  • Ta Prohm is Cambodia’s tomb raider temple. Ta Prohm Temple in Cambodia. Tomb Raider temple in Cambodia. Cambodia's tomb raider temple, Sime Reap 2022
This is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Siem Reap, Cambodia because of its fascinating gigantic trees that have grown out of its temples. This site gained greater prominence after it was used as a location in the Hollywood movie Tomb Raider. Its scenery of abandoned ancient temples that are entangled by colossal tree roots is quite enchanting. Welcome to Ta Prohm, Siem Reap, Cambodia.
History has denoted that the Ta Prohm was built during the 12th century by the famous king, ‘Jayavarman VII.’ It is believed that as king, Jayavarman dedicated the ‘Ta Prohm,’ as a Buddhist Temple, while all other temples in the Angkor region have been devoted to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. This was done by King Jeyavarman as a gesture to the King’s mother, who was a staunch Buddhist herself.
The large roots of the tree that crawled at the center of the temple seems like something you’ll see in fantasy movies. It’s amazing how the roof was able to hold its weight. My initial impression is that it was a tree that grew beside the temple. Observing it further gave me the idea that perhaps a small bird left a seed on top of its soiled roof. The seed eventually grew, that's why its roots scattered on the roof until they reached the ground.
Even though the temple was destroyed very much by Siamese before, Ta Prohm was left much when it was found. The layout of the site is relatively simple - a typical Khmer temple, consisting of a number of one-story buildings. Having been swallowed by the jungle many centuries ago, the interior temple has continued to be inhabited by big trees. The interior temple used to be the house of many people of royal families.
Not surprisingly, when you don’t follow the route, Ta Prohm is a bit maze-like and it might become difficult to remember where you’ve been. At some point, you’ll find yourself in the courtyards surrounded by free-standing gopuras and, yes, awesome trees.
It took some time before we got our chance to get a picture of the most popular section of the temple because of the number of tourists lined up. The tree at Ta Prohm has striking white roots that are much thinner and finer than the other trees around. It does look very much like a spider’s web being spun over the temple door to cover it up.
The tree does bring in a lot of tourists to the site, but a happy side effect is that it makes restoration works here a top priority. The carvings and towers look like they are in steadfast condition. This is also one of the more lush temples in Angkor Park, with vegetation growing every way they please. It does give the feeling like you are deep in the jungle though you are only a twenty-five minute ride away from Siem Reap. Even if it didn’t have “the famous tree,” Ta Prohm should be on your priority list for visiting.

Thank you my friend. I knew you would love this video. It’s one of my favorite temples in Cambodia. By seeing all these temples occupied by gigantic trees, one should think that the nature is the ultimate one. But I still wonder how come all these temples withstand the weight of these trees even after 800 years.. it’s marvelous. It’s like walking into the history and fantasy land. You should visit this temple when you get a chance. Have a great weekend my friend!

Indiana Jones- great movie! The big tree and tree roots are memorable and amazing! It is hard to believe that the trees haven’t affected more of the temple… and it’s really nice to see how the temple has survived even though the jungle was trying to take over. Great that they are working to preserve this special temple!! Great video- enjoying the series!! :) J L

It’s very clear that Nature always take over the man made things at the end. Glad they re-discover this temple some 200 years ago and now it’s a world tourist spot especially after the movie Tomb Raider which was shot here. Thanks for watching. 😊👍

Amazing place to explore and can’t believe it still stands even after 800 years though the jungle overtook the temple centuries ago. Glad they preserved it well for the people to see! Hi and thanks Travel with Syri for sharing.
Wow, cool Tomb Rider!!! was filmed.
OMG, the Giant tree....looks as if an alien tried to invade this temple...1:26...indeed, how does its roof stay intact...maybe that temple is holding onto this tree???
Each building is intricated and elegant.
The history in the description is very much appreciated.
    Well done. 🙋‍♀🙋‍♀🛶🛶

Thank you my friend. Yes, it’s amazing and mind boggling to see those temple walls covered by giant trees. Perhaps 🤔 a small bird left a seed on top of its roof. The seed eventually grew and that’s why its roots scattered on the roof until they reached the ground. It’s one of the important places to see in Siem reap after Angkor wat. Have a great day my friend.
