibsons, Epi, Guild, etc. The Grote gets its fair share of play time. Worst case scenario, you decide not to keep it and sell it. I think you'll keep it.
@@MemphisMikeOFFICIAL Your absolutely right I was New to buying a guitar and I wasn't familiar with all my options but I've had my Epiphone for many years and I rarely use coil tapping features. But it's beautiful in sound and looks.
I think that Monoprice and Grote are the best alternative guitars for Squires and Epiphones. I think I'm going to invest in the semi-hollow with the P90. I don't buy duplicate guitars that are the same style I have not even from different mfgrs or modify. I rather buy the type that I'm interested with the features I'm looking for instead of tearing apart an existing guitar. I have 6 electric and 2 steel and 1 nylon guitars. I try to play all my GUITARS equally instead of buying more than I could possibly play equally and enjoy all of them. My favorite guitar that I have is All Of Them.
@@phillipholt6005 I have a giant mess of guitars, basses, ukes, and assorted stuff. My favorite guitar is always the one I'm playing. I have different guitars for different jobs. I have some that never leave the house and some that were bought purely for road work Baggage handlers are not always thoughtful of gear.
Thanks for the review. Nice playing dude.
Thanks for watching AND thank you for the compliment!
Nice review Mike, I have ordered one and I'm hoping she has a nice trip and a wonderful life in the UK. Hope you're well in your corner. ✨
Let me know how you like it. All's OK here I guess. Had a stroke a month ago, retraining the left hand so I can get back to playing. Day by day!
I have the same guitar. I ordered the pickup shim to raise the pickup

Nice playing my friend. And nice guitar. I like those Grote guitars.
Thank ye kindly good sir!
Have the Grote. Now if I can play that tune like you did, it will be great. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for the kind words!
You did a fine job!
I just bought one of these in sunburst last week. I liked it so much I just ordered the red one.
Thank you for the kind words. For the price, these guitars are tough to beat!

It doesn't sound great...
It sounds Grote...
Grote-esque?

The name " Grote " Sounds better when pronounced Grow- Tay . The Chinese folks could use a good English Language Adviser.
Grotty perhaps?
Nice guitar. Doesn't sound as 👍 good my 339.
Thanks. It probably cost less than your 339. 😎
