I think this is great, playing like you and the way you explain your techniques are extremely helpful. I believe you complement your repairs along with playing.

And as you said about the kids is so true. They pick up ukulele and guitar really fast. You tube along with children learning programs. As long as you make it fun they are quick to learn😊.

Boy that pinky finger,is more important than guitar playing with the mandolin,I’ve just barely started using it for my guitar playing, but I love my little monteray mondolin, I finally got the action low enough by removing the thumb screws, going to have to get one of your bone saddles,if I ever get that much into it,way different then guitar, but your method makes it easier to understand, thanks Jerry.

The old Homer & Jethro musical comedy team had a joke where Jethro ask Homer why he was moving his hand up and down the guitar neck. Homer said, "I need to find the right place play the notes I want to play.". Jethro replies, "I found right where I need to play, and I ain't moving!".

Thanks Jerry for the great video and explanation of your method. I totally agree that keeping it fun and easy allows you to run with it. I think that while rules are meant to help us in music, they can also constrain us needlessly.
I appreciate your videos and was wondering if you have any tips for "shop cleanup day"? Your shop looks great always and was wondering if you have tips on keeping it neat and tidy?

Hey Jerry, yep this is so helpful to newish players. I learned all this stuff the hard way, being classical trained on pianoforte after transitioning to bass, there were so many things to learn about feel and following the theme, I got good and was subsequently asked to play in many professional shows, all sorts from country to rock and roll to bluegrass and psychobilly, (double, or stand up bass). Your method really works for more than just mandolin. :) So when are you going to take on another double bass repair Jerry ??

Hey Bassman, I've seen your channel and you are pretty cool on Stray Cats stuff on double bass and Some of your other live performances from way back. What ever happened to you fella?

@@gardeningfromscratch. Hi, I didn't realise that anyone had seen my channel lol, I got old and Covid which put paid to my days of playing due to neurological issues with my right hand which pretty much killed my playing, had recorded a few albums a couple years back one of which was with P.J. Proby. Had also play with Chas Hodges about 4 years ago who will be sadly missed. If you want more info PM me.

I'll be 70 in October, I've had a good innings with many pro bands under my belt. Also many recordings as session guy, I'm now doing PA and sound for a pro band, at least my ears are not totally shot (yet).

This is all well and good for those who can play a four finger g chord. I can't because I have a deformed pinky finger, it curves in towards my thumb and shortens my reach by a half inch. I just don't have the reach, everybody says just keep trying and you'll get it. My pinky takes my reach down by a half inch, there is really nothing I can do. I wish I could but physics just won't let me.

I have a friend who plays banjo with two fingers in his left hand due to arthritis. Barry Abernathy plays banjo with virtually no fingers in his left hand. You just have to figure out work arounds.

I understand what you’re saying. In some ways you remind me of what Sir Paul McCartney kinda says is this video. I learned to play lead guitar via a book (with Alvin Lee solos in it) that said it’s about playing in “boxes.” Your method makes perfect sense on the Mandolin (and Fiddle) because of the way it’s normally tuned (GDAE). This video is a good refresher course for me. Thanks! 😎🎻🎸🪕. ruclips.net/video/0-sXAqgP5KE/видео.html

It would be so much easier if only I had a pinkie finger on my noting hand. Having just three fingers makes playing my instruments so difficult after playing for years with all of my digits. I lost my pinkie last year due to diabetes complications.

@Phil Parrish I fell off a ladder last year and dislocated my ring finger on my fretting hand. The best advice that was given to me was to keep the mandolin out in the living room as a reminder to practice. I'm 65 so as others have mentioned, "not ever gonna play like Sam Bush". But this lesson is very inspiring. I can't play for very long at all. Probably 30 minutes 3 or 4 times a day would be my best. But I'll think about you when I practice now. Keep up your spirits and keep playing Phil.
