    11:58 don’t lie to yourself man, it makes perfect sense that the arm broke there since it’s the place with the least carbon on the arm, plus it has a joint with metal, which isn’t flexible, meaning it won’t absorb the energy, therefore making the carbon take all of it, what u need is to reinforce that small point and maybe compensate for the weight with a couple holes elsewhere.
    Regardless, this is an amazing job you’ve done so far. And I’m really impressed, not gonna lie. I’ve been thinking about getting into the 250g world and these videos are definitely very informative.

    Great testing Tommy!!!!
    Suggestion: For Frame testing only = Build the frame weight it down without using expensive electronics. Say just pieces of lead weight for battery weight camera FC ESC and motors.
    That way you could just test the strength of the frame with an actual all up weight of 268 g without the expensive electronics on board smashing the frame into the concrete wall. Just a suggestion it would be a lot cheaper and you could repeat the test many times without fear of ruining your electronics.

    Tommy- that was astounding. If you were tightening screws, then they stretched from the impact, rather than breaking the arm. You flew it back! Stress fracture? Possibly, but you didn’t X-ray to know. Rinse and repeat a number of times? I was amazed that the motor bearings and shaft were good. Low mass! You have it really really great in that the arm acted as a fuse and absorbed the impact rather than the main body, as designed. Absolutely positively wondermus example of beta testing. Sales date? Need a little brother for your first one..........

    Jeebus I want it! Can't wait to see what you put together! I really wish we could petition the powers that be to nudge that weight limit to 300-350g. At the end of the day it's an arbitrary line in the sand and I think there is a lot of benefit/risk ratio left in the equation in favour of safe lightweight operation. It seems aimed at maximum kinetic energy/damage capability...160km/h (45m/s) at 250g = ~500 joules. I guess it's hard to be specific about top speed so they had to more explicitly limit mass...end of the day they all have enough mass to all cause catastrophic fod to a jet engine on ingestion. Rant over...I guess just give us this frame!

    Cutting micros is a pain because that 2mm hardware. Snapping 1.8-2mm burr bits for the small guys. Larger frames that let you get away with a 3mm burr bits are pretty trouble free by comparison. As for dust, that is why I chose the machine I did, all my milling is done under water and runs through a filter to capture my spoil/dust.

    Fyi, Aluminum wire is about 1/2 the weight of copper, but it's a whole world of pain to work with. (special crimp terminals or ultrasonic welding are required) Looks like silver wire could save 20% of the wire weight and would still work with standard solder joints. Higher temper insulation on thinner wire might be a better attack, as you can get insulation rated up to 200C pretty easily.

    What's the chances, during an intentional crash, the drone gets deflected away from the object by the props and the frame doesn't even hit?

    Anyone else wince every time you hear that bone crack? I've been all in on your Remixes, had to make some "Junk in the trunk" cages for the vista, but they fly beautifully. I'm all in on these ones too. Ready to switch it all over.

    I think what you have created is less 5" replacement and more of a better explorer lr quad. Some pretty interesting stuff even if a little misguided. 3.5" props, 1806 motors and keeping it dense with a smaller build body is really the answer for what you want. A 5" doesn't fly like a 5" because of the prop size but because of a balance of parameters such as thrust, weight, density and disc loading.

    • @ummagawdFPV
      @ummagawdFPV  3 года назад

      I think that's subjective (a 3.5" on 1806). It sounds like it would be fun. But I'm simply trying to see what can be squeezed out of a 5" lightweight setup, having flown 2.5, 3, and 4" already

    • @PineyJustice
      @PineyJustice 3 года назад

      @@ummagawdFPV I've built one before, they're a blast for proximity and small area flying and I'll be building another. Also, I found back then that 5050 props tended to "swim" through the air and were actually more efficient than lower pitch props.

    Love this video. The transfer of energy from the arm strike into the other arm reminds me of aikido. Also, I now understand more why the arm setup with the contact points. Makes me wonder, if one put a high tension sprint between where the arms touch, if that could help absorb some of the impact without moving it into other parts of the frame. As both arms are still the path it would take.

    • @ummagawdFPV
      @ummagawdFPV  3 года назад

      It should help, but then more weight. The arm ends actually have a hole there so I could attach a brace but after this, I don’t think it’s necessary

      @@ummagawdFPV Surely, a small spring, like the yellow on we us on 3d printbeds, can't weigh to much more than the parts of carbon that would need removed to fit it..

    Hopefully it doesn’t have the same issue as the Moongoat. I purchased a couple of Moongoat frames and after several crashes, the housing that holds the camera has routed out the grooves it sits in and causes jello. No way to avoid other than to never crash....

    Perfect design man, get it to break on the arms before anything else. Multiple impacts will damage any frame design. Send it!
