Hi Being a salsainstructor myself, I am very aware that my students actually do the steps the way I teach, apart from differences in personal style of course. Your instructions are very structured and detailed, and I really like the way you teach, it is indeed in accordance with my own philosophy, and you are adressing some VERY important issues, like bringing the hand DOWN as you get out of hammerlock to avoid hurting the lady's shoulder! I also agree to your focus on mastering the basics before you proceed, this is of vital importance for developing into a good dancer.There is a big BUT here though, and that is to critically decode your dance to ascertain that what you actually do is what you think you're doing. And this is even more important for the teachers, so that they don't leave their students frustrated. In this video of the 'Butterfly Hammerlock', the last 'arm in arm' figure is not instructed the way you dance it! Watch closely on the man's number 5 step. In the beginning of the video, when you dance this figure freely as you normally would, you always step forward on the 5, following your lady smoothly (0:36 and 1:03)In the instructions you tell your students to BACKstep on the guy's 5 step, and here you also show the backstep(5:10)Ok, so you fall into the most common pitfall for salsateachers by dancing one thing and instructing the opposite. We have all done that, myself included. So the solution is to make a prerecording, and THEN sort out the proper instructions based on your analysis of your own dancing. Here you will see the obvious reason for why you actually FRONTstep on the 5 instead of BACKstepping as you instruct. If your somewhat frustrated students, backstep on the 5 while the lady frontsteps, they will actually 'halt' the left side of her body, causing her to turn left, and the figure will be awkward to complete. - You explain this consequence of the backmovement of the lady so well yourself at 5:40 in the video :)In the first part of the video, prior to the instructions, it is quite clear that by frontstepping on the 5, following the lady, your dancing is fluent and elegant!So, as you are very nice and good instructors, take care to decode every step while you actually dance the figure. For students the whole figure can rise or fall with the mere mix-up of a front or back step, and to my experience, ever so often with the man's number 5 step!Keep up the good work! For sure your students can learn a LOT here - but even more important, INSTRUCTORS can learn a lot from your WAY of teaching! You are so well analyzing the difficulties and challenges of the figures, pinpointing exactly where to add some extra attention and effort on the details that make the figure work! This saves a lot of time for the students, instead of trial and error! But I really enjoy and respect your gentle way of teaching - both of you! Always with a smile, and taking your time to let the students pick up small chunks of information at a time. I have now watched some of your most advanced figures - and even there you take your time to point out the small basic details, which is often forgotten, and still so important reminder even for experienced dancers! AND - you include the women's styling in the figure, so that the couple get the whole package. This is equally important for the guy to focus on, to know the lady's styling - because you dance as a couple, not as two individuals! This is wise and GOOD teaching! AND this is BY FAR the best instructional videos I have EVER come across on the internet - largely due to your way of teaching! Having danced and instructed salsa for nearly two decades now I feel I am able to tell, when I see good instructing :) If you ever think of going north of the Polar Circle you are very welcome to stop by and teach at our salsaclub in Tromso or at our yearly Midnight Sun Salsa Camp!Regards Stein.
