As a young boy about nine years old then, I was there with my family in mid 1969 before the war started. As I remember like yesterday, I did not encounter any tourist. Our family had to stay at the buddhist temple around the area. There were no hotels or guesthouses around. Now, most of my family members did not survive the Pol Pot. Only my sister still lives in Phnom Penh. I had to leave the country by boat in late 1979 from Sihanoukville and came to the US in early1981. Angkor Wat was so peaceful and wild then. Thanks for sharing!

I was at Angkor Wat for sunrise in July 2016. Maybe a few hundred people were there, definitely not thousands. I spent three days touring the huge Angkor complex. I thought it was a unique and enjoyable experience and I'm glad I did it.
July 2016 was the low season and there are not many tourists. But he took this video in high season so many people at sunrise. Exactly thousands tourists.....

@@nitinakash1 Very true. People don't understand. They think that these are all mystical stories, made up and think it's just 'neat'. They don't realize the ultimate science behind these ancient, early spirituality of those temples, including the pyramids. They think it's just silly, but it's old science!

You saw everything in the exact same order that the large tour groups move through the sites. If you had done it in reverse order ( as we did ) you would be standing in most of the temples practically alone..and having an amazing time.
Really nice filming and music usage on the sunrise portion! It’s so charming and inspiring to watch these early episodes. You guys have become more sophisticated storytellers, hosts, and travelers over the years. Your channel is making the pandemic (and the election) bearable!
I just want to say that after the sunrise non-event (which I was also underwhelmed by a few times) the way you edited the Angkor Wat temple complex was really excellent and must have taken a long time. But you captured the essence of the place in a way I haven't seen in any other video. Really great. Thanks. I have been there more than 10 times, and every time i feel there is something missing there, as if the soul of the place has gone, which is why I would say the Bayon is the best place for sunrise because you are alone as it has an incredible atmosphere with all those stone faces, which is somewhat lost when surrounded by 100 jabbering tourists who flood there later. If you ever go back I would say go to Banteay Srei temple...its 30 minutes further and is older than Angkor Wat and its like a mini version with far fewer people, and the stones are a beautiful rusty brown.
bobby george completely agreed and that's what I should've done. We got to Bayon after 7am though and there were very not many people. Still a great experience. Banteay Srei is awesome too

Great video, thanks for making it possible for us to revisit our trip there in 2012...if we are lucky enough to go back will definitely explore some of the more remote temples of the complex. We didn’t want to be wrecked all day and tired, so we skipped it. We knew it was a good choice for us, but this validated it. I had the opportunity to visit in 2017. I did not go to the sunrise thing but the visit was worth every penny. I would encourage anyone to go and visit the temples.
Omg , my husband and I got separated in a huge garden , bad thing was I left my phone in the car it was like 1 hr before we found each other. Lmao I was thinking you were looking for food....... I was hoping you were 💜💜💜 love it.
I think you guys make a very good team with the videoing and editing. I wish I would have found your channel a long time ago. You said a a year and be back for Christmas. I decided to start from the 1st video.... Taking a break from regular TV PROGRAMMING.
I’m here in Siem Reap now, scrolling thru videos before I set my alarm.. lol and I checked your video. A little discouraging, yes, great editing, seem like more of a “stay at home and watch Netflix” couple, and wondering when you’ll do a video on some place like the Grand Canyon?
You guys did a great job on this video of your tour. I was there in May of 2016, just 3 months after this vid was published and had a fabulous time. Fortunately, I didn't eat any ants! At least you weren't there in the heat of the day around noon like I was. Still, it was unforgettable. Thanks for sharing!
I also went to Angkor Wat at sunrise and I thought it was pretty cool, yes there were a few hundred people but with aid of a local guide we were actually the first ones there and set up in a great spot. Using bulb mode on your camera it is possible to get some primo images before actual sunrise. Although all credit for taking the effort to make a video you sounded a bit like jaded tourists who would be better off at home. I thought the Angkor complex was pretty amazing especially through the eyes of a seasoned photogrpher. But i did have the advantage of hiring a local Cambodian photographer guide who knew where to go and how to avoid the crowds, and we would often be surrounded by people but actually in spot where there was no one. My recommendation is to open your eyes, be aware and dont look for the negatives, look for the wonder and beauty that you certainly ant gonna see back home. Angkor isretty goddam awesome
Zardos Spinosa did U hire a guide from hotel or at the temple complex? Looks like a great idea to get the best view and experience among the expected crowd ..
@@sathyak1920 it's actually a bit hard to get a good guide at angkor. Look into getting one in advance online. If you feel it's out of your budget, try to find a book called Ancient Angkor. It retails for ~30 CAD and in the complex you can find it for under 10 bucks if you haggle.
You guys got some great artistic shots this video! Loved it. Do you use a GoPro to film? If so, which model do you have? I am trying to decide and know nothing about them.
Thanks Ashleigh! Nate is the creative one in the relationship ;) We only use go pro when it's going to be wet! So whale sharks and the Philippines were a lot of go pro footage. We have the go pro session. It's much better audio wise because it doesn't need a waterproof case (unless you are more than 30 feet underwater). For everything else we use the canon g7x - it's the best! And canon 6d for fancy stuff :) but it's heavy so I don't carry it as much as I'd like to!
+Kara and Nate Thanks so much! I am going to look into the g7x. I have a Canon Powershot thats okay for beginners but I want a camera that can keep up for when I head to Europe this year! And I definitely don't want a heavier one to carry around.
Interesting about the crowds.....We were there in Siem Reap this past Christmas (2019), which is peak season, whereas you folks appear to have been there in the month of February. There are lots of people in much of your video. We encountered not so many, even in peak season, because we got up at 6am each day and got to the temples at 7.30am each day. The trade off for those early rises was cooler temperatures and fewer people. We did not do a whole day or even half day of touring, we did just one site each morning. Then we relaxed in the hotel pool in the afternoons! It was a great relaxing way to do it. We also went to sunrise at Angkor Wat. There were lots of people, yes, but we got there early (5am) and got a good spot at the lily pond. Awesome sunrise, never forget it. I HIGHLY recommend people go early in the morning, as I think you mentioned. We were back into town by 10am each day......
Loved this, great shots and editing. Got a trip planned to Angkor in Jan 2017. I should have guessed it would be like Venice, Rome, Ephesus, the Pyramids etc... lots and lots and lots of people. Thank thank goodness for RUclips and guys like you for giving me an idea of what to expect and how best to deal with it. BTW - don't obsess about eating ants. A worse nightmare would be them eating you!
;) It is usually a little crowded during Jan- Feb because of the good weather (Not burning hot) andddd the New year plus Chinese new year :) btw, i really enjoy your video :)
I’ve been a few times and never had 2000 people waiting or any lines. Both times were high season in January/February once sunrise and once around 10am. It’s very beautiful if you appreciate the history of it.
Enjoy your vids. Been watching for a while. Particularly impressed by your editing skills. Did you take a class on editing or just come by it naturally?
Great quality video! Did you have to get a visa before you arrived there? I am going there at the end of September from usa and I wonder if I need. Visa before I depart or if I can get a visa at the airport. Any ideas?
Whatever it is, as a Cambodian I apologize for that uncomfortable situation. Anyway thanks for visiting Cambodia and hopefully you will visit again soon.
haha I was there in 1994. Sunsets were the go, some foreigners had troubles, bad ones. Khmer people are really sweet, outside of a commercial transaction of any sort.
I went this morning and yes crowded. But all truely great spots are. Still worth it. Our hotel organised transportation there to see sunrise and then back for breakfast and a return to the temples for an amazing day exploring. With a stop for lunch. Do it!
Thats a lot of people!! I remember getting lost inside ta phrom. I was there early in the morning so very few people and i felt like am all by myself!! You guys are so cute. May i know what software you are using for video editing?? :)
I would recommend tourists to visit Beng mealea temple and Koh Ker temple too. It's quite far from Angkor Wat, well you wont regret to go that far to see the sight. Just wowww...heaven
My cousin went to Kampuchea Krom before & saw ants crawling on a Vietnamese sandwich so he didn't eat it. A local person ate it, and they just brush it off. The temples are so wonderfully intricately detailed, it's sad to see the demise.
John it is a little bit hot during July. However, it would be great if you go to Angkor Wat in the morning before 9am. I would say watching the sun set is also a good idea. The three stars hotel costs around $15 to $40, and the room is comparable with 3-4 stars hotel in Vegas. Foods in front of the temples might be very favorable for locals. So if you want western foods, ask Tuk Tuk or ppl there for popular restaurants. Dt forget to go to Pubstreet for cheap massage like a dollar or two😸
I'm from Cambodia and you should visit again and see the new modernized cities bc it's truly amazing and beautiful;) Cambodia is a place you visit before you die yk ☺️😊
We were just there last tuesday and i am amazed that you both still looked fresh after your tour. We started the tour at 530 am also, hoping to see sunrise at Angkor Wat but nada. :( By the time we reached Ta Prohm, we were already soaked in sweat and sunburned.. :( and yes the crowd does take away the experience. :( but it was all worth it.. :)

To all the people complaining about the sunrise... kara and nate are not entirely wrong. I had the privilege of going to Cambodia twice and saw this sunset both times and both times it was extremely cloudy. All my classmates and teachers were wondering if the sun had even come up and we were disappointed because we had heard it was very pretty. Of course, the temple itself is still historically amazing! And i do think they shouldn't have titled their video in that way
I was there in October this year, hardly any people, not too hot, not too much rain, and frankly the rain was nice to break the heat. Spent three full days at temples which was fantastic. no ants in my rice.......
When I was there in 2005 there were hardly anyone there for sunrise, we did encounter more on table Hill (think that's what it's called) for sunset. Tomb Raider temple is called Ta Prhom, here I was patient and sat on a wall waiting until there was no one around so I could get clear empty photos. It didn't take that long, about a 30 minute wait.

You guys have the best video of Angkor wat then others you tubers. 👍
Your photography and editing are fantastic!
It retails for ~30 CAD and in the complex you can find it for under 10 bucks if you haggle.
im curious what camera you are using for video recording. by the way nice video. ill visit siem reap next month :)
Thank Q for Visit our country 😊
;) It is usually a little crowded during Jan- Feb because of the good weather (Not burning hot) andddd the New year plus Chinese new year :) btw, i really enjoy your video :)
I’ve been a few times and never had 2000 people waiting or any lines. Both times were high season in January/February once sunrise and once around 10am. It’s very beautiful if you appreciate the history of it.
Enjoy your vids. Been watching for a while. Particularly impressed by your editing skills. Did you take a class on editing or just come by it naturally?
i went in angkor wat last april and the sunrise was great! you just have to look beyond the tourist and pretend you're alone 😆
Great quality video! Did you have to get a visa before you arrived there? I am going there at the end of September from usa and I wonder if I need. Visa before I depart or if I can get a visa at the airport. Any ideas?
Visa is available on arrival for $30US and a passport sized photo. look it up online.
Thx u for coming to my country.i been watching all ur video ,i love them
Very good I support and like your Videos
Love ❤️ it thank you guys for posting this video. God bless
Hope you will visit again because Cambodia has built clean roads and many places for tourists like you
Wow this was SOOOO different from our experience, totally agree with the title though! Ta Prohm at sunrise perhaps?
I am glad you love Angkor Wat!. Please visit us again.
Whatever it is, as a Cambodian I apologize for that uncomfortable situation. Anyway thanks for visiting Cambodia and hopefully you will visit again soon.
yes, you sum it all-the experience of seeing sunrise at angkor wat.fun, lots of fun.
A lot of temples in Siem Reap province, amazing 🙏🏻
haha I was there in 1994. Sunsets were the go, some foreigners had troubles, bad ones. Khmer people are really sweet, outside of a commercial transaction of any sort.
I love that, Nature taking over no matter what.
Great video!!!
Thanks for such great trample video ...
Both looking cool
I went this morning and yes crowded. But all truely great spots are. Still worth it. Our hotel organised transportation there to see sunrise and then back for breakfast and a return to the temples for an amazing day exploring. With a stop for lunch. Do it!
Hahahaha the crowd... Nate is too funny... Great job guys for sharing this amazing experience...
I'm so glad you shared, I was planning on waking up around 4am.
"He had already eaten his ants". :)
Love you ❤️💛💚 from Cambodia 🇰🇭🇰🇭
Good job guys!!!!
wow get up early to see sun, it's wonderful
I'm planning my trip - where did you stay and how was it?
Welcome to Cambodia 🇰🇭!!!
My cousin went to Kampuchea Krom before & saw ants crawling on a Vietnamese sandwich so he didn't eat it. A local person ate it, and they just brush it off. The temples are so wonderfully intricately detailed, it's sad to see the demise.
Enjoying the excitement and energy of all the people :)
hi there! What month did you go? I'm assuming first quarter of 2016? How was the weather? I plan to go in July (might be hot!). Nice video, thanks!
Dt forget to go to Pubstreet for cheap massage like a dollar or two😸
U2 are awesome! I love video of visiting Angkor Wat
I went 10yrs ago for the third time and there was no one there it was empty I don’t think I’ll go again. Great video
I'm from Cambodia and you should visit again and see the new modernized cities bc it's truly amazing and beautiful;) Cambodia is a place you visit before you die yk ☺️😊
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
+The Spontaneous Traveller thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
I went to the 5 main temples, I liked Bayon temple the most because of the massive smiling faces everywhere.
Just back from Siem reap, also saw the angkor wat sunrise, its like a dream~ it's really beautiful.....to me.....even though there are very crowded
