There's some good motive development in this solo. I like how he'll take a nice 5 note riff, repeat it and embellish it a few times before moving on to a new idea. It's like compositional improvising. He kept it concise too and didn't overplay which I like.

50 year old here and I have obviously heard of Zappa before. I dismissed him early when I was very young because I did not understand the layers and complexity of his music. I recently watched a video on Amazon about one of his albums Apostrophe and I was floored. I have spent all day taking breaks and listening to this mans music. I have so much to catch up on.

    • @Matty88K

I'm about 10 years older than you. I was lucky to see Frank three times while I was in college and while I enjoyed his music back then, I really didn't come to fully appreciate it until years later. it's a lot to wrap yer head around, and musically quite sophisticated. Nowadays I listen to Frank a lot more, and I miss him more than ever. We are so blessed that he recorded so much music and that many of his live performances have been released posthumously. So sad that he died so young. He had a lot of ideas still in the tank.

  • @therightisright8276

What made him so different from other guitarists were these facts:
He improvised his guitar solos at every performance. He never limited himself by playing in any box or chord form.
He never stayed strictly within parameters of time, mood, speed, key or classical structure of music and though a composer himself, he broke the rules and created something noone else could-which was utmost important to him that he be unique above all. Steve Vai will tell you he knew others could do far more than they thought themselves capable and this came from his own workaholic drive and pushing himself.
Now if only he and Eddie Van Halen hadn't smoked, we'd still have 2 incredible, unique badass axeslingers.

It’s interesting to note that according to the Barry Miles bio, with this band, Zappa felt that he was finally working with musicians of the caliber he needed to execute his challenging compositions. The problem was that they were all conservatory trained, in bed by 10:00, technically superb modern music geeks (I’m paraphrasing here) who didn’t crazily mix it up while out on tour. They very rarely initiated or took part in any sort of touring rock band debauchery that inspired the Mothers wild reputation in the past and so inspired Zappa.

The fact that Tina Turner and the Ikettes did uncredited backup work on the studio version and totally nailed the very Zappa-esque backup chorus “solo” that comes after the guitar solo and runs parallel with Ruth Underwood’s xylophone makes this song all the more better.

@Tarik Bey I prefer the studio solo version which it will always be the best, lika inca roads studio solo version is the best, much respect to you being a jazz musician, and I have many favorite guitarists, but the one that expresses my feelings the most is zappa, there's just something about his sweeping and visceral picking skills using on his lydian and mixolydians licks and solos, that it just transcends me somewhere melancholy, yet happy, although sometimes sad mood, but it always fells great afterwards...
