Very sad. People will come and remove old barnwood for free. Burn the remaining wood after the good wood has been harvested. Those large timbers can be purchased at custom sawmills and they cost a lot of money. Many folks building their homes choose laminated beams when they learn how much single timbers cost.
I feel the same as most of the comments that was a sad thing to see the barn burn. A lot of things could have been done with wood and other things that are in old barns but you had your reasons for the burn. As an old firefighter I must say that was a darn good fire.
All old barns should be set on fire to make cool RUclips videos like this one! Sad that so many old barns are disassembled and the wood sold and recycled. What a waste. 😉
I join many of the other commenters about wasting valuable old wood that sells for a pretty high price. It could have been salvaged and the remaining wood burned.
Jim built a big ole barn in the 20's, took great care of it in western Illinois. Jim's grandson sold it to a company in New York for $54.000.00. All Jake had to do was knock it apart and load it on three flat bed trailers. ( Took him two weeks of vacation time)
that doesnt mean every barn ever built is worth money... not everyone has 2 weeks to knock down a barn and to load it all onto flat beds.... and why leave firefighters with just simulated fires to handle and not give them a chance at a real building fire..
I too am sad to see such large nostalgic structures left to fall into disrepair due to it becoming way more expensive than it is worth to restore. Not only that, anyone with out buildings, (including barns), have to pay taxes on the buildings every year. If a barn is not in use, it is not financially beneficial to keep. When you have a huge old barn, they are not built to heat like today's livestock buildings. Most often too big, too drafty, and too cold in winter for the animals comfort. Sigh.......still sad as H. History burnt or bulldozed, or both. Won't be long when the only place you can see old wood barns in Amish country.
We use to live on an old farm with a dilapidated 100 yr old barn, we'd remove wood from it and make antique furniture and sell it. A LOT of money could have been made off that old barn wood.
That’s pretty cool. Chances are though, that the owners were old and had no interest in money. Nor the energy to make something new out of the barn. And judging by the immediate area, it’s obvious nobody would’ve taken the rights to the barn, even if for free.

I hear so many folks verbalizing how this could have been saved or that could have been done. I see the fire department is in on this and I know for a fact that Fire departments use structures like this to give new firemen real training. Plus only the folks involved know how safe or not that structure was to try to attempt to save the lumber. I just am glad the barn burn was done by the firemen and that lots of good training probably was done that day.
I makes me feel sad that all my efforts to reduce my carbon footprint have just been totally wiped out by this blatant and stupid act of wastefulness, what the hell is wrong with these stupid people haven't they heard of "Recycle, reuse"
Sad especially because good old seasoned wood (of course only worm-free) is expensive these days. Many people (like me for example) renovate houses with it. Or building additions. I find it a waste if most of the wood was still good. But hey, just my opinion.
I'm going to be the bad guy now. All those bad emissions you're putting in the air You're suffocating me I can't breathe no more and I live 700 mi away
The entire area around the barn, and those firefighters have to stand right in front of the camera. smh. And one of them even looked at the camera a couple of times and STILL blocked the shot.
This isn’t a “shot” made specifically for you to use Woody. This is someone’s actual building that they owned being demolished. It’s not gonna be movie quality as it is literal raw footage. Your complaints aren’t valid here, as nobody is at “fault” for anything. It’s their video and their barn bro.
DOOFUSSES, Reclained wood like this is worth a lot. Amd likely more strurdy/long lasting for interior trim. All my long leaf pine casings and sills were harvested off an old roof in Austin, Texas. Folks who'd come by my guitar-making shop sometimes would ask where I got such nice wood.
They aren't playing tho...they literally are just putting it on the ground, no training being done....not a line stretched, hell other than warmth, there's no need for any PPE....that's like saying they aren't wearing SCBA..surely you don't wear SCBA to direct traffic so you? It's a non issue.
Why burn it? What a waste, you couldn't have made it a historical architecture? Seems we as the gutteral thinking simpleton minded reactionaries of the world, only think about destroying things because it feels fun, vs preserving something in the middle of a national homeless crisis that could have helped other people. What a waste of valuable lumber and history. To think men sweated and worked hard to build such a beautiful barn as part of your heritage only to be completely destroyed in 5 min. Mm makes me sick. We need more builders and carpenters in life and a few less destroyers. To think we as humans have the ability to make some of the worst destructive devices on the planet to kill our fellow human, and yet we can't even preserve something nice anymore. I'm glad I don't live in that state nor could you pay me to live there, it's like Beavis and Butthead must have owned the place screaming" fire fire yeah yeah"
I WOULD OF LOVED TO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO BUY IT! Just for the Beams ALONE!
I'm guessing lumber prices were a bit lower in 2014?
Don't you think they factored in the time it would take vs the money they'd make?

Dude, it’s there barn. They could throw it away or do whatever they want to do with it.
@@christopherhasratian1168 Of course.
Maybe they will now but not then
@@christopherhasratian1168 I agree, but it's their barn. . . . .
I've saved & rebuilt barns in a much worse state than this... what a shame
No shame at all everyone is permitted to do with their stuff as they please
shame for you, everything is better on fire.
you shold try it
It was a training exercise dummy, no one wanted this
How… how many barns do you own??
Then youd know how much time, effort and money it takes and that these people did that calculation.
I feel the same as most of the comments that was a sad thing to see the barn burn. A lot of things could have been done with wood and other things that are in old barns but you had your reasons for the burn. As an old firefighter I must say that was a darn good fire.
How do you know the wood was in good condition, or that it was even worth the effort?
It's like watching something die. What a waste of barn wood. Lot of projects could have been made with that barn wood.
the barn probably could have been decades old, and it's in a winter climate, so the wood might almost have been rotting
What a waste indeed, there are wood beams 8X8 20 feet long, the kind of wood you cannot buy anymore
@@Mira-cf9ek That barn was probably a 100 years old and that wood was good
So sad to see this old barn burn down there was a fortune in old barn wood.
Tens of thousands of dollars' worth of reclaimed lumber up in flames. Spectacular.
Hey Michael Stelzriede did you buy or sell barnwood?
Grandpa loved blue stained sugar pine. Said it was really hard to find!
My thoughts exactly. WTH??????

Exactly. I would of restored it & made it into a home
Both of you have absolutely no idea
Burning it is less wasteful than reusing or recycling the wood?
@@carlrs15 I was being sarcastic. But burning does look cool! 😎
@@doranosaurus1415 RUclips is sarcasm's kryptonite. Even if you use emogi's.
This showed how fast fire can move by 6 minutes the barn is fully involved. Never underestimate what fire can do.
Sad history is being burnt. Love old barns, some may not be safe so hence this video
I join many of the other commenters about wasting valuable old wood that sells for a pretty high price. It could have been salvaged and the remaining wood burned.
I would have bought a lot of the lumber as it can be reused. This is tragic.
All the nice beams and structure lumber. What a waste.
Too bad they didn't salvage the hinges and other iron work. The beams alone would be valuable.
Old Lumber like that goes for $33 a board I would have paid to tear it down for him

Another part of history gone up in smoke
Agricultural archeology needlessly destroyed. Terrible. Historic preservation must not be a part this town's culture.
its not the acropolis dude chill
It was still such an awesome building tho
Just worry for yourself keep it for you self

I bet that radiant heat felt nice on a cold winters day
Those fire fighters could have put this out before it got out of hand.

What was wrong with the house
That can’t have refurb on it
Here in the uk that's called arson and you will be placed in jail.

In almost every case you need a permit from the state fire Marshall to do this. Pay a fee and it’s legal

that damn barn went up fast let alone come down fast
They have surely killed a lot of animals who sheltered there for winter and found death.

Great video. Not everything in our world needs to be saved. Get real people.
So that's what those old time sports broadcasters were talking about........
Those firefighters have the cleanest turnout gear I've ever seen. You can tell that gear has never seen the inside of an active structure fire.
Or.. hear me out... they get it cleaned to prevent CANCER
What a shame that wood could have been recycled sniff sniff also smell the pollution so wrong in so many ways!
