  • Ride Sharing Apps like Uber, Lyft, Sidecar, ect use a rating system to keep the drivers and riders safe. Bad Rated Drivers are removed from platform(s), Bad rated Passengers get cancelled and/or skipped by drivers more. In this Video I created a sheet with calculations where I show you why your driver rating drops so fast but rises SO slow that you may thing it is NOT rising at all.
    This is an issue with MANY drivers, especially the new drivers. But you will see why and i hope understand why you as a driver doesn't have to worry so much if you are doing a great job. Even the BEST ride-share driver has this worry because we can loose the driving account and lose that extra income.
    Thank you for watching.

    many riders don't respect Uber drivers because of the lack of respect for the brand. they quickly forget what crappy service the receive from taxi cabs. I got a 1 star because I hit a pothole on a dark rainy night. another 1 star because I wasn't knowledgeable about the riders area that he lived. another because the customer placed the wrong pickup point. Uber gives these a-holes too much power over the drivers

      I left Uber about a year ago since they decided to reduce the fares 15% in Manchester as well as in London. It's worldwide exploitation, riders are happy, because it's too cheap, so they use and abuse it. Drivers the other end are working long hours for peanuts and paying 20-25% commission to those motherfuckers. You can t make a living working for Uber.

    Really appreciate your video! I think Uber should have some sort of "1 rating forgiveness policy." I, currently, have a 4.91 Riders Rating... i received a "fluke" 1 star rating from a customer who I believe did it, just, for the heck of it & my rating dropped from 4.93 to 4.82 overnight. Although this rating could have been entered late or changed at some point, it goes against the "norm" of my average ratings. Never received a 1 before, havent received a 1 since with 317 rides, thus far... Clawed my way back up but it can be devastating to a driver's morale...

      First of all don't be an asshole assuming is her fault, and really? you think Uber takes the time to call and ask for an explanation? Riders feel empowered to give you a bad rating or a good one for that matter, depends on their state of mind and sobriety. I'm a driver/rider. Once you know what you have to put up as a driver you really become appreciative.

    The rating system is still unbalanced and unfair man. I did 25 drives within my first two days and already dropped down to 4.67. I've done everything right plus a lot of the times it don't be the driver's fault why they get deactivated it be because of the inconsiderate ignorant passengers don't give a damn. Not all of them like that just some arell

    • @Ridesharingtech
      @Ridesharingtech  9 лет назад +6

      +sparkfirehot It's a give and take system. I will agree that it has allot of parts that are not fair at all. First thing is that even your best will not make everyone happy. Some want to talk, another do not want to talk and some like the car, others don't. But when you start your average DOES take hard shifts when a small number give you a rating below 5. But since you are still under the 100 mark, you can and will raise it quickly. The more rated rides you have, the slower the impact from a rating below 5 will be. Last thing is passengers lie. Most will tell you that you were awesome but it's not always true. Do your best and it will average out. Thanks for watching and the feedback.

    Mr. Kalinick deliberately set up this rating system because he knows sooner or later everyone will fail. Why? He doesn't want experienced drivers. Experienced drivers might want to organize into a union. Experienced drivers might notice their cars are wearing out. Experienced drivers might start taking street hails. Experienced drivers might give out their phone numbers, and start running trips off the app.

    The rating standard for uber is bs! Most people believe a 5 star rating system is the same for everything not just ridesharing, like yelp, itunes, etc... So why do uber riders get cutoff when they go below 4.6?? Literally a 4 rating movie is a great movie, yet a bad rating for an uber driver? Seems very off

    • @Ridesharingtech
      @Ridesharingtech  9 лет назад +4

      +Endorphin Factory Your concern is one felt by most all long time drivers. But it's actually not that simple to be cut off for bad rating. I'm working on a new video showing this. allot worry about being cut due to rating but very few actually do get cut. falling below 4.6 on X Only places you on a test period. and It takes allot of low (less then 5) ratings to be kicked out. so a couple of bad raters will not end your side hustle. I hope to have it done soon. Thanks for watching.

      Let's be honest, regardless of the unfair customers, and the biased fucks, your job consists of driving. Not even heavy machinery, and not even a stranger's car. Is it so ludacris to except a driver to show up on time, drive properly, and be nice enough? Maybe the star-rating is flawed, but if that your job's ONLY criteria, can't you live with it?
      How hard was it to get hired? How many interviews did you go through? How many hours did you have to log in before taking your first customer? Do you know all the streets by heart?
      Pretty sure it's all No... cause the gig was handed to you... And it can be taken away just as easily.
      Ride sharing exists because it challenged the old taxi experience, and the shitshow that it was. Now you want these companies that built themselves around customer satisfaction to lower the bar?

      Se B So by your logic its cool if a driver, whose courteous, gets you to your destination on-time and safely but they follow their navigation, which isnt a perfect system by any means, which may take them once in a while on a possibly longer route to a destination, adding maybe a 1/4 mile to a fare and an extra $00.23 to a fare resulting in the fare giving him a 4 star rating, be fired for it???

    Based on UBER current bs rating methodology, they could technically AXE an otherwise total professional drive who is a major asset to their platform based on unfair 1 star ratings thrown around by unstable riders. And at the same time harbor a potential disastrous driver, who simply got lucky with their ratings, who would do more to hurt their brand with some kind of major incident......

    This vividly shows the flaw in the rating system... it is biased against drivers, because they expect you to be close to perfect. Another way to think about it is that in a sample of 500 rides, each "star" contributes 1/500 (or .002) to your average rating. So getting a 1-star instead of a 5-star will drop your average by 4 x 0.002 = 0.008. You could have done 499 perfect 5-star rides, but that one 1-star ride drops you from a 5.0 to a 4.99 overnight. To get back to a 5.0, you would need to do 500 more perfect 5-star rides. The closer your rating is to a 5, the more effect a low rating has in pulling your rating down and the harder it is to get it back up.

    • @Ridesharingtech
      @Ridesharingtech  9 лет назад

      +Rideshare Warrior I don't see the flaw. Your numbers are solid but I made other videos where is actually shows that it takes allot of low (below 5) rating to be deactivated. Stats show that many that leave Uber / Lyft don't leave because of rating deactivation. It's actually not a large number that get dropped because of low rating. Let's forget rating 1,2,3 and talk about 4 and 5. The rating really is a fight between how closer your are to a 4 or a 5 star. To fall under enough to get a warning for low rating actually takes a bunch of below 5s to trigger. 2,4 or 10 low ratings will not do it. I will give you that getting it back up is VERY hard but if you have allot of drives(Rated trips) then even low ratings cause the average to drop slower. NOBODY will ever be a perfect 5 with 500 trips. Especially with many of these young millennials that don't rate 5s because some oddness. Even with a few asses, you will average well if you are doing a good job. high 4.7 is GREAT. Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts.

    • @ridesharewarrior1666
      @ridesharewarrior1666 9 лет назад

      It's flawed because the number implies a quantifiable score that doesn't exist. It's not like getting 9 out of 10 right on a quiz. People rate on different criteria and there is no objective standard. Is a 4.8 driver better than a 4.7? Not necessarily. A better system would be to ask each rider would they want to be matched with this driver again, yes or no? Then a score of 0-100% would give you the percentage of riders who said they would want this driver again. Now it's pretty clear why a 90% driver is better than an 80% driver. Also all rides have the same effect on your rating, which can go up at the same speed that it goes down.

    • @Ridesharingtech
      @Ridesharingtech  9 лет назад

      Abe, We are not building hospitals, we are simply moving people from 1 part of town to another. Riders mostly doesn't care that much nor what to waste that kind of time. It wouldn't matter because I alreadyshowed you that you really require many low (less then 5) to fall into the warning zone. With your system, the bench mark can be keep 90% "Would use you again". 3 say No and 7 say yes you would equal 70% liked you. It's still averages. The speed would still shift at different rates because someone with 500 trips and 25 said NO with your system shifts the average slower then 25 NOs on a person that has 100 trips. And it doesn't change that if a rider wants to simply be a dick because they didn't like your car or price to rate you NO when you were a good safe driver. Needs more rethinking.

A week ago I was at 4.92 now these last days I have had some picky riders and it has dropped to 4.88 very close to 4.87. I feel the same way. One wrong thing and the rider gives you a one star. You can open doors until you are blue in the face. Play music, talk etc. They just done appreciate the drivers. They took holy he'll from can drivers. Now if you make one wrong turn coming to get them. They cancel.......

    • @rhey81
      @rhey81 8 лет назад +4

      Exactly... Then you have fares who either want to talk or keep to themselves, I try to gage it as best as I can. If fares give me one word answers to my questions I keep to myself then. And I get a 4 star rating for my effort. If I was as critical of my passengers as they are of me, few future drivers would be picking up these people due to their ratings..

      I work nights, take drunks home, working until the last clubs close at 4am. Not a problem if you treat them right. The above video is just simple mathematics and is only offset because we have to work within a very narrow band. I am the ONLY driver who shouts 'TRIMMED MEAN' yet I am a driver who actually doesn't need it. I haven't a clue why other drivers don't demand trimmed mean as a more representative statistic. If drivers DEMANDED trimmed mean, practically all the problems listed here could be solved. The problem with Uber drivers is they don't think. They don't seem to be able to work out how to get a 5* absolutely every time. If I wanted to, I could guarantee 5* every time before the rider even gets in the car, but now I simply change my way of working to make it easier for me. If I go down to 4.95, then I'll change back to the previous strategy knowing it will go up again. Right now I think I am close to going up to 5*, but it's more likely that a change might go down to 4.98 instead of up, kind of exciting to watch what it does.

      I know this is too late for you but anyone else EXPLAIN IT TO THE RIDERS. If you are sincere and explain how the rating system works and that THEY ARE RATED TOO you can easily run off 25 str8 5 star ratings or more.
      The simplest way I have found to bring it up is when they ask How long have you been working for Uber how do you like it? Boom right there is your in. THEY ASKED ABOUT IT. I will say I love it, but the rating system needs to be better explained to riders I think" then shut up . Curiosity will make them explain it.
      Another way ask them how long they have been using Uber if it is a short time ask Well if you have any question about how the app works or the rating sytem or blah blah blah
      just don't be preachy or come off as begging.

    I am frustrated with the rating system. My rating is down, again, to a 4.49. Last Thursday I got up to a 4.51 again and then despite getting a ton of 5 star ratings I had 2 people obviously give me 1 star ratings for no good reason and bam...dropped to 4.50, then to 4.49 again. Now since the 4.49 I've gotten about 8 to 10 more 5 stars and it hasn't gone up at all. I'm at 550 trips done, 413 rated, 310 5 stars. I have gotten to the point now that I am talking to every passenger and asking them to give me 5 star ratings as anything less is telling Uber that I am a bad enough driver I should be fired.
    I've scratched back up to 4.53 a couple times only to have people give me bad ratings and drop me again. It doesn't matter what I do. For 3 weeks I got out and opened the door every time I possibly could. I asked them what music they wanted (most said what was on was fine.) I picked them up right where they were 95% of the time (sometimes it's not possible). Keep clear of controversial topics (unless they agree to not rate me lower if they don't like my viewpoint). Even with everything I do I still get people giving me lower ratings which is completely unfair.
    One thing I have noticed is that when I do day time rides during the weekdays with the business people I get much better overall ratings. It's my late nights on Friday's and Saturdays that seem to be killing me in most cases.

      Iokblaze if your rating is still low, you seriously have to do some thinking. You need to talk to people and take their advice. I went below 4.9 and was horrified, so I did some serious thinking, wrote down a strategy, tried it, modified it, and stuck to winning ways. I do have variations according to different types of passenger, but mostly it's the same strategy. The ones that worry me the most are those where the account holder isn't even in the car. My strategy has a way of handling that. So, do you have a written strategy? Do you have a way to learn from mistakes. I make so many mistakes, usually when I do not follow strategy, that I'm always telling myself off. Drivers should think about what is the first thing they say when a rider gets into the car, after the name check. Do you say "how's your day going?', or "Hey, how's it going". It's like "Hello, I am the most boring and predictable person you will meet today". Because that is exactly the message some drivers give when they use those typical opening lines. Do you have your own unique opening lines that work for you? How do those opening lines guarantee a response and a great conversation, even with the most anti-social riders. I'll give you an example of one of mine, it's not one of my most common chat up lines, but I used it three times yesterday. "Hi, I'm ever-so sorry I'm a stranger around here, so you're gonna be real lucky to get to your destination", they laugh and have to THINK about how to answer. One person said, "that's ok, I don't really want to go anyway", so I said "ok, I'll take you to the airport instead and you can fly to the Bahamas". The whole point of the chat-up line is to create a conversation, a very different conversation, and it goes from there. The chat-up line is only a minor part of the strategy. Try it, develop a strategy.

    The rating system is so flawed against the drivers...I had to give up driving nights.
    I learned picking up at nightclubs and drinking establishments is a recipe for disaster for your ratings.
    When people have been drinking and under the influence...No matter how nice ,friendly and helpful you are...They will thrash your driver rating.
    I have had drunk passengers laughing and holding up the phone and just about blackmailing me saying what am I going to do for them or they are going to give me a 1 rating...Outrageous having my driver rating in the hands of drunks.

    Uber ratings are based on the last 500 trips .My friends and I have discovered thru testing that Uber cooks the ratings. For example take a driver who has done 1404 trips. The next trip is a test in a remote area where this driver switches on the UberApp immediately before some friends have asked for an Uber in the same location. Uber tells driver to pick up one of driver's friends party to this test. After the journey the friend gives the Uber Driver friend a rating of 1 as part of the test.
    So for trip 1405 driver has rating of 1. Now 500 trips later trip if in trip 1905 if the same driver gets more than 1 his rating will increase. *As part of the test in trip 1905 the driver was given a 5 HIS RATING DID NOT CHANGE*

      +Friendlyboxer WOW! those are GREAT numbers... But Let's do the math. Your Overall is only based on your LAST 500 rated trips. And the system rating trigger when you are a pro like yourself is based on last 100 trips. BUT I ran your numbers and because of your current rating and trips, you would need to receive 71 - 4* to fall under 4.6. Or 18 - 1* to fall under 4.6. You are very safe. But let's say you do fall under 4.6, because of all your trips, You would be given a 50 trips trial to raise it. DISCLAIMER---This is only based on deactivation because of ratings, this doesn't count if you received a liable complaint. Thank you for watching.

    That's some great information man. I've had some issues in the beginning where I picked up the wrong passenger and I ended up in getting a low rating. This happened only once and it was my 10th trip, but I'm still struggling with it. I did everything to fix it, including reporting it to Uber and requested not to charge him. But I got a bad rating and neither Uber or the passenger wanted to change it. I've also asked Uber to tell me the tripID where I got a less than 5 star rating, just to do a self evaluation to figure out what went wrong but they were no help in that situation too. You thrive to do your best by following all the policies and guidelines and still you get a low rating even after you thought you did the best, is very discouraging. It looks to me like you're very experienced in this field. So I've got a quick question. Is it appropriate to remind your passenger to rate you at the end of the trip? I'm seriously been thinking about this because, in most situations, you do the BEST and they may not rate you. But if something goes wrong, in most cases unintentional, they will never forget to give a low rating! So is it okay to remind them to rate you for the trips you think that you did well?

    • @Ridesharingtech
      @Ridesharingtech  8 лет назад

      The 500 count is your RATED drives. (100 for Lyft). It depends how many rated drives you have under your belt. If you have very few drives, a slow rating will shift quickly. If you have ALLOT of drives then low ratings cause your numbers to drop slowly.. Same is rising.

I want to see if I was fairly rated. I have many unsolicited accolades. One said after 5 years I was best driver than Lyft or Uber. I have 2200 rides. Is there a lawyer I can talk to about small claims action?

    I was a 5 star driver for a month till I went on night runs. I picked someone up and they told me there was no way i was a 5 star driver. They said they were going to give me a 3 star rating because nobody is perfect. next day my rating dropped. So I think rating also depends on time of day you are working.

    How come as a drivers we don't' have a feedback option like the riders have on their app on the line where you can make comments about the driver on each trip which below the stars and says comments ??!!
    We are hoping to have also a rider feed back very soon on the our drivers app which more protect-able for us as a driver and to straight up those rude riders to behave being more respectful to us and it's more more helpful especially if the rider want to know the reason why his star rating getting lower or got banned they will know what did wrong to us as a driver by getting all those feedback to us which is fair enough .hoping will have this option very soon .

    Uber should stop play games with stars this is job non of the riders know what driver going tru all day no buddy should rate no buddy it is discrimination if the rider don’t like you face 1 star, not like your small 1 star, conversation 1 star take away this ability from them they pay only for ride from point A to point B that’s it not to eat or drink or scream or do what ever they want this is seek every body deserve to work rider have no right to destroy driver rating if uber want to know how good the driver how his car smell or how clean his car they should send uber team to check all this the riders have no rights is discrimination maybe some one will wake up one day and change this crap.

    Can u download this chart for us to use? I have at the most 10 4 stars and 5 3 stars out of 500 rated trips. 4.93 rating. That seems low for 15 non 5 stars out of 500 trips. 485 with 15 non 5's gets me 4.93? Also I think I have 6 to 7 4's and 1 or 2 3's. So probably I have even less than 15 total, more like 10 or so. Watching you click in a bunch of 4's, 20 or more only drops it to 4.95 or so. The most frustrating things though is that they give us no feedback. Can't fix or change things if we don't know whats wrong.

    Good video although my experience was different than many others.. I did not get any low ratings until I was over 200-300 trips..than I got a couple real doozies...I don't get many bad ratings but the ones I got were real bad ratings..got a couple of ones which made no sense!, than got a couple threes.. think that's my punishment for being a nice guy and trying to find people who enter a bad address or a bad pin drop..some even had moved to another location...so my worry is when I get past 500 say maybe 700 or 800 trips I might be in trouble...as this recent bad stretch will come into play down the road ..but you are so right even after all my good ratings in the beginning those few bad ones put a serious dent in my once stellar score

    I tell my riders to please rate me 5 stars as I will them. I explain to them why Im driving for extra money and sometimes put a small sign up explaining why 5 star ratings are important to keep on driving. It's up to the driver to educate the customers if you want to survive this game.

    • @Ridesharingtech
      @Ridesharingtech  9 лет назад

      +David Lanner Great idea but just remember to do it tastefully. Some passengers don't like feeling as you are begging for stuff.

    • @uncleharry5758
      @uncleharry5758 9 лет назад +2

      +David Lanner Well what's really unfair is that passenger's can't rate you 4.7 or 8, etc. So getting a 4 is failure. 1, 2, 3, and 4 fail, 5 passes. UBER should make it a point to educate them!! If we do it it looks like we are begging. But heck we are, the passenger's actually can control our livelihood, and for no good reason other than they do not like the way you wear your hair, fail you and give you a 4. So when you say, "suppose you slack up for awhile and get a bunch of 3's".that's not really true.....you can get those 3's, while NOT slacking up....so....the system is totally UNFAIR......you think they would never try this system with waitresses/waiters?.....their would be mass protests, so...I'm wondering if maybe that's why some drivers are protesting in San Fran, due to this rating system?

    • @uncleharry5758
      @uncleharry5758 9 лет назад +2

      +David Lanner Good points, I mean, UBER is basically forcing you to beg for your job!! What do you say on your small sign? Do you have it posted in your car?/or do you just give it to them to read? thanks in advance

    • @davidlanner6880
      @davidlanner6880 9 лет назад +1

      I explained on my sign that I drive in order to help pay medical expenses for my wife who is chronically ill. This worked out for me the first week or so then it backfired. I got numerous negative ratings and complaints by pax who accused me of begging. So much for that social experiment. It's mean out there. Now I have become more wise. If any pax says anything negative, is anti-social, slams my door, fails to say thank you, eats food without asking first, or does not use seat belt after being to do so, gets a 1-3 star rating. If they play mean, I play mean. I've been doling it out.

    I have done only 3 trips so far. My rating is 3.67. How bad did these people rate me? I am new to driving around the city is probably why. At least to all the side roads and residential areas. What ratings did I get for it to put me at 3.67? Was it 1 person or all 3 giving me a bad rating.

    • @Ridesharingtech
      @Ridesharingtech  9 лет назад +1

      +Pugger GREAT QUESTION.... Since you have done So few drivers, your average will shift quickly BUT it can be MANY ratings for that Answer. BUT ALL 3 did rate you. It's the ONLY poosible way to get a 3.67. The Issues is that Anything adding up to 11 will equal 3.67 when you have 3 drives. So it can be a 4,4,3 rating OR 5,4,2 or even 5,5,1. And so on. All these would average to 3.67. You are still a newbie, So I would not worry. Good luck.

    Won't even lie this made me super optimistic I didn't realize until now that as far as riders are concerned I've been a five star driver from day 1. I literally got 1 4 star rating out of 100 ratings so far. I have no idea what people are doing to anger riders, but its my opinion that no matter how fucked up some people can be the reality is people just don't know how to provide good service anymore.
    Its a job. Your happiness, pride, and ego doesn't matter. If the rider isn't damaging your vehicle you have no gripe and should put on whatever face they want.
    Are they paying enough money for that sort of service? No, but the point is your competing with other drivers willing to provide such service to distinguish themselves from you, and if you get lower ratings because of your failure to realize that, its not down to a flawed system, its a flawed rider.
    Reality check time. Riders see my ratings and know they'll get a better experience driving with me than they will with you. That's the point of such systems. Its not unfair, its the game. There are plenty of jobs that don't rely on such ratings. Try one of those on for size. Shrug.

      I live in south florida. Many drivers ubering for extra cash don't speak english. And I have heard of riders that punish drivers for it by leaving very low rating. Even hear stories where the passenger didn't like your car for being small or something that wasn't about service. It's few but people can be real jerks

    • @dragoonsunite
      @dragoonsunite 5 лет назад

      @@Ridesharingtech Oh yeah for sure that's where I've gotten a few of my 4 stars, I still manage to maintain a 5 star rating on the rider app, but definitely more 4 star ratings since I made this post, and even finally got a two star, have still managed to avoid getting a 1 star, but I'm sure it will happen eventually I'm only just now passing 750 rides and something like 300+ ratings.
      I tend to commute away from areas where I'm more likely to get riders who don't speak the same language as me. That's what they make me do, I listen to the ratings. If I get bad ratings just from speaking the wrong language I know not to service that area. If they have enough drivers who do speak their language to keep them happy, as customers they're doing the right thing by driving out people who don't speak their language.
      On the other hand if they don't have any drivers who speak their language, it's funny to me that they would give those bad ratings and consequently increase their prices in surge pricing and wait times because drivers avoid those spots. It does work here for sure around Seattle, there are areas in the Ghetto's of Tacoma, and in China town in Seattle where you can always get extra money if you're willing to risk lower ratings, because the surges are constantly hitting there, because drivers know it's not worth driving in the area.
      The riders are either punishing themselves for being so picky about chosen language, or they are choosing to pay a premium in cost and time in order to get only drivers who speak their language. Either way, I see the market as working, and I value my ratings so I avoid the areas.
      Now if it's so spread out in Florida and impossible to predict that you can't avoid it, I can see that being super annoying, and I'm genuinely sorry... I can't say it's any different, it's the same concept, except in that case the riders are essentially discouraging you from driving at all, which is kind of fucked up, but again also how a market works.
