Moses (Charlton Heston) is summoned up Mount Sinai and hears the voice of God through the burning bush, instructing him to return to Egypt and free the Hebrews.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on the Holy Scriptures, with additional dialogue by several other hands, The Ten Commandments was the last film directed by Cecil B. DeMille. The story relates the life of Moses, from the time he was discovered in the bullrushes as an infant by the pharoah's daughter, to his long, hard struggle to free the Hebrews from their slavery at the hands of the Egyptians. Moses (Charlton Heston) starts out "in solid" as Pharoah's adopted son (and a whiz at designing pyramids, dispensing such construction-site advice as "Blood makes poor mortar"), but when he discovers his true Hebrew heritage, he attempts to make life easier for his people. Banished by his jealous half-brother Rameses (Yul Brynner), Moses returns fully bearded to Pharoah's court, warning that he's had a message from God and that the Egyptians had better free the Hebrews post-haste if they know what's good for them. Only after the Deadly Plagues have decimated Egypt does Rameses give in. As the Hebrews reach the Red Sea, they discover that Rameses has gone back on his word and plans to have them all killed. But Moses rescues his people with a little Divine legerdemain by parting the Seas. Later, Moses is again confronted by God on Mt. Sinai, who delivers unto him the Ten Commandments. Meanwhile, the Hebrews, led by the duplicitous Dathan (Edward G. Robinson), are forgetting their religion and behaving like libertines. "Where's your Moses now?" brays Dathan in the manner of a Lower East Side gangster. He soon finds out. DeMille's The Ten Commandments may not be the most subtle and sophisticated entertainment ever concocted, but it tells its story with a clarity and vitality that few Biblical scholars have ever been able to duplicate. It is very likely the most eventful 219 minutes ever recorded to film--and who's to say that Nefertiri (Anne Baxter) didn't make speeches like, "Oh, Moses, Moses, you splendid, stubborn, adorable fool"?

"Who am I, that you should send me?" That's genuine humility right there.
No, God has made it clear in the scriptures that it is not humility. He made man in his image and likeness, so man should not stand before him in timidity that he is not worthy of God's righteousness. This is why Jesus came to show us our glorious image in the father.
Not humility. It's lack of trust in God's wisdom and lack of immediate obedience. As we read this part in the Scriptures, we'll find that Moses was reluctant to obey, to the point where _(even after witnessing miracles from God to perform in the sight of the children of Israel)_ he bluntly asks the LORD to send someone else instead and angered Him.
This tendency to abstain from immediate obedience accompanied Moses till the end of his life - he directly disobeyed God at Kadesh and paid for it dearly _(he was denied entry into Canaan and met his end in the wilderness)._
The man who voices God in this scene and any other scenes in this movie did a great job in conveying the power and majesty we associate with God.

According to google Charleston Heston was the voice of God in this scene. Donald Hayne was the voice of God in the rest of the movie

I, who am saved, want to go along with it. I want to hear God's physical audible voice from heaven as clearly as the servant Moses was able to hear and bow the knee before Him. Our Heavenly Father is a Mighty, Holy and Gracious God. Praise Jesus!

The script writer made this movie with such great quotes w/ emotion. How humble & shameful Prophet Moses is to God.... to meet the Lord himself..i don't think id be able to look at him given such humility & shame. But a true honour to meet the Creator.

The greatest irony about God's teachings in the Bible, is that they too aren't religious. It's a way of life that is meant to transform the person from the inside out.

The significance of the scene transcends the story. The meaning of the scene - what it is about - is that one must always be ready to answer the call of justice - to give up one's own life, one's own agenda, in the name of doing good. This holds true whether one believes in the Judeo-Christian God or not.
I don't think anything will ever beat seeing such a magnificent sight in real life. You gotta just imagine how advanced Egypt was in order to experience such a magnificent sight. Wait I'm thinking of the cloud, and pillar of fire.

We were in Elementary School when this movie was finally released to the Jewish Regal Theaters in Cincinnati Ohio early 2960s The movie is actually 7hours long. We had 3intermisdions . And some Families had to return on another day because of school . AMEN.

Agreed. One of the critiques I have of the original is that I find the characters very flat and one dimensional. DeMille's Moses seems to have one characteristic: stoic hero. Even in this scene, where is speaking to God, there's very little emotion from Heston. He's speaking to his Creator for the first time in his life and God's telling him he's going to have to challenge the leader of Egypt. Where's the fear? Where's the confusion? Heston kind of balks in his dialogue, but it's not reflected that well in voice or on his face (at least not to me.) It's like he's having a conversation about not wanting to go pick up milk. He does a little bit of the awe factor, but again, it's not what it should when you're talking to freaking God. In comparison to Prince of Egypt, where Moses' fear, confusion, and sense of awe is very clearly displayed, both in his voice and in his physical response. I love the scene where Moses becomes so scared of God's outburst, he cowers in the corner, and God goes to comfort him. That's just a beautiful moment, it's a human moment, it's like a moment between a parent and a child.
Usagi393 That, and God in The Ten Commandments sound, well, kinda goofy. The God in The Prince of Egypt had the ethereal quality you'd expect from an otherworldly being, had the sort of warmth and compassion you'd expect of an omnibenevolent being, and the fact that he and Moses shared the same voice actor puts a whole new quality to it: what could be more comforting and trustworthy than the sound of your own voice?
The music for that scene was just spot-on too.
***** The Prince of Egypt marked my childhood, and I think the music set the mood WAY better, especially God's ethereal theme.

Wiki told just yesterday that pharoahs chariots were actually the modern egyptian army on the set of Sinai.. Imwill continue seeking these omens since I first found this movies

I resent the post that God sounds like the boogy man'. He's my Uncle Delos Jewkes and his voice in person, was so beautiful, low and so kind, it was mesmerizing!
Considering when it was made, this film had amazing special effects; it was fun to watch as a child. But as an adult who has read Exodus, I'm disappointed with the excessive "artistic license" taken by the producers/writers - as if the real story is somehow "not good enough". Moshe was a real, fallible human. Cowardly,& w/ a stutter,his encounter with God at the bush is actually funny! And he did NOT fall in love w/ an Egyptian princess! He was an 80 yr old, reluctant leader of a rebellious mob!
Charlton said if this movie was made today, it would cost 223MILLION DOLLARS, REMEMBER IT IT ONLY BUT A MOVIE ONLY GOD CAN MAKE IT PERFECT!

Moses says who am I, Lord? That you should send me? A mythical story would not have begun in this way. There is human truth in Moses's doubt in confronting the mighty Pharoah of Egypt.

12 And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.

19 And I am sure that the king of Egypt will not let you go, no, not by a mighty hand.
20 And I will stretch out my hand, and smite Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midst thereof: and after that he will let you go.
21 And I will give this people favour in the sight of the Egyptians: and it shall come to pass, that, when ye go, ye shall not go empty.
22 But every woman shall borrow of her neighbour, and of her that sojourneth in her house, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment: and ye shall put them upon your sons, and upon your daughters; and ye shall spoil the Egyptians.
