It's just crazy to me how much attention this video has gotten. To address all the comments, kind of at once: I appreciate everybody's concern for safety, but you need to calm down. It doesn't really send off sparks and it burns so fast that it's over before it has a chance to get out of control. We have done this every year for 7 years running and it has never spread. Burning the grass is good for it. It revitalizes the soil and makes it grow in stronger the next year. It grows right back on it's own every year, grows from the roots. We don't mow over it before it gets too big because it's supposed to get big. It's decorative.

Man, people today are pathetic judging by this comment section. They act like humans haven’t been using fire as a tool for thousands of years. I think a guy can burn three tufts of grass in his otherwise barren yard without ending the world guys.
I thought the same thing. Except it was almost winter and no wind. Not dry at all couldn't get the fire goiing for a long time. Something has changed. At first I tried to put it out I couldn't. Then I just tried to save my gear. I couldn't. Couldn't even stop it from burning the jacket off my back. Then I tried to save my life. Cut me off in a canyon and I had to double back through the fire. Took me a couple days, and two very cold night to get into town. I thought it was out. Then I saw on the news they were interviewing people asking if they thought it was a bad idea that the forrestry had decided to let it burn as it was know approaching town. It was October in Canada. Burned for almost two weeks. I was sick about it, luckily nothing was damaged. It was winter, I wasn't careless. Things have changed. Fires burn into cities and hundreds of homes are lost. It's crazy. I'm not telling anyone how to do anything or or giving any advice, all I'm telling you is what happened to me. I'm no fire expert but I have some experience and I don't know why but fire behavior is not the same. This is a world wide phonomenom.
Oh god it’s just terrible that people point out some of the dangers of this unsafe activity. How many times I’ve seen confident people think that they know what there doing then end up almost dead. I see no water source to put it out but you know what I do see a bunch of dead dry grass that already started to catch, grass fires are some of the most unpredictable and dangerous fire you can work on and good men and women die every year because people think they know what there doing but end up starting a forest fire. Don’t get me wrong I love blowing shit up and having fun but you should at least know what you’re doing before you start fucking around with fire.
All these years stupid me has been using a hedge trimmer and shears when I could have been lighting bushes on fire.. I'm getting up early tomorrow.. my wife is going to be so impressed
While this works for Pampas grass, a word of caution for other types of clumping ornamental grass. It's been my experience with Maiden Grass that burning kills the center portion of the clump. In the late fall or early winter, I use gas powered hedge trimmers to cut the grass close to the ground.
A good example of an activity that could've easily become one of those "it seemed like a good idea at the time" incidents. 😬 (Now, I'm going to replay the video again. Hahaha.)
Besides the high winds a fairly controlled area to teach the kids a little about fire. Remember "out" isn't out until it is cold and out not just burned to the ground and smoldering.
I like fire, thus I’m here to watch this, but yesterday, even I questioned a fire on my own personal creek island because it was dry and WINDY, yet, in your own yard and by your own admission, on a dry and windy day, you chose to risk it all… kudos! Great video. Glad the house and neighborhood survived.
I grew up on an orange ranch in California. We used to control weeds by burning the weeds under the trees. We always waited for a humid, cool, windless night and we would mow the weeds and wet down the ground where we wanted the fire to stop. All those elements from the burned weeds go back into the soil and feed the trees.
MooseT and there is my point. A garden hose would be ineffective with this particular type of fire. Whilst you may extinguish the flame source, it is the embers that are the most dangerous. A simple garden hose does not have the volume of water nor the correct spray patterns to control the embers. Of course you would know that given your expertise with a garden hose.
Further, give the fibre of the grass and as the owner said, it is a quick burn and embers in this case are light and do not hold heat for very long. As opposed to say a bush fire where multiple flame sources are usual and the burn material is heavier. But, you go with the garden hose champ.
@John Smith , did... you come down with a case of the stupids? it doesn't take but a bit of water to put out a landing ember... say if one landed on your house somewhere with a sprayer you could easily hit said area preventing the issue, or anywhere on the lawn, you know, if you're stupid enough to do this on bone dry grass on a windy day.... It may not put out a wildfire or a already out of control fire... but a garden house with a sprayer + full pressure from water being on will help put out what could cause your house to vanish into a large flame....Of course you would know that given your expertise with water and fire.
Most of these people complaining about fire spread must live in California...which you clearly don't. Not everywhere is capable of spontaneous full-community combustion. As for sparks, use your eyes. This stuff is so dry and burns so quickly that there are none. Thus no risk of spreading. Yay.
